Traditionally, in the 18th century the great plaid had a section of plaid left over, after hand pleating it, which was part of the plaid and hung down the back that was twisted and brought up over the back. Including over the back of the shoulder and pinned to the center of the front of the shoulder with a tartan pin. The great plaid was all one section of tartan, not two sections as seen in the video. I believe the great plaid is still worn the same way, today as it has been for hundreds of years. In my opinion, the kilt in the video looks more like a movie version , of someone trying to put together a philibeg and tartan scarf and give the impression of what a traditional great plaid should look like.

A fly plaid finished a full formal kilt. Remember that in Scotland it is the male that is the peacock and not the female.

I like a fly plaid rather than a plaid sash. A sash always reminds me of the Boy Scouts or something.
