  • So the Springfield Prodigy 1911DS...this was a rocky start and in my first video I shared my experience and disappointment. This took some work and I understand the fan boys may not agree, but out of the box it was not good to go. I want this to be a great handgun for the market but it needed some work. I go over what issues I found, how I fixed them and most important...does it run now?

Got the 4 1/4 inch version last week. Love it! My son has the 5” version. I put the first 60 rounds through it with no issues.
That being said 1911 style guns are like the Chevy 350. Everybody makes parts for them and when you get one tuned just right you won’t want to shoot anything else.
You will want to buy more of them.😮

Same here. Adjusted trigger, EGW disco and sear, slide catch, magwell and Dawson 11 lbs. spring with shock buffer and not one single failure after 1300 rounds. It has created a love for 1911's for me as well as made my Prodigy my fave gun. Period. 🙂

Since my last post I’ve added the Atlas tool less guide rod and shock buffer, Wilson Combat Low Lever thumb safety, and the Harrison Design Ignition kit with the true radius sear to my 4.25. This is ridiculous. Y’all remember Kimber had a bunch of complaints about their 1911’s? Then they are like well did you pass the break in period yet? Same thing applies here. I bought the SA prodigy 4.5” and went in with the general understanding that 1) These guns can be picky with ammo and 2) There is an amount of ammo I need to fire to break it in. Half way through the first mag I had a failure to seat into battery. Not uncommon for a new gun. Second mag same thing happened. Roger that. 3rd mag I had 3 light primer strikes. This was due to the crappy bps ammo I was shooting. Had the same issue with that ammo with my P320 xcarry legion. Switched to blazer 115gr and didn’t have an issue firing 200 rounds first day. Took it home. Cleaned it thoroughly. If I charged the slide just right and very slowly,I could get it to stick in the disconnector. Went back to the range the next weekend. Shot 300 rounds of white box Winchester. Zero malfunctions. Took it home and cleaned it. Noticed that the disconnector didn’t hang up anymore. Ive shot about 1200 rounds through it so far and only had those few malfunctions in the first 3 mags. You don’t need to do anything special to this gun other than break it in. If you want something out of the box that’s battle ready, buy a glock. If there is something wrong after the first couple hundred rounds, use the warranty you paid for. From what I’ve seen, SA has done an amazing job with their warranty with good turnaround times. This is a fine gun for the price. And it’s priced perfectly. It feels $1000 cheaper than a staccato but there are ways to help that. I replaced most the mem parts with Wilson combat (hammer, strut, sear) and though it’s not staccato quality, it’s much better than stock.
Bottom line, break in you pistol and find the right ammo first.

Just purchased my DS last week. Put 200 round through at indoor range. Its my first true "range/target" semi-auto. All my others are Glocks, XDs .40 and 9MM Taurus G2 for EDC. As soon as I went through one mag, the smile on my face was ear to ear. WOW. I Did have 3-4 duds. I ejected them and continued shooting. Range master got one of them and noticed no mark from firing pin. Wr agreed that sometimes new pistols need to "break in". After the last misfire, the next 150 rounds or so were good to go, not one more misfire. Ammo? Gun? Who really know. I was using new brass, not cheap still or reloads. This pistol is accurate and so nice to shot. like stated, all my other handguns are the polymer run and gun tacti-cool "combat" type. I have never shoot a pistol that was so smooth, with minimal recoils and back on target. I love my Springfields! My 40 XD has tens of thousands of rounds thought it since I bought it in 2005, all stock, no issues ever. I have M1A, I call it the boom stick, awesome awesome rifle.

Great video! I haven’t had a lot of the same issues that people have been having, but I haven’t put mine through it’s paces like others have. I have been hearing a lot about the disconnect or and mainspring/guide rod. One video I watched had a guy that is positive that the issue is actually with the cerakote finish on the surfaces that mate the slide with the frame. I will post here so people can watch an consider that possibility. The one reason I think he might be onto something is because all of the issues I have been watching that talk about alot of problems indicate that the issue was not immediate. The gun needed to get hot before the issues started happening. My first thought was “well there must be some sort of heat expansion issue going on here” however, with the cerakote theory this guy indicated that the finish was simply wearing on certain parts in those areas and turning into almost a glue like substance due to the friction that was causing the gun to start malfunctioning. He remedied that by racking it like a thousand time and getting the cerakote out of those vital parts of the gun, and now the gun functions flawlessly now.

Put a 12lb Nighthawk recoil spring in my 5”. Took about 500 rounds, but runs with no issues now with the 20 or 17 round mags. Did tune the 17 a little but not much. Disconnector is much less noticeable too. I was frustrated at first cause of the FTF’s, but with very little work it runs great. At 1500 can’t complain.

I got the 4.25 to fill the void of my 2019 staccato P. It has a 4.15” barrel and I refuse to modify it too drastically because it’s value keeps going up so much. I think one of the biggest issues comes from the CeraKote wearing in. I saw another video where they cycled the gun manually about 2,000 times to really smooth out the slide. No lapping compound was used. I’ve put about 400 rounds and cycled it manually another 300-400 times. I’m still getting some CeraKote residue at the back of the gun.
I had the same issue with the disconnector hanging up so I used some Tetra Lube grease on the head of the disconnector, and the hole leading to the trigger group.
The 400 rounds through my 4.25” Prodigy has been flawless so far. I wasn’t happy with the trigger so I got the drop in 1911 trigger group from Nighthawk Precision. It eliminated some critical components that were MIM parts. I also ordered an Ed Brown forged slide stop, but it doesn’t match the finish. If I was carrying this gun, I’d probably use the Ed Brown. For now, the gun is a range toy. I also put the EGW “toolless guide rod” and flat spring.
Mine runs great and I am very happy with it.

Good video. I’ve watched a few others like 10-8 and MAC talking about Staccatos and the Prodigy. I went with the Staccato P for my first 2011. Honestly if you can save up 1500 for a handgun you can save a few more months to get a Staccato which has proven to be a much better gun. I would not be happy to spend that much on a prodigy only to have to work on it to get it running. Especially if you have little experience with working on the platform. But to each their own.

I put about 300 rounds through it and no malfunctions. Before, I couldn’t go 2-3 shots without a malfunction or jamming the gun. It had a 5 1/2 lb trigger, and dropped off my Prodigy at a Gunsmith that I know is very well versed on 1911 guns. I should pick it up in two days with a 3 lb trigger. Can't wait. Then I plan on running about 500 rounds through it this weekend. Should be good fun.

Good evening. I am just coming across this and I must say that (IMO) you have one of the best reviews of the Prodigy on RUclips right now. I just subscribed. Roger Barrera from QVO Tactical has an interesting one as well where he got the pistol working properly, but this one seems to address all the concerns of Prodigy owners. I am not a fanboy by no means, but I would like to see this pistol work. I agree that Springfield manufactures a good product, albeit not great when comparing it to a Stacatto (or other high-end manufacturers) out of the box, but I do feel as though there's a lot of unnecessary hate for the Prodigy in the comment section. Mine is currently at Springfield being reworked for similar issues (I'm keeping my fingers crossed) which leads me to my question: when experimenting with different recoil spring weights, does it make sense to add something like a shock buffer to protect the slide and frame of your pistol? I plan to do some experimentation of my own and am thinking about going that route. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

I’m weird in that I’ll watch a field stripping video before deciding to purchase a firearm. I had a Dawson Toolless guiderod installed in my BUL Armory Government 1911, which made an already good 1911 even better.
The Staccato XC has a toolless guide rod; the Prodigy is a two piece guiderod that requires a hex tool (or replacing the guiderod)

My first magazine with 115 gr Fiocchi was a nightmare. Cleaned it and took it back out and ran 100 rnds 124 gr Blazer. Not one jam. Ran another mag of Magtech 115-no problems. Maybe it doesn't like Fiocchi for some reason. It also hated Federal 124 gr HST but was fine with 115 gr Hornady Critical Defense. Ran another 100 rnds of 124 Blazer and again, no jams. Using factory mags which I think are OK for now. It does seem, however, that the rounds don't exactly want to leap out of the factory mags. At this point, I have less than 300 rounds through it with mostly successful results. Not comfortable putting it on the nightstand just yet but I'm optimistic. It is a joy to shoot I have to say and I don't mind having that extra $1K in my pocket.

So I just bought the 5inch versions. This is my first 1911/2011. I do have one question about the platform. Should the slide rub against the hammer? When I pull the slide back, about half way thru I get some resistance, when I look I don't notice anything except for it touching the hammer? Just want to know if this is normal. Also took it to the range, put about 200 rounds thru it and only had one malfunction. Failure to eject.

I think it’s weird people still use “break-in” period to justify prominent issues with production guns. When the manufacturer designs, builds, and delivers the product, all testing, and Q&A, are done. When you buy a mass produced gun, all you should do out of the box is clean it, then go shoot it. What you shouldn’t be doing is replacing parts, polishing parts, or modifying parts to get to operate properly. Yea, I get it, the old adage 200 round break-in to get parts to align. That’s ok, but some of these need gunsmith work, and alternate parts. A friend of mine has one, after 400 rounds, it was still jamming, feed failures, cycle issues.. I think it’s a safe queen or on consignment now. My SA TRP Operator had slight issues, stiff slide, absolutely HATES Armscor ammo!! But today she spits rounds like an MG42. Quiet as kept, the slide on my TRP is smoother than my Staccato C2..

I really want to like this new pistol but my principles forbid me from purchasing first generation products.
Herein lies the problem. Springfield Armory, like most other manufacturers, does not advertise nor make this information available to the public when they update their products from Gen 1 to Gen 2 and so forth.
SIG is obviously the _worst_ offender by far. Nobody, and I mean *_nobody,_* knows precisely which model/variant/generation of product you may be currently observing. Hence, the reason why I will not be buying a new SIG anytime soon or ever for that matter. I like my SIG's from the old world company we all knew and loved but I digress.
Nonetheless, I will eventually purchase one of these Prodigy models. However, it will have to wait until I acquire my new BUL Armory SAS II Tac 4.25" which I have been waiting to purchase for over 15 months now. Both my wife and I absolutely _love_ products from that country of origin. Which I sadly cannot express here on YT without being silenced for some odd reason.
I am just glad that companies like SA and even S&W with their quasi 1911 aptly named the CSX, are making pistols along this line. Alas, the era of _'Gentleman's Carry'_ (a phrase I coined) is finally upon us!
    Stay classy my friends.

I do not think you are being bias and are honest about the issues you found. With that said saying Staccato does not pay you anything and in the same sentence state BUT they do give me a free 2011 every so often that I use in my LE classes.....come on. How much do those Staccato's you were "GIVEN" retail for? Dude that's literally the definition ition of being paid. You were given something of financial and practical worth in compensation for.....what? Because Staccato is a non profit charity? Nope. It's quite obvious so you can upsell their guns to your LE class students and hopefully net a LE Dept sales contract.
So while I don't very seriously you were not anything but honest about the Springfield Protigy issues let's not try to ruin that with BS whitewash about the relationship and intent and goal of Staccato giving you many thousands of dollars in free guns.
BTW every gun other than some excellent full customs has something that could be done better. How often I your videos on Staccato have you been very open and clear about what those are. Have you honestly reported every functional issue no matter how I frequent or slight you have had with any Staccato regardless of what you may or may not think is the root cause of it?
The issue I when your being compensated by any entity even if your intentions are 100% to ve honest and forth coming there is a subconscious bias that presents itself in your thought process. You either over compensate looking for and magnifying issues or you rationalize or discount issues without meaning too or may e you might hit a true answer. The is you have conditions that bias you period. It's why Judges and lawyers are required to recuse themselves or scientists must list conflicts of interest and who is funding the study. As we can see today with the state of the integrity of the scientific community along with gov agency FDA EPA there not doing a very good job of those and the end result are very damaging all the way around.
The best you can do is be very open about any and all compensation as well as any biases you may hold. Do not try to minimize them or explain them away. It only makes it appear worse. Just state them clearly and that of course it is possible that these things may effect how you perceive these comparisons, reviews and testing. Just acknowledge that while you believe your make every effort to be honest it's possible that these associations may influence you without you consciously realizing it.
That kind of approach usually causes people to give your observations more Wright and shuts down the naysayers that are just looking for any issue, real or hypothetical, to give themselves a feeling of more significance.
Then what the h3ll do I know!?!
