  • In this video we compare my new RED Helium 8K to our old Scarlet 5K. We take a look at the two side by side and see if resolution really makes that big of a difference.

The problem with the 8k (or more) is that when you downscale to 4k, you get a way too sharp image. It feel so videoish, not cinematic at all. This is why the "new" arri alexa s35 is a 4.6k cinema. This is why, most of the time, the alexa is used as the main camera, and the helium is used as an additionnal camera, to shot special stuff.

i own a scarlet mx and i see no reason to upgrade to helium right now - helium does have more framrates, better iso and dr, but those are just technical aspects, but when it comes down to the raw image in a control light envairment there is no difference, in fact i prefer image from the mx since it is less sharp and is more film like.

You had a longer lens on the scarlet huh?

The downside of the Helium is that the sensor size is about the same as the Scarlet but at peak resolution. If you want to shoot at 4K on the Helium the crop is massive and most lenses become useless

Hello I have a question, I can pick up a used RED SCARLET X set for less than half the price of Komodo, is it worth it to get the newer camera? Or I would be better off spending the xtra money on something else? I mainly shoot narrative/commercial projects and with the camera revolution I'm thinking of picking up one to own instead of just renting it. I live in South East Asia hence its not something we can just buy with our income so it will be a investment on my part. Any thoughts on this?

The Scarlet X takes a beautiful image but its definitely dated. The prices are going to continue to go down on them. That is true of almost any camera though. The big benefit of the Komodo is higher frame rates in 4k and 6k. The Scarlet is limited to 36fps in 4k with a 1.6 crop. I personally just picked up a Scarlet MX and find the image to be beautiful. I am happy with the sensor but I would have preferred the Epic MX for the higher frame rates and 5k.

it really depends on your work - if it's for high-profile clients then invest in never future proof camera
