  • Three denominations that I care deeply about are going through difficult moments in their history: The Salvation Army, the Church of the Nazarene, and the United Methodist Church. This summer I am bringing interviews with conservative and progressive voices from each denomination. I am doing this individually with the hope of producing clarity. I am not interested in a debate. Each side will be asked the same questions.
Salvation Army: Christina Tyson and Willis Howell
Church of the Nazarene: Thomas Oord and Brian Powell
United Methodist Church: Adam Hamilton and Rob Renfroe
This week we’re hearing from Christina Tyson, Corps Officer of the Wellington South Corps and Newtown Centre.

I'm just coming to this conversation and religiously following and thanks for this prudent exchange of great ideas, but hold the views of scriptural foundation of our life to continue to guide us.

Great idea! Looking forward to these conversations. I am a former Salvation Army officer whose maternal grandfather was a United Methodist minister, who currently worships with a Church of the Nazarene congregation, and I'm on the conservative end of the spectrum. Thank you for this!

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament were given by the inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.

I cannot comprehend how you can call yourself a church when you have abandoned the foundational belief of Scripture as the inspired word of God. Intellect, reason, culture and experience are vaporous and ever changing. I left the TSA church in 2022 for this very reason. Thank you for the podcast. Keep shining the light of truth to expose this apostasy.

I think I was most bothered by her comment, "we need to look at shifting our understanding in relation to what happens in the world." This perspective summarizes many of her responses to your questions. It's a focus on a worldly view or shifting interpretation rather than a defence of orthodoxy that I will expect to hear more about in Part Two of this conversation.

Andy , i appreciate your ability to be loving and kind in the midst of such heresy. She is lost in her own deception, I love how you are a strong defender of your personal biblical position of the full counsel of God

Thanks for this conversation, and appreciate you sitting back and listening. As someone who you would label a 'progressive', I do feel the assumptions you make at the end are wrong. 'Progressives' do take a high view of scripture and believe it to be God's Word, just as much as you do. There are many deep-thinking theologians who support an affirming reading of the Bible, while believing the Bible to be the inspired Word of God. It's insulting for me, as a Christian, when you assume I don't value Scripture as much as you do, because I have a different reading of Scripture.
Additionally, you seem to be conflating the concept of same-sex relationships with unjust behaviours, such as pedophilia. These are two completely different conversations: one is about two adults with equal power choosing to love each other. The other is about the abuse of power, injustice, cruelty and inflicting trauma on someone with less power. In fact, as we have gone deeper in the conversation about healthy sexuality, we are gaining a greater understanding of the importance of consent and of equal power in intimate relationships.
When Christina talked about the 'trajectory', I took that to mean that when we read the Bible we see a call to greater and greater justice and love. Jesus laid out his Kingdom of love and justice, Paul paved the way, and we - as the Christians that have followed - are learning over the centuries what it means to advocate for deeper and deeper love and justice in our lifetimes: In the name of Christ, we have fought against slavery, looked after those in poverty, made space for people with disabilities, become more compassionate about divorce ... these are all a result of the Christian ethic of challenging power and standing up for those on the margins.
Those of us who, as followers of Jesus, are working to show greater love and justice to LGBT+ people (who have been traumatised and marginalised by the church) are continuing this call to justice.
Also, as a Salvationist, I would always say that I follow Jesus first, his teachings, and the Bible - not the Army doctrines. If we put them on a pedestal and equate them with the Bible, that is idolatry.

Christina does a wonderful job here. I appreciate her wonderful candor. Andy, you comparing same-sex relationships to pederasty is uncouth and bad form.

Tim, It is true that some people find their identity in having multiple partners. Similarly, some are open about their sexual desire for children. I was simply wondering if the line if she draws a line with monogamous relationships.
