  • The Great Maria Callas rehearsing in Paris for her Album with Verdi Arias from his less Known Operas...She is in very good voice for the period!! Much more relaxed and fresh than 1961-1965!! She had re studied with Elvira De Hidalgo!! She tries in 2 different takes the high notes in pianissimo and then in fuller Voice!! Nicola Rescigno is the conductor!! Hope to enjoy!!

    I wonder if there is a singer today that can sing just half beautifully and technically as la Callas did here. Wonderful in every way and straight to the heart, as always.

    marvelous selection. Never heard this recording before or knew of these 1969 recordings. Callas sounds fresh, and the voice more even than before. She is perfectly in control and beautifully singing with all her artistry.

    I’ve actually always enjoyed the Verdi Arias recordings, though it’s not prime Callas. And how light and lyrical she sounds in this rehearsal! Even here, her artistry is so strong and she knows how to wisely and masterfully use her instrument.

    Nicola rehearsed with her at the '57 Dallas rehearsals and concert as well and you can sense the magic they both contained. Simply awe inspiring.
    I've heard this countless of times when it was on RUclips many years ago and it still resounds today as it did then.
    One can get the sense that she was working on her voice again with how fresher the timbre of voice was as opposed to the early '60s yet we can still hear the dreaded wobble on notes above F#5 hence her reticence on sustaining them for more than a half note. Still, the middle and lower registers are intact and fuller than they've been since the '49 Norma recording; there's no issue of transition either which was a crowning jewel for Callas in her vocal prime neither is there a hint of wobble in her coloratura. The Bb when supported didn't sound bad but I supposed the progression of her degenerative disease really took its toll on her as she aged and stopped rigorously singing.

    • @kurtgarmaker3719
      @kurtgarmaker3719 Год назад +1

      The only degenerative disease she suffered from was anorexia

    • @kurtgarmaker3719
      @kurtgarmaker3719 10 месяцев назад +2

      Actually this proves it was not degenerative disease but voice lessons and practice that restored her bloom. The b flat , whether forte or piano is steady.. no wobble anywhere . She should have kept it up.

      @@kurtgarmaker3719One of my teachers many years ago said that Callas’ original teacher came to her in the early 50s after the weight loss and said she needed some vocal work, but that Maria said no. By the time she realized her teacher was right and went back to her, it was too late. It’s just what I was told-not sure of the validity.

      My guess is a very real fear of failure and the toll that her degenerative disease took on her - by the end of her farewell tour she started to sound much better than during the London performance where all you can see is the fear behind her eyes that the notes simply wouldn't come out.

    • @familypondman

      @@martynasmatutis8284 She made mistakes and the voice was broken, didn't know how to sing the low notes anymore, nothing to do with illnis I think!

      @@familypondman Unfortunately it has to do with her illness! By the end of 1974 and then in 1976 Ah Perfido recording she sang in much better voice! It was the medicine and the cortisone that helped her breathing system…but unfortunately that caused the heart failure…😢

    Fun fact from what I've heard: Callas had her cords checked out and found out there wasn't anything wrong with them. It was underlying health and emotional/psychological problems that contributed to her decline.
