I'm 61 and bought the 2023 RC390 GP edition. I been riding for 40 years and I love the KTM. Brings back memories of my TZR 250, RZ350 and the likes. Sure it makes a great beginners bike but don't over look it if your more experienced rider. This KTM puts more smiles on my face per mile then just about anything. Have fun and ride sale all.
Hey Drummer, I'm 55, been riding since I was 16, own many bikes, rode the dirt, at 20, I owned a 1985 Yamaha RZ500R (luckily and skillfully didn't die on it)... I now own a prepped but and almost street legal 2018 RC390 and by the Gods, YOU ARE Sooooooooooooooo RIGHT !!!!!
I have riding for 47 years. Currently on my 3rd R1. I just got a ‘23 RC390 and got it broken in. It is a ton of fun on back roads. I feel like it could beat the average sportbike and rider as long as the speeds are generally below 80-85. Beyond that power definitely becomes more of an issue. When my wife had her R3, I rode it plenty. I definitely prefer the KTM for every aspect other than anticipated durability and longevity. Better suspension, better braking feel, better ergonomics, livelier engine, looks less cheap, and way better dash.
The KTM Duke 390 is my dream bike, it's just so much thing for a motorcycle that it makes my eyes shine. Here in Brazil we don't get too many things on popular motorcycles besides an shifter and a throttle.
I've had my Duke 390 here in Australia for a year and a half and it never ceases to amaze me how good it is . Nothing could come close to it for the price.
The KTM Duke 390 is like the dream bike for all college going kids in India, and even though it is pretty expensive at least to an average college student here....still the performance it offers is unmatched.... The duke 250 is quite popular as well

RC 390 is a bike for experienced riders here in India but it's a beginner bike over there. Yam you've got to ride little liquid cooled thumpers like the Bajaj NS200, RS200 and the TVS Apache RR310. The NS is really popular here in India man.
I purchased an RC 390 a few months ago. It's a lightweight bike perfect for city riding and comes with Continental Wet Tyres for excellent grip in rainy conditions.
Different strokes for different folks. The Ninja zx4rr all the way for me. That screaming in line 4 is what makes it an attention seeking unicorn. Yam says its novelty will die off. Probably not. Because no one else makes an inline 4 in the 400cc and 250cc class.
64, bought the zx4rr. Have been waiting on a small four cylinder to come to America. So far I find the bike to be what I wanted. Have never ridden the 390, so will not say I made the correct choice but I also do not think I made the wrong choice. I find the power as is just dandy. May one day get the flash but I’m not in a hurry to. Love the engine!!!
When are you getting the flashed ZX-4RR on track to provide a review of it's performance with lap times? How do laptimes compare with it's competition and 600cc's? Very curious
I really prefer the sound of a 270 degree parallel twin or triple to both these engine configurations. I'd love the see these compared to the CF Moto 450 SS.
I have riden a tonne of bike bikes, but i loooove the RC390 / Duke 390. Coz it feels like you are riding a 300cc 2 stroke bike from yester years and it has a lot of Charector and Charm to it.
I would love a comparison between the flashed zx4rr and the honda cbr 650r. I will have to decide between those two until winter this year and its so hard
I agree with "drummer5140"... had a 2016 KTM rc390.. am 67 years old and been riding everything from 50cc to 1200cc bikes, MX to Trials to Track and Crusin' for 54 years.. and had the most fun ever on that 390! For the money the KTM is a very good bike and value so something I would spend my money on (I own a Duke 390). For what you'd have to spend to get the Kawasaki I could come up with a long list of other similar priced bikes I'd rather own. IMO the Kawasaki is still an awesome bike but way overpriced and once the small number of novelty purchasers get theirs you'll be able to negotiate a price more appropriate to the bikes actual value!
Worth mentioning is adding detachable panniers or saddlebags to the KTM look totally appropriate, and make it a much more useful and functional bike. Not so much the Kawasaki, IMHO.
It's not a matter of decision for me! I've owned the KTM RC 390 for a year now. I love her! But I'm also a big Kawasaki fan. That means I'll buy the small 4-cylinder as soon as it's available in Germany! 😂
As I was riding last night and thinking about the ZX4RR I was thinking exactly this... Kawasaki didn't hit the spot with this one. The RC390 is much more appealing given the 3000 bucks that separates them. The flash results weren't anything amazing tbh.
@williamdavis4809 Yes it will, no doubt about it. As I said even with the tune I don't see a single reason why would anybody pick the ZX over the 390. Tbh the ZX6 has been updated a few days back and it makes the ZX4 look pointless...
I don't see the Ninja as a good starter bike for anyone but the most disciplined riders, that thing is instant trouble. Much like the SV650, it's far more capable than the numbers suggest.

Nope. My dealer says 30% of the RS660 as they arrive from the factory are unsellable. Unsellable because they have quality control issues at the factory. One of them didn't even start out of the crate.
Absolutely this. I mean, both zx4 and the zx25 are just novelty sound machines. Zx25 sounds better, cheaper, they both lack usable torque. The zx4 missed its mark for that price point because I'd rather have an r7 or cbr650r for that price. In my country, zx4 cost as much as these two.
So @1988 or so Yamaha sold the FZR400, with @55 hp. From what I remember, the best handling bike of the era, regardless of displacement. Over 30 years later, Kawasaki bring a 400cc, four pot with the same hp. Progress? Idk about that.
Most viewers here will have by now seen FortNine's non-review review of the ZX4RR ... RF9 ran a simple calculation and estimates it's capable of 92HP. (The Euro computer can't allow it to make that kind of power and still be emissions legal.)
Any rider in puerto rico watching this?? I have wanted to get into motorcycles ever since I was a kid but the roads and drivers here are so bad that it just scares me to even think about it. On the other hand, I should live my life the way I want to so im at a crossroads
How is reliability/durability of the RC 390 now?? Id love to get one but as a track bike how much would I be dumping into a 390 single cylinder to keep it running?
As an owner of a Ninja 400, I gotta say that, unless you're going to use it as a track toy, the ZX4RR is pointless: too heavy, waaaay too expensive, you have to do a lot of things to get it really ready (perhaps just as much as a Ninja400?) and specially, if you are a beginner rider or you want to use it as a jack-of-all-trades bike, a Ninja 400 fills the gap way better. All that being said, if you have the money and you have a bit of experience with bikes and want the ZX4RR you wouldn't regret it as long as you acknowledge that there are way cheaper options out there, but my recommendation would still be the Ninja 400 (or the KTM RC390, which is quite cool and sporty, too).
Although I have never driven a zx-4RR, I believe that cycling in the city with a ninja 400 is better because it can achieve better torque performance at low revs
Hi yammie, love the content. Do you have a discord where I can connect with other riders and get some help with repairing my motorbike? Thanks in advance
Hey, my dad and my motorcycle instructor have told me not to shut the bike off with the kill switch but i see everyone do it so is it actually bad or they lying ?
Hey Yammie. What tire pressures are you using with the Bridgestone RS10s on track? I have a Ninja 400 with the same tires and the recommended track pressure of 28F and 26R cold seems too low for the tire.
All these Moto journalists need to stop calling these beginner bikes. None of you are riding these things to their potential let alone the 600 and 1000cc superbikes
Sounds like the ZX4RR is trying to be a "Superbike". Too bad it has to cruise the streets knowing that at any moment, it could meet up with the only REAL "Superbike" - the Venom Boom BD250!
If the 390 was increased to 450 it would make about 10 more hp and 5 more ft lbs of torque… probably only cost 800 more bucks and probably weigh only 10-15 more lbs. could we only imagine…. While the zx-4 should be about 2 grand less to make more sense
KTM is actually planning to replace this 373cc thumper to a more powerful and reliable 450cc 270 degree crank twin cylinder engine that'll put out 55 horsepower. Look up the CFMoto 450SS, it uses the same exact engine.
@@OverKilL413 They can always just restrict it to 48 for A2 licenses, I think they did something similar to that for the rs660 or tuono 660 at some point
@@OverKilL413 good point about A2… but they could tune it to make exactly 48 hp but boost the torque closer to 10 lbs which would be insanely good (especially for the Adventure)
@@SwoosheD_ completely forgot about that relationship. Does make me wonder if CF will let them use that motor. I know Cf moto has access to KTM motors but not sure if it works both ways
The Duke 790 is the same price and weighs the same but with way more hp and torque, no brainer, when compared to the kawi. RC 390 all fucking day wins this one.
Hey Yamm, would you please share with us your thoughts on the possibility to see Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda joining the fray on the 400cc 4 cylinders ???
Not gonna happen. The other Japanese companies already have established money maker models and it would make more sense to focus on them. Honda and Suzuki have already developed new parallel twin engines which are great. Yamaha just seems intent on making small updates to their line of bikes.
I have a ninja 400, and from an ergonomic perspective. Weight etc it’s awesome. I wouldn’t spend 12000 on it. However. The bike I wanted was the Yamaha fz6R. In-line 4, for that sound.
My pick: ZX4RR I have a friend that rides a RC390 on track (track only) and KATOOOOOMED!!! his engine twice! (Its now rebuilt and supped up from a great local engine builder)
ride my second 390 (and before a 125 before) they ride godlike. not unter 5k rpm thats where they are pretty bad and shaky cruising is pretty annoing. :D ktm rc quality is super bad. the front sprockets wobble from factory.. the engines need oil after 5k km (1k of them just super cruisy riding because they were brand new) its about 250ml/1000km. the oil filters are full of iron filings. i change the oil all 4000km because of that. you need water and a towel to wipe off the paint of the rims. the stock chain is dead after 10000km. just poor quality in every part. but it rides so good that i decided to buy it again, give it a chance again, and having fun with it again.. but i really dont recommend it for somebody who dont knows how to maintain, repair it, have no second bike, or a lot of money.. because this thing is a moneypit. I hate to love it. zx4rr is not availeble in germany :/ but i think it has japanese quality so.. what could happen? my gsxr and my dads bikes just need oil changes and fuel :D absolutly no problems with them.
Dude I live in india I have an adventure 390 as my beginner bike and I have owned it for 2 years I have ridden the new rc 390 and its awesome and it costs around 4700 to 4900 dollars and the ninja zx 4rr costs around 13000 dollars ex showroom and even more on road so it's just not worth it at all where I live to buy the ninja
I'm 6.4 and 19 years old, I'm currently riding a KTM RC390 2017 and I have to admit I feel pretty comfortable, although it may look a little weird. Unfortunately, I cannot say much about other sportbikes, as I've never ridden anything else, but I plan on riding sportbikes for the next years
Right now, I am 100% cross shopping the RC390 and the CFMoto 450SS. That's the real comparison! China haters need not apply. (Especially because KTM and CFMoto are huge affiliates) Which is the better bike out of the box, period. The ZX4RR is not what beginners are looking at. The ZX is for people who have or have had other bikes and are wanting to try something unique. Although the ZX4RR is a truly awesome bike, the price point is just too high for most beginner bike shoppers. I really don't see any "beginner bike" that compares to the RC390 and the CFMoto 450ss. HP, weight, price, features, they are very close on all specs. Just my feedback for ya.
He said it himself, the ninja h2 blows... I'm just playing. Everybody knows kawasaki has great bikes, but i can't get over how bad the pull and torque is for 10 grand. If you get it flashed, everything else is fine for ten grand. I think the zx4 is better than the rc390... I just don't think it's literally twice as good. The passing power is atrocious for the price. I'd rather have an r7, rs660 or zx6 if that was my budget. It's worth saving up a couple more grand for that much more bike.
Im pretty sure the correct answer is to buy an older 600 for 3-5k and learn the ways on that. No way i'd spend the 13k on a bike that could probably get ripped by a 25 year old suzuki bandit.
Why did you even bother with this video? It's like comparing Ninja 650 to ZX6R. I literally took 390 for a test ride yesterday. Vibration is horrible, power drops in low RPMs, and riding position is questionable. It's like a little puppy barking at a German Shepherd when compared to the inline 4 power.

Zx4r over rc 390 any day if I have the money
Agreed
The kawi for the motor alone
All these Moto journalists need to stop calling these beginner bikes. None of you are riding these things to their potential let alone the 600 and 1000cc superbikes
RC390 had the best looks bs4 2020 model bs3 modle Man i wish they still sold old bodyparts
Sounds like the ZX4RR is trying to be a "Superbike". Too bad it has to cruise the streets knowing that at any moment, it could meet up with the only REAL "Superbike" - the Venom Boom BD250!
Can the 390 be flashed too?
If the 390 was increased to 450 it would make about 10 more hp and 5 more ft lbs of torque… probably only cost 800 more bucks and probably weigh only 10-15 more lbs. could we only imagine…. While the zx-4 should be about 2 grand less to make more sense
KTM is actually planning to replace this 373cc thumper to a more powerful and reliable 450cc 270 degree crank twin cylinder engine that'll put out 55 horsepower.
Look up the CFMoto 450SS, it uses the same exact engine.
Would not make that much sense for the European market, because A2 motorcycles are limited to 48 hp, still sounds interesting
Is kawi the only one with a 400 racebike
The Duke 790 is the same price and weighs the same but with way more hp and torque, no brainer, when compared to the kawi. RC 390 all fucking day wins this one.
I would love to see you do a review of the cf Moto 450 ss
Hey Yamm, would you please share with us your thoughts on the possibility to see Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda joining the fray on the 400cc 4 cylinders ???
Not gonna happen. The other Japanese companies already have established money maker models and it would make more sense to focus on them. Honda and Suzuki have already developed new parallel twin engines which are great. Yamaha just seems intent on making small updates to their line of bikes.
But did ya see yams, quad yams!
I have a ninja 400, and from an ergonomic perspective. Weight etc it’s awesome. I wouldn’t spend 12000 on it. However. The bike I wanted was the Yamaha fz6R. In-line 4, for that sound.
The KTM actually has a 32.44 inch seat height, not 32.8
No comparison between a 1 cylinder and inline 4 lmao🤣
My pick: ZX4RR
I have a friend that rides a RC390 on track (track only) and KATOOOOOMED!!! his engine twice! (Its now rebuilt and supped up from a great local engine builder)
What year?
Typically Chinese trash!
Any possibility it could have been your friend?
Its way easier to fix a popped thumper than a blown 4 cyl
ride my second 390 (and before a 125 before) they ride godlike. not unter 5k rpm thats where they are pretty bad and shaky cruising is pretty annoing.
The KTM RC 390 seems to be a great little bike!
Long time viewer, still haven’t subscribed…
could you compare cf moto 450 n zx4r as they both produce hp in us market
yams you need to try the cfmoto 450ss out, i think it will surprise you. and since cfmoto own ktm, it already has the right dna
Bro do some reviews under 200cc chinese bikes.
Would love any of these as a first bike 🤞🏾🤞🏾
I am 6.3 with 37 inch inseam , do you guys think that I can fit on any superbike ?? Please recommend me.
I'm 6.4 and 19 years old, I'm currently riding a KTM RC390 2017 and I have to admit I feel pretty comfortable, although it may look a little weird. Unfortunately, I cannot say much about other sportbikes, as I've never ridden anything else, but I plan on riding sportbikes for the next years
I bought the 2024 Rc390 I love it
Right now, I am 100% cross shopping the RC390 and the CFMoto 450SS.
Im getting that cfmoto 450sr this end year 😎👍
@@jarrolightfeather4703 It's a great choice!
Bro Does That Give Away Come To India.
not comparable- ninja 400-rc 390 yes....
North America? I thought your in Texas 😆 🤣
I Bleed Orange so my decision is bias.
LOL, due to less regulation... ZX4RR is 81HP in here....
Even more proof that Yammie HATES Kawasaki
He said it himself, the ninja h2 blows...
I'm just playing. Everybody knows kawasaki has great bikes, but i can't get over how bad the pull and torque is for 10 grand. If you get it flashed, everything else is fine for ten grand. I think the zx4 is better than the rc390... I just don't think it's literally twice as good. The passing power is atrocious for the price. I'd rather have an r7, rs660 or zx6 if that was my budget. It's worth saving up a couple more grand for that much more bike.
what’s the point when they don’t sell small 4 cylinders here in India…
ill take the Kaw XR 900 naked thank you very much!
a four cylinder bike for a puny 400cc? no, nah, get the KTM RC390, single cylinders all day
Im pretty sure the correct answer is to buy an older 600 for 3-5k and learn the ways on that. No way i'd spend the 13k on a bike that could probably get ripped by a 25 year old suzuki bandit.
I am looking at getting a starter bike for myself and hear a lot of people recommending a 600 to start, but i really dont want to die
zx4rr vs ninja 400 when
The kawi is almost 2.5x the real world price of the KTM. Not a good comparison
Hahaha, I was just comparing these two bikes today as I want to buy new one :P
Sick Mom joke brother.
It's not which is best, it's which will run in 3 years.... we all know which one will and which one will not.
yeah??? which one
not the ninja 300 or the 400(both of which are more expensive) but he zx4!!!
For the love of Christ get that pipe changed !!
PLEASE review the CFMoto 450ss PLEASE!
Yes!
