I personally started my reading habit initialy from ( non fiction) watching pictures in newspapers, then reading something which perked my interest, then promoted to the level where I will complete 1 week newspapers in one sit on Sunday,(fiction) started by comic, then reading fanfiction of my favourite fandom/ movies now reading is my only habit im doing most of the time.
It definitely have so many pros
Reading newspapers made me aware of the ongoing events, somehow gave some level of confidence, created and taught to accept different opinions, gave different view on life,
Reading fanfiction made me escape the reality, gave me perspective, ofcourse taught to me to emphatic,
    It definitely changed me😊

Another reason could be that reading books would enable us to have more nuanced emotions, as opposed to broad emotions like happiness and sadness, and this is proved to have a positive effect on the mental well being. Explaining further on this, every emotion activates a set of bodily cues. If the emotions we experience are nuanced and fine grained, then the bodily cues would also be different for each of these emotions. So if you have 15 emotional states, then you have 15 bodily reaction blueprints. But if have only 2 emotions, then your body would know to react in only two ways, leading to a very inefficient body budget.
Ideas are from the book - "how emotions are made" by Lisa Feldmann Barrett

Thanks for the info🌟🌟 I always read fiction... bcz I feel that for me reading itself is a relaxation 😌 I have actually experienced..whenever I lose control over my emotions , I read books and automatically it calms me down.. and when I don't feel sleepy , I read books... it's like reading brings me to a neutral state of mind.. but since I read a lot of fiction, my parents won't agree with it most of the time.. they think it's a waste of time to read story books..still I never care about it bcz I know and feel the power of it and benefit from them..I will definitely show this video to ppl whos think reading fiction is good for nothing..I can go to enormous number of places without even stepping out of my house❤ and I literally try to recommend books to ppl I know and my frnds.. I don't have many reading frnds and hence I cannot even discuss about a book or an emotion or my thoughts to them.. bcz of reading, nowadays using phone or social media unnecessary feels like a sin or burden to me 😅
