    NY Times - His middle voice, elegant and ringing as on the recordings, rises into an upper register of an entirely different quality, and that’s when it gets exciting. He’s a lyric tenor who roars on top with genuinely thrilling, auditorium-filling sound. You can’t duplicate that sensation at home.
    Bachtrack - But the finest singing of the evening came from Benjamin Bernheim, making his long-overdue Met debut. Even if the Duke is a thankless role dramatically, it's the perfect showcase for his elegant tenor. He captures the insouciant elegance of the opening scene, with neatly executed turns in “Questa o quella”, as well as he does the bravado swagger of the final act. His voice works beautifully in the acoustic of the Met, filling the auditorium with rich, golden tone, which he is able to bring down to a mere thread of sound.

    He can sing. But the Duke’s character needs charisma too. This is not to diminish the performance but to acknowledge that in order to build a believable character it goes far beyond one’s capacity to sing well-presence and soul.

      Bernheim is really fantastic, and he sounds way better in the theater (I’ve attended three of his performances) than on any YT videos. But I don’t hear any baritone at all in his voice. Kaufmann sounds like a baritone with a good upper register, but Bernheim?

  • @johnl405

    His vocal production is very easy to listen to. It's very seamless from note to note, but the diction is there and doesn't get mushy. Very easy sound with no strain, except for maybe a tiny bit of effort in the upper register. I didn't know anything about him till these performances.

      He's a pretty well-known French tenor, but he's better known in Europe than over here. Bernheim was supposed to debut at the Met back in 2020 as Romeo but Covid screwed that up. His performance of the Duke of Mantua this month is his Met debut.

    • @bharp4390

      I think his voice is rather nasal and lacks color. It's just a relatively empty sound, which is a big reason why there is a lack of "fire."

    • @xdranzer0004
      @xdranzer0004 Год назад +3

      I find his singing to be quite nasal. There is a lack of nasal RESONANCE. All I hear is mostly a sound put forward, not too pushy, but it lacks openness in all other dimensions. Not a terrible singer, but not the best either.

    • @operafairy
      @operafairy Год назад +3

      @@xdranzer0004 exactly, plus his voice is putted deeply in his throat and that's why all his attempts to go to high register is very constricted and woofy, it's neither free nor natural. He cracks often even on A or B-flats and he totally avoids any higher note, he just afraid to perform it. During this run he hasn't performed nothing higher B, which was so problematic, it's unacceptable for a lyrical tenor making his Met debut. As a light tenor he has to have high C at least, but he usually cracks trying to perform it, so he just hasn't high notes. It is a sign of bad technic and wrong emission. Even few years ago his sound was better. It means a lot. He is so mediocre singer that I couldn't even believe at first that he is going to sing at the Met. What a sad times.

      I strongly disagree. His voice production is quite faulty, his timbre unpleasant and his style far from Verdi. He sounds and acts as if Rigoletto were Les Misserable. Musical theater in an opera house. Greetings.

    I went on Dec 8th and the voice cracked a little on the final B, perhaps he was tired, having sung a few of those. He has a much better technique than di Stefano but he needs to grow di Stefano’s coglioni, be La Donna or the quartet ir even the aria, a little more testosterone is called for, more macho!!!

    • @mistertoad5629
      @mistertoad5629 Год назад

      I was there too. Yes, the final B was not perfect. I liked him with Oropesa very much! He is a very elegant and cool Duca. His Duca seems like Don Ottavio turned into Don Giovanni. I get what you meant by more testosterone. If I want that kind of sound, I can always listen to the one and only super Mario 😜

He has the 100 years of history of audio recordings made by the best tenors ever as a best possible performing model but nevertheless he sings in such miserable way. It's useless to show him something or give a singing lesson, he has such poor voice and vulgar emission and nothing more. It can't be changed as you can't change one's head or body. No joy of life in his character...one applauds and sings this in the street because some part of you feels the Duke correct..even though he is a terrible person..like Don Giovanni..you have to give him life and charm and humanity because that dark spot in all of us can relate to him..like Cesare Siepi vs the modern Don Juans who are just pathetic and have no joy...even when you die as Hamlet die with joy!! Doesn't help he looks like he's out of a 2000s action movie...anyway...
