[RARE RECORDING] Maria Callas "Sola perduta abbandonata" (Carnegie Hall, 5/3/1974)

The Great Maria Callas Live in Carnegie Hall at her 1st Concert on 5 March 1974! It comes from a very rare out of print LP!! I have the complete concert in very bad sound...but this is in Great InHouse sound for 1974!! Callas in not in good voice! She was recovering from a cold! What many of those in the audience did not realize was how close the concert had come once again to being canceled, this time because of the death of Sol Horok, the impresario who sponsored the evening, and because of the emotional toll his death was taking on Miss Callas, an old friend.
Mr. Hurok had died in the afternoon, and, at first, the news was kept from Miss Callas. As she appeared before the audience she apologized for her “emotion and fatigue.”
She gave a fully Dramatic Performance of the aria!!

I adore Callas. However, she sounds quite desperate here and this recording only tarnishes her glorious reputation. She should have cancelled.
Her master classes at Juilliard show her in a much better light demonstrating her complete knowledge of the great singing tradition. Many wonderful moments there with a ‘safety net’ of choosing which notes she’d sing out and those that she sketched out/illustrate. So many memorable moments. I attended several times.

So much passion, so much energy ...after all this time! Just few notes not fully in her control does not mean she should have canceled. The woman is a legend. Every appearance of her should be revered. Her concentration and determination are remarkable.

Nadie ha cantado con ese dramatismo , locura , desesperación y pasión esta aria . Qué más da qué algunas notas no esten bien . Ella seguía siendo Callas electrizante y genial .
