I have been experimenting with the old “emergency” radios, using an adapter to hook up a generic 36 inch CB mag mount antenna. My conclusions:
    - it does increase range over the stock “emergency” antenna with the kit, but not as much as I had expected. The stock antennas actually seem to work quite well! I compared using the emergency CB with its stock antenna with President Randy hooked up to the 36 in mag mount, and the “emergency” CB actually did quite a bit better, with a stronger signal and a bit more range. Both radios had a range of over 3 miles. That was in an area with a lot of trees and power wires. I would expect a bit more on highways.

That antenna looks a lot like a dual band amateur VHF/UHF antenna.
I'm going to have to keep an eye out for a new AM/FM radio to do a road test.
Now that we're in the summer doldrums, with almost no DX, I took a drive today and threw in a mobile AM CB.
Nothing has changed. You have to constantly adjust the squelch to compensate for power line noise. I want to see if you have to do that with an FM radio.

When do you use AM or FM? If I'm on a logging road, lots of trees & mountains, which would be best for me to use?
Appreciate any help. I picked this radio up.. will use it to monitor logging truck travel on off-road travel.

AM is still the preferred mode of operation for truckers and most CBers in general.. FM not really popular in USA.

I use FM when I am traveling with other vehicles. We switch to a quiet channel and enjoy the relative quiet the FM mode provides. But otherwise you will probably not hear anyone using the FM mode.

I have been using the Retevis for a few weeks now and so far so good. It is a nice entry level radio. IDK about the Cobra one hander, I have not used one, however on a personal note, I'm not a fan of this type of radio.

Beware Retevis warranty sucks! I bought a GMRS RS87, 40watt, tested it was only putting out 20-25 watts at the most. I contacted them for an exchange or repair, they just kept on making excuses. They told me another customer cranked his power supply to a higher voltage to get full 40watts...so that was their recommendation to increase the voltage pass the publish voltage.

    • @390WagonMaster
      @390WagonMaster  3 месяца назад

Yes this happens. Cobra did this to me back years ago, they said I must not be checking the power level correctly. Think about this for a second... They probably get calls from lots of folks that really don't know what they are doing.
Now that being said, if you have been paying attention, a very large amount of Chinese GMRS/VHF/UHF hand helds do not put out what they are rated. Baofeng and this like.
Call President,Cobra,Midland and see if you get any further.

@@390WagonMaster I sent them a video of SWR meter and voltage reading from the power supply, even cranked it up with voltage to 15.2v, and was getting same results.

EDIT... They are very well regulated so upping or lowering the Volts should be no effect.

@@390WagonMaster unfortunately I bought it directly from Retevis. They want "me" to do more test applying more voltage, after I asked for an exchange. Appears they're trying not honoring the warranty which says, 30 days for and exchange or repair, 24 months for repair. They keep asking for videos of how I'm testing. I just gave up, won't buy another Retevis product. They sent me a video of how they perform their test, took the guy 3 seconds to connect power then key up and disconnect then places it in a box with others, no recording of what the test results were...not compliant with ISO2000 standards.

Its not a race, I take pride in actually using these radios a lot before posting any content about them And yes I try to destroy them while testing. I TOT them for an hour or more into a 1.5.1 SWR. After reviewing I still use the radio, if something pops up I will report. Cheers
