This design HAS to be award-winning! The concept of keeping part of it "in ruins" is outside-the-box and just shows how much talent you have. It would be amazing if the person who bought this was recommended to you, and you got to create this!
It is gorgeous. I like how you, went ever so plainly, classic black and white with everything and muted everything down in order to let the original, 🤔 awe inspiring stone-build masonry and its pattern and natural texture speak, gosh it looks gorgeous . And you have made it look all so easy to execute too, showing and sharing exactly how you did all that. And the fire place ? Wow ! But even though you have made that look easy, and done it simply smart, I bet it was a total labour of love. Filled with challenges to overcome. It is totally I wish and completely gorgeous. I love it. Thankyou. 💜
Simply brilliant. I love your use of existing materials and how you meld them from one end of the building to the other. I questioned your placement of the kitchen in the south/west but see it works out as place of gathering or quiet respite as the sun sets. I’m most pleased by the courtyards providing a way to bring the outside in.
You're wonderfully creative and practical in these reimagined spaces. I appreciate how you blend modern and legacy in the new and existing rooms. I wish I could take your design to fruition. Maybe one day! Thank you for the inspiration.
Your designs are simply amazing! I've never been interested in house plans before but now I'm addicted to your channel. Your soft voice is also so relaxing.
It’s a nice idea of incorporating the old and new. From a pure functionally point I feel this design would be more suitable for a warmer climate. Lots of glass and outdoor space will be tough to make work in the winter months. The U value on the glass would need to be very low and very expensive to compensate for the new regs. Nice ideas tho, and I really appreciate talking through the thinking. More architecture projects should do this method as it helps to understand the concept.
I finished watching all your videos and got so sad when I realized that! So now I've just started rewatching hehe my favorites are when you renovate existing structures. I think it's so fascinating and I love watching your creativity come to life. This house in particular.... I watched the video a couple weeks ago and decided that this is where I live in my head now lol thank you so much for your channel fr!!
Absolutely brilliant! You are so very talented. I love this mix of indoor and outdoor living and combined with the respectful treatment of the original structure (which must have sheltered generations of people) is a truly unique home. Thank you so much for putting these out for all of us that may never have the opportunity to work with such a creative architect.
Exactement. Quel talent !
Really like this, with the integration approach. In a residential area I would not have any concerns. What about security concerns in a rural setting, especially when it is not permanently inhabited? I guess the glass could all be laminated acoustic glass, so it’s not easy to break.
Wow 😍 you are truly gifted in honouring the bones of this old building and making them a true spectacle. This video actually made me cry 😭 you are very gifted. I am usually a traditionalist and often dislike the way old and new is merged, but you did it so beautifully and with such care. Truly magnificent work!
I’ve just got as far as your first stage of the design where you created the courtyard out of part of the house. What a great idea. I had to stop the video and make a comment before even finishing and I love the idea so much but right now I’m gonna carry on watching …….well done😊
This is my dream cottage! I am in love with the stone enclosed secret garden, the clever way you managed to enclose the living space and add natural light to otherwise dark spaces. Your designs are visionary.
This is lovely, although the barbecue in breezy Anglesey might not get much use! This lady is an amazing architect. From a stone ruin, she’s made this fantastic house. The flat roof garden is inspired.
Gemma....Your complete process is exceptional and truly values the site, the ruin and a very peaceful lifestyle as well! An architectural/environmental Gem! brian in San Luis Obispo, CA
This is excellent, I love everything about it! I will be using some of these ideas when renovating the adjoining barn of our 19th century home. I want thr barn to be a bit different, modern but timeless, like this little home.
Enjoyed the reimagine very much. I like to stretch my own ideas with your design; it really shows what is possible. The added exterior chimney is an unneeded expense, but this isnt reality so why not.
Hello! This is my second view of your channel and I already love it! I can't stop thinking about a ruin that I saw in my neighborhood when I used to live in Barcelona. It's a typical small building from the 1800's. I've dreamed about how it would look renovated, but it's not even for sale. I would love to see what you would do! I would like to see it!
And, thus, transforming an abandoned ruin into a living work of art. Nicely done. Subscribed. I look forward to seeing more of these. I'm fascinated with this kind of revitalization.
Thank you for this video. You presented a marvelously well-done concept that juxtaposes the very old with the very new, to lovely effect. This makes me wish I lived in Wales. Again, thank you for this video. Subscribed.
Love this work Gemma - what a wonderful thing to be able to bring these places to life again! Your visualisations have rewired my brain in terms of being able to see possibilities where I may not have in the past. Thank you!
I love the design. BUT! If i had one thing to pick at...it would be to leave the cottage natural. That way. When the English ride through, we can jump out and raid their wagons. All that modern glass would just get in the way. They'd be able to caught reflection of our shiny swords through the pane. Something to consider when redesigning an old ancient ruin. Accessibility to raid on riding English
Stunning. Love the way you handled incorporating the stone structures in different ways. Kitchen is far too small for my liking and would probably have taken more of the terrace area for it.
I like this, just curious about how you could make best use of the heat energy from the two fires/chimneys since they're both not centrally placed in the building
I love how this video was made. Step ny step you can easily see what she was talking about :) When I visit the historical ruin nearby I always imagine having furniture inside :D What aboout water/ gas in this house? Is it a composting toilet?
Being from Canada, I wonder about the lack of insulation. Aren’t the stone walls liable to be damp and cold? Also, sadly, a ruin like this would be bulldozed and never restored or renovated. It looks lovely but impractical to my Canadian eyes.
Wow!! What wonderful and stunning ideas you have come up with!! I so love the little courtyards and the blend of old and new, and the wonderful feeling this cottage would have. How terribly clever you are!! PS: I am subscribing today!
That’s fantastic. The most ingenious and creative thing I’ve seen done with an old stone building. I’ve got two long thin stone ruins on my property in West Wales and am fascinated how you created this space
Would the original aspect choice be designed for the afternoon sun to heat up the end wall? I'm told Wales, not to mention the rest of the UK, can get rather cool in the evening. Having lived in a couple of stone-built houses on the other side of the equator, they keep cool for a couple of days and then they become Scotch ovens for the rest of summer if you keep the windows closed.
So lovely. This would be such a great vacation home. One thing though is that I have a skylight window in my bedroom and really don't care for it. When I am sleeping I like it dark and sometimes I want to sleep in a bit too which is hard if the sun is streaming in. But I realize maybe I'm just lazy 😂
Bare stone walls look good, but you will never be able to keep them clean, and the house will always have a dirty feel - from someone who lived with bare stone walls...
While I appreciate your concept and your presentation, there are several aspects of this design that are not fully explored/optimized. A few examples offered as constructive criticism: You show no utility closet/room. The glass partition behind the sofa seems superfluous, and a missed opportunity to perhaps add (built-in?) storage, book shelves, media, etc.. The small internal courtyard opposite the wood stove should be integrated into the room, not separated by glass in my opinion. The wood stove itself is a missed opportunity because of its conventionality. As shown, it is not a celebration of the former hearth - partly because it is sequestered behind a wall. While the recessed entry is a nice touch, it isn't integrated into the landscape, or highlighted with lighting and/or color. And you show no provisions for coats/shoes upon entry. Lastly, and more a matter of personal taste, I think the wood in the bedroom would better integrate with the stone if it was stained a light gray. Cheers and keep up the great work.
You've totally changed my previously held views on old architecture being redesigned with modern styles. 👌 I love how you've retained an unrenovated space inside everything else that's going on. This is really inspired.
My partner and I are looking to move to Wales and this very "property" came up some months ago. We were interested in using the land to place an off-the-shelf tiny house as we believe that this would be a great way to live in a beautiful part of the world without the expense of a traditional home. If we had the money and sold our present house we would change our plans and absolutely employ you for this building. We hadn’t even considered living in it. We love how you’ve kept the romance of the ruin but also made it luxurious. Genius!
How amazing Ashley. It’s a gorgeous location and with that much land around it has so much flexibility. Let me know if you follow through with your plans and thanks for your kind comments.
I really enjoy the ways in which you incorporate the natural world in your designs and this one, in particular, including the way nature overtakes a structure and makes it a ruin. Nature here embraces the ruin.
This is fast becoming my favourite channel on RUclips!
Thank you!
@@gemmawheeler I am curious. What software was used for the 3D visualisation? Sketchup? Or a CAD software?
Hi Frederica, I use Sketchup
@@gemmawheeler Thank you. Sketchup certainly has some nice rock wall textures and outside environments. Or are those plug-ins?
@@fredericapanon207 ah that’s all added in Lumion where I did the rendering
I am absolutely blown away. I can't begin to tell you how spectacular this is!

Seconded!!
Thirded!!
Fourthed!
I’m
Humbled
I’d have just extended the darn thing in similar coloured stone - this is next level awesomeness
It is gorgeous.

Really gorgeous design as usual. Sacrificing a little utility to bring gardens and the old building into the house is a master stroke. 👏👏👏👏👏
simply gorgious - what a lovely place to live! Creativity at its best.

The stone is definitely the principle character and the led ingredient xx

Gemma’s a genius. Nicely done.
Insulation on the outside is an unusual choice but for the sake of saving space and the beauty of the walls, I'll accept it haha
All i can say is WOW this is absolutely stunning i love it ❤
Truly stunning and breathtaking.
What a super concept and design. Stunning.
Beautiful! I’d love to see the exterior enhanced with some pretty flower beds.

I absolutely love how you’re playing with expectations of what an inside and outside are supposed to look like. Really inspired!

I cannot get over how insanely stunning and just plain ingenious this design in. I might just be ready to sell a kidney to live in a place like this.

Such a lovely idea. My only nit pick would be I don't want guests having to go into my bedroom for the bathroom.
The very same thought occurred to me.
You saved it! Made it liveable and I'm a little in awe of the outcome. Brilliant.
This is delightful from start to finish!
This is absolutely fabulous! Not only creative and beautiful but practical too …!!! Wonderful 👌🏻🎉
Genius, genius, genius.

Wow - this has blown my mind. What a creative transformation!!! Approx. how much would it cost to conduct this renovation???
gorgeous! id love to know how much youd reckon the renovation would cost aswell.

Love this ❤you should look for tholtans which is the name for an abandoned house on the Isle of Man - some real treasures there
Stunning. Love the way you handled incorporating the stone structures in different ways. Kitchen is far too small for my liking and would probably have taken more of the terrace area for it.
Well, it's obviously a vacation house only, so small kitchen shouldn't be a great issue.

I agree - insulation would be important, and I'm thinking Scotland is quite chilly too in the winter. I would like to know more.
Love the concept but i have a concern that insulation is absent from the original structure.
Also the lack of a toilet for guests
Wow!! What wonderful and stunning ideas you have come up with!! I so love the little courtyards and the blend of old and new, and the wonderful feeling this cottage would have. How terribly clever you are!! PS: I am subscribing today!
Interesting, but I would just build it back to sort of how it was but with skylights near the gable wall.
That’s fantastic. The most ingenious and creative thing I’ve seen done with an old stone building. I’ve got two long thin stone ruins on my property in West Wales and am fascinated how you created this space

Very pretty, but too much glass to keep clean.

How many work hours does this take you to complete? I love your videos!!!
😂 A lot!
My heart is pounding. Breathtaking…………Stone so resonates with me. WONDERING HOW MUCH THE RUINS WERE TO BEGIN WITH?
Hi Lulu, there’s a link to the estate agent’s listing in the video description :)
esta muy bueno el concepto, pero al tener tanta relacion con el exterior le falta un toilette....
Immaginazione* tecnica= bellezza
Genuine question- are there no biting insects in the UK? In Canada if we had unscreened open doors like that you would get eaten alive all summer!
Flies and bees are a bigger problem than midges in many parts of the UK
vary Japaneese feeling
Bare stone walls look good, but you will never be able to keep them clean, and the house will always have a dirty feel - from someone who lived with bare stone walls...
so inspiriring from such a tiny space

Lovely plans! If you move forward with these plans, if able, please provide an update:) Good luck!
It seems as if there's another similarly-sized ruin about 200 metres to the south-west of this property.
I really enjoy the ways in which you incorporate the natural world in your designs and this one, in particular, including the way nature overtakes a structure and makes it a ruin. Nature here embraces the ruin.
I love how beautiful this is, respecting the original, while also making it modern.
