The conversation with auditor went something like this: AUDITOR: “What’s a Nazarene?” ME: “Don’t know exactly, but my understanding is it came out of the Holiness movement.” AUDITOR: “What’s that?” ME: “Believe it came out of the Methodist Church”. AUDITOR: “What’s that?” ME: “Well, it’s the denomination founded by the work of Charles & John Wesley” AUDITOR: “Who are they and now can we get in touch with them?” me: “I do believe I heard they have died”. i was a member of the Nazarene church at the age of 21 fresh out of Vietnam .i got saved in that church by Gods Holy Spirit .For about a month i had been in prayer to receive the Holy Spirit and one night alone in my room God came and sealed me in the name of Jesus Christ across my forehead .I told the pastor and he said that was the gift of the Holy Spirit .I did not speak in tongues and had full control even though the Spirit indwelled me .thats when i knew that the Spirit of God is meek and humble and will not force a person to do anything .I heard angels singing in a unknown language and thats the night i got truly saved
When I was getting baptized I asked a brother would he say in the name of Jesus the Nazarene. This was not a Nazarene church or anything like that, just a baptism in sea. Do you attend a church now and if so which one?

I actually found this video due to my father who believed in Nazarene Christianity on the last years of his life. He died when I was eight and throughout my life I’ve always tried to learn more about his beliefs as he was incredibly incredibly wise and well read on theology. He was in Vietnam as well and became much stronger in his faith after what he witnessed.
John Wesley was focused on rectifying two weaknesses he saw within the Church of England: lack of personal conversion and commitment to living a disciple's life. Those are still challenges for every denomination.
"Personal conversion" has left millions of professings Christians in despair over their salvation based on whether they "feel it" or not. Out of all the heretics of American/British Christianity, John Wesley has probably caused the most destruction.
@@RepublicofE Actually, true personal conversion will leave you with peace, as you will know for certain that your mindset is changed, and you will also see your actions change as you exhibit fruits of the spirit. So you're right in saying that too many people try to rely on emotionalism, a true personal conversion is not vague at all.
@@richardjones6024 Imagine telling your kids that they can't be actual Christians until they have an arbitrary conversion experience that nobody seems able to clearly define except those who claim it results in speaking gibberish, and then wondering why so many church kids secretly become atheist in their preteens and then leave the church visibly by college. That's where "personal conversion" theology has gotten us. Especially when paired with the false doctrine of "age of accountability", because if a kid passes that magical age without feeling like they've had a conversion experience then they're left to believe they've apostisized.

I'm not a member in the Nazarene church. But I learned the gist of Wesley's theology from the scholars of the Nazarene Church. The one who influenced me profoundly was Dr. Kenneth Grider whose insights into the doctrines of God, atonement, predestination, and holiness were so valuable to me. He criticized Modalism, Calvinistic predestination, Penal theory of atonement, etc. with well-prepared research and biblical basis.
I apreciate the lengths the Nazarine Church in Minot ND went to bring me into the fold as a child and the fantastic foundation they helped nurture in me and others. Over 40 years since I was there and shall always be greatful for David and Jolene LaBar, Jesse Bonness, and pastor Becker. You all gave and I recieved the greatest gift, thank you :)
I first heard the Gospel in a Nazarene church in high school and believed. But it was predestined for me to become a 5 pointer by God’s grace 😂. Grateful for my time in the church and the people there. COTN is basically Baptist around here.

We believe God did all the saving and we just responded to the call of the Holy Spirit. To simply explain to you. God the Father planned Salvation God the Son Accomplished Salvation God the Holy Spirit Apply Salvation....when we believe after they have convicted us of our sins and lead us into true repentance.
When I was a kid attending a Nazarene church, drinking alcohol, dancing, or attending a party or going to the movie theater was a no no! Super strict. And if a women walked in dressing kind of scandalous, other women would approach her and ask her to cover up or sometime they would lend her a more appropriate word robe to wear.

Fourth generation Nazarene here - These are still our beliefs and are addressed more in private than in public. Many of the “old time” beliefs such as no movies, no jewelry (men and women), women can’t cut/color hair or wearing pants, men to wear only Blue/Black/Tan suits and no facial hair/long hair and etc. were all man made (legalism). And are no longer practiced. In the 6+ decades that I have been in the COTN, many things have changed. The music is different, the style of service is not as formal (depending on each individual church). As Nazarene pastor’s wife once said, “The church is still teaching the love of Christ but is presenting it in a different way”.
I am a Nazarene. Have been for the last 56 years. It is a holiness church. I have seen a prostitute walk in on a Sunday morning watched the church welcome her with open arms. 2 weeks after first coming she was born again. The church helped her get clean and rebuild her life. She is a lay minister with a dynamic ministry helping others get out of that lifestyle. Yes the church holds us to higher standard just in as God does. We are in the world but not of it. That being said the church of the Nazarene is a missionary church.we love and wish to save the souls of the lost. Any church will have standards for their people.
A very concise and accurate definition of who I learned to be in the Church of the Nazarene. I really appreciate how quickly and clearly you expressed our traditional viewpoints. However, the manual does not reflect the whole story. A new movement toward "feeling" the Spirit, "listening" for the voice of God (a real voice), and repetitive (contemplative) meditations, is being taught in most of their higher learning institutions. We only found one that is avoiding, instead of teaching, "Spiritual Formation" classes, which are based on New Age practices dressed up in Christian lingo. After 35 years, we are currently distancing ourselves from some of the results of this teaching as old school pastors are retiring and younger pastors coming in, more concerned about numbers and what the "spirit" is telling them, than what the Bible says in black and white. We fear for our Brothers and Sisters who are in danger of opening up to things they do not recognise as dangerous.
You are right. The CotN has many new issues that are strange. I counselled my kids to not attend any Nazarene college, although our eldest daughter attended Olivet for a semester (we're from Arizona) and it seemed to be one of the most conservative and traditional of the colleges. I plan to attend the next General Assembly (if we ever have another one!) and find out more of what's going on. My wife and I have been troubled for awhile, but our particular Church Family is wonderful and so...we wait.

I attended Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in the late 90's. Even back then there was a definite problem with professors teaching their own doctrine and ideas instead of what they had contractually agreed to by taking a job at a Nazarene University. Unfortunately, these changes almost always move in the direction of erosion, often times with the naïve goal of attracting more students. Last year the President of NNU sent out an email siding with the radical left, stating that our nation is fraught with systemic racism. At this point I don't view NNU as a Nazarene institution anymore and I would strongly urge students to avoid it.

Obviously you have great disdain for the Church of the Nazarene. The main merger took place in the (then) small town of Pilot Point, Texas (it is quickly becoming another DFW suburb). There is a plaque at the local Nazarene church commemorating the event.
Another note. Many Nazarenes would say we do not believe you “lose” your salvation. As if, salvation is a “thing.” Rather, it is a state of relationship; therefore, we would say: an individual can willfully and purposefully abandon the faith. Not “lose” but abandon the faith. That makes it seems like if salvation is a thing like a “toy”, I lose the toy, and “oh my I can never find it.” That is incorrect. We believe an individual can apostatize and/or make a willful choose to abandon the faith. What it comes down is: do we lose our ability to choose? We say no, even after salvation, we do not loose free will. If God is love, He truly gives choice because love without choice renders meaningless. If God is love and takes away your ability to choose, is he really a loving God? This is why we believe a person never loses his ability to choose and therefore can willfully and purposefully abandon the faith. I understand I used a theological argument and some might ask, give me biblical evidence. While there are many, I concentrated my undergraduate paper on Timothy. Review clearly 1 Timothy and Paul says some have wandered from the faith because money. In addition, he talks about some that abandoned the faith. Among others that we can use.
Once a son always a son. John Wesley was never a son because in order to be born again, a person must put all their faith in the Gospel of Jesus. A person can be adopted into the family and have a good relationship or a bad relationship with the father. Rewards/blessing come through obedience. Chastening comes from disobedience. Both obedient and disobedient children of God go to heaven. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hand of the living God.
@@pray4Liberals Two or three things I want to point. One, we are The Church “of the Nazarene,” who is the Nazarene? It is Jesus the Nazarene. We are not The Church of John Wesley. While our doctrinal heritage is Wesleyan, we are clear whose church is our church. Just like we all speak English and are Americans. Not all have the same heritage. I am of Guatemalan heritage, but consider myself an American as I have lived all my life except for 5 years here. I am sure there are some that are of African, Asian, European heritage. There is one thing that unites us, no matter the doctrinal heritage and it is Jesus, what he did in the cross and his resurrection. Two, you said, “We are save by placing our trust in the ‘gospel’ of Jesus.” Are we saved by what we believe, or in WHOM we believe? We are saved in whom we believe. “Gospel” simply means “good news.” The news itself does not do anything. It is if we place our faith in Jesus in what he did in the cross and his resurrection that saves us. Trust in Jesus, a person saves us; trust in an “idea” like a good news does not saves us. Three, honestly this whole eternal security vs. present day security is a good “spirited” discussion we can have among brethren, BUT we should NEVER divide over it. There is SO MUCH more that unites us as believers. One of my best friends is an Independent Baptist Brother. We know that there is so much more that unites us, and we are respectful of our different doctrinal heritages. What would if look like if we are more respectful towards each other, and work on things that unite us?

I was raised Nazarene, & I think you described our view of salvation very well. Salvation is a relationship of submission to the will of God. Salvation is not an event. To the Nazarene, salvation (relationship) has a beginning & must be maintained (continued submission to the will of God). It is not a stand alone event (accepted Jesus) that "saves" you regardless your conduct/values/beliefs/actions over the subsequent years. The parable of the sower is the perfect nuanced description of the Nazarene doctrine.
This is a really good video. It is more accurate than most from outside of the denomination and better than several from inside the denomination! I would make three (or really 2 1/2) corrections: First (the 1/2 one), you stated that Nazarenes believe in biblical inerrancy. However, ours is a pneumatological inerrancy rather than the kind of inerrancy held by those in the Fundamentalist camp. - Since you actually read the Article of Faith that explained this, I considered it only a 1/2 correction. :) Second, concerning homosexuality, the church makes a distinction between orientation and action. So, it is more accurate to say that we view homosexual activity as sinful. Finally, and most importantly, we ordain elders and deacons. The language that you quoted that we hold to only one preaching order is in reference to the nature of the two orders. In the Church of the Nazarene, if one professes a specific call to preach, they will be ordained as an elder. If the call to ministry does not include the call to preach, they would be ordained as a deacon. Really good and accurate video, otherwise.

However, in general, "orientation," "temptation," concepts that lead to a choice to act or not act are not, in themselves, viewed as "choice." How we do respond to such is a choice. - I hope that at least helps to clarify what might be considered "a choice," even if it doesn't specifically deal with the question of "a medical condition."
@@a.kamileon this is interesting. I am a current student at Nazarene Theological Seminary and a Latino Nazarene Pastor. I think The COTN is also divided among the races in this subject matter. Most all Latino Nazarene will say it is a choice as with any sin. We choice to sin. There is a fundamental Nazarene wing among Latinos that is unspoken. There are some younger White Nazarenes that seem to be a bit ambiguous, has been my experience at NTS. Some thoughts. I don’t consider myself as fundamental as other Nazarene of Latino heritage. But I do view as sin. As well as any sexual activity outside of marriage whether heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual.
I guess I'll say that the church I've been attending for the last couple months has been very welcoming and open to all. There's room for interpretation in a lot of what was said. I'm sure there are cult like churches of this kind but I don't believe the one I'm attending is one of them. Great info though. Thank you
I went to a nazarene church today. The pastor said you have to repent you're sins but only to God. Alone is acceptable.. He wants you to do more but was clear that is all that is required.
Just so nobody gets overwhelmed with the claim that Nazarene is the largest WESLEYAN-HOLINESS denomination, let's get some perspective. The two original Orthodox Churches (Roman Catholicism and Greek Orthodoxy) together represent about 86% of Christianity in the world. The whole Wesleyan-Holiness movement represents something like .06%
There is a huge difference between the beliefs, structure and etc. of the Orthodox Church and the Church of the Nazarene and "sister" Wesleyan Holiness denominations such as Free Methodist, Wesleyan, Church of God (Anderson), Churches of Christ in Christian Union, Salvation Army Citadels other independent churches.
At 5:25 I find this acceptance that we humans can't know everything quite refreshing. The opposite, taking unclear Biblical passages and interpreting them to support their preconceived narrative, then arguing with others who have interpreted the same passage to mean something else, far too common.
I attended a Nazarene Church in High School -- over 50 years ago. I recently attended that same church. The Churches have aged -- much like me. I was the guy playing guitar 50+ years ago -- and now the guys playing guitar are my age, today. There are fewer 20-somethings and 30-something, and 40-somethings, and fewer children, too. They appear to have adopted "anointing with oil" as a mild form of faith healing -- which I did not see when I attended, before 1971. Good People, but unwilling to explore Truth. Then again, they have explored scientific explanations since then, in spite of being so against anything other than a strict 6 literal days of creation back then.
I was told that in that same 1972 meeting when it was officially voted on to reject the baptism of the Holy Ghost, a dove appeared and flew around the room three times before flying out of the building.
They don’t reject the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. You just have different terminology. Most likely you are from a church which requires the gift of tongues as evidence before believing that someone has been filled with the Holy Spirit. Just because God worked that way a few times in the past, does not mean He is required to always work that way, everywhere and at all times forever. The Church of the Nazarene uses this Terminology for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: the Filling of the Holy Spirit, the Second work of Grace, and Entire Sanctification. This baptism comes when you feel the conviction to give your entire life and consecrate it for the service and use by God, and you ask the Lord to fill you up with his Holy Spirit to empower you for service. When the Holy Spirit fills you, the Holy Spirit comes to make you holy, to purify your heart, so that you learn to love what God loves and hate the things that lead to sin and death. This empowering grace gives victory over sin and helps transform us into the image of Jesus. Romans 8.28 has often been a favorite inspiring verse to me, but recently the Lord showed me verse 29 is also important, it is God’s will that we be transformed into the image of Jesus, and show the world His love! Also, our focus should not be on what gifts God gives us. We should not be demanding that we must speak in tongues! Rather we should be examining our heart to be sure we have truly repented, completely yielded our whole life to God‘s purposes and truly died to our own will. If we are still walking by sight or feelings or any of our other senses, then it might make sense that the Lord doesn’t fill us with his Holy Spirit yet. But neither should a church forbid speaking in tongues, as the scripture says Do not to forbid speaking in tongues! But in a worship service, it can add much confusion. We should follow Paul’s advice in that area. And concerning what gift God gives us, as his children, our attitude should be gratitude for whatever He chooses to give, and acknowledging that He certainly knows what is best; rather than demanding He gives us specific gifts. Being demanding is another case of not yielding to God’s will. Another wrong teaching is that being filled with the Holy Spirit is only a one time thing. Where scripture says to be filled with the Spirit, it is a continual and repetitive verb form. In English it might be better rendered as “Be being filled!” This is something we need to be empowered with every day, so we can walk in the spirit rather than walk in the flesh, so that we can be full of God’s strength and power, so that we will have the fruits of the Spirit abundant in our life- so that we will have as much love and joy and peace and patience and kindness etc. as we need to meet the needs of people around us. The filling with the Holy Spirit is not for just or primarily for our own benefit; it is to empower us for service, it is to help us show the world what Jesus is like, to give us a victory over sin, to give us fullness of joy so that we have plenty to share. No, I am not a member of the Church of the Nazarene. I do have friends who are and relatives who attend, and I did attend the university of a very closely related denomination which is also under the Wesleyan Holiness umbrella. I was a member of the Nazarene denomination before I left Christianity, this video is pretty accurate about the things I used to believe, and explains why so few Nazarenes proselytize to apostates because we are hopelessly and eternally lost.
@@mattfioretti8494 I don't mind! Thanks for asking! TLDR I left because I realized the reasons I had for believing were insufficient to warrant belief. But to be more specific, no matter how much I tried to love Jesus, I found it became impossible for me to maintain a relationship with someone who never reciprocated, never gave me any reason to believe they loved me back. It was an abusive, unhealthy relationship where I was like a stalker and Yahweh was like a neglectful father who went out for cigarettes before I was born and never returned. I didn't know it for a long time but this is commonly known as the problem of divine hiddenness, basically meaning the Abrahamic god behaves/functions identical to a god that doesn't exist. I realized that men and women created many gods in their own image, not the other way around.

Funny. I always thought that it was Calvinists who saw evangelism as a futile endeavor, since God already knows who is and who isn't going to be saved, rather than going out and finding the "whosoever will", as Nazarenes and Assemblies of God actually do

My wife and I recently left the CotN (a long, painful story) for a Wesleyan Church. Doctrinally very close, though the Wesleyan Church has far fewer congregations. If I have my history correct, the Wesleyans merged with the Pilgrim Holiness Church in 1968. There are still a few PH churches in the upstate New York to Western NC corridor, though some of them go by Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist. Major differences center around external expressions of holiness: attire, hair length, no wedding bands, etc
Fascinated with the ways belief subdivides itself. My own feelings about what Jesus brings - present tense - reminds me of something Granddaddy said once: 'Jesus is the bird and most churches are cages.' Although I don't recommend having a near death experience, my own was life-changing. It's very difficult not to judge and even hate at times, but there's no point in those things. Hence, I ask for God's help on a daily basis - and more frequently. Would that I could see Christ in the face of all people. Blessings to everyone. As a retired minister I look at sanctification as an ongoing process. I don't think that sanctification can be completed on this side of the Grave it is and every day Journey that we as Christians must take towards becoming the Christians the followers of Jesus that Jesus is wanting us to be. These are my beliefs please don't judge me because of them.
Jesus will judge us when we die, and those already sanctified will be perfected as he covers past sins at baptism into his church, Jesus does not 'want' we are obliged. @olivianantwick7603. I left the Nazarene Church for a couple reasons. #1 I questioned the “ entire sanctification” belief. Nobody can live a sin free life. We all fall short. #2 growing up, there were too many “we dont’s” and My boys needed to be in a thriving youth group so we changed denominations to an American Baptist church which was the best choice we ever made. As a youth, I remember no jewelry, shorts,sleeveless tops, movies,school dances,make-up, and mixed “ bathing”(swimming) My sons are christians but go to the church of their choice.
@@cathyblankenship5824 I'm afraid anyone following 'Christianity" is following a creedish cult, not the religion of Abraham. In the OT you will find grace was merited, and it is misreading of verses like Romans 11:6 that have diluted grace to anything we like. We must be baptised from extensive teaching of the OT, and live under grace to be sanctified. I do have alot to say and have a Ytube video series called 'Myths in so-called Christianity', the rules for sanctification are in Romans the gospel of salvation, there are moral obligations but not cultural ones. You might find my videos appealing as they are about ecumenism in the widest sense as there is only one religion from Abraham, but in the world there are claims by Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Mostly I expose untruths in commonly held doctrines, they are now Myths, as I let Paul explain Romans for himself.
It's worth mentioning that over the past 30-40 years our colleges have started teaching that we do not believe in the doctrine of inerrancy. It's almost universally accepted these days by the educational elite that the doctrine of inerrancy is a fundamentalist position and they reject it entirely. They claim that we only believe the bible inerrantly reveals "all things necessary for salvation". In other words, the bible is inerrant in it's revelation of all things necessary for salvation but in other areas there are errors. I have had many professors and pastors explicitly state that the bible merely an inspired history book of how God has revealed himself to mankind rather that the bible itself being God's revelation. All this is to say if you ask anyone educated or involved in teaching at our universities over the last few decades they will deny the traditional view of inerrancy. This view is not widely held at the local church level by the lay person and older pastors or pastors that came from other Wesleyan denominations like the Wesleyan Church or Free Methodists. They will also claim (wrongly) that this has always been the position of our church because that's what they've been taught. Today, if you express a belief in inerrancy you will be mocked and ridiculed.
I can affirm this. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2020 and my Old Testament professor seemed to suggest this way of thinking of the Bible. I don't know if he felt this way about the New Testament too. I believe he was a Nazarene pastor. I didn't agree with that stance
@@dee_7942 if you're interested the best I can tell this thinking started with an article titled "The Leavening of the Church" by J. Edwin Orr. In the article, Orr argued that the church had become fundamentalist in the early 20th century as a reaction to the liberal theology that was popular at the time. He argued that the church's leaders, such as Phineas Bresee and Albert Benjamin Simpson, were influenced by the fundamentalist movement, and that they adopted some of its key beliefs, such as the inerrancy of Scripture and the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. Many other church leaders believed in the inerrancy of scripture. To make things even more ridiculous they claim the doctrine of inerrancy, not just fundamentalism in general, is a completely new idea. They want us to believe no Christians through history believed in the inerrancy of scripture the way fundamentalists do today.

The word "pentecostal" changed in meaning. A couple denominations that merged into the Nazarenes had the word Pentecostal in their name but didn't affirm theologically what that implies today.
When the denomination was founded in 1908, it was originally called the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. However, in 1919, it dropped "Pentecostal" from its name in order to disassociate itself from the Pentecostal movement, which by then had given the term a different meaning.

So.am I tight in saying that the church does not believe in speaking in tongues as evidence of infilling of the Holy Spirit. I really want to know as I'm thinking of attending their university in Manchester but don't want to study in a place where there is a conflict of beliefs.
Hey lovejesus1202012 so currently in the Church of the Nazarene there is actually more of an openness to the gift of speaking in tounges than in the previous generations in fact the 1974 General Convention ruling is not the current attitude of many in the denomination. There are even Nazarene Pastors such as myself who do believe in and practice speaking in tounges but where we would still differ from Pentecostals would be that we believe the gift of tounges is a gift of the spirit but not the evidence of being filled by the spirit. The evidence of that is maturing in love.
In September, 1986 in the town of Medicine Hat, Alberta a 19 year old girl named Melody Joy Reigel, told her church lady friends that she was not going to follow God. She was an adopted girl with two uncles that were ministers in the Nazarene church. She told her girl friends that she did not want God anymore and was going to live as she pleased. Nine days later she was dead. She took a bus to Edmonton and became a prostitute. A john strangled her to death at the Kingsway Motel. Her killer has never been found. For her family there was no closure. Also since they believe that a person can lose their salvation they would have to believe that she went to Hell. That is one of the saddest story's that I know about.
How does the COTN consider Scripture inspired "pneumatologically inerrant" but end up polarized against speaking and praying in tongues? Also, what is their position on deliverance and healing? Will they disfellowship you for casting out demons and laying on hands, or having experienced those?
My guess is that too often in the past the praying in tongues was forced upon people rather than first the Baptizing (n.) of the Holy Ghost upon them in and of itself, i.e. putting the cart before the horse--or worse still, the person not being first genuinely reborn. If and when true, as it often is, this gives occasion to false tongues and emotional excesses rather than the genuine manifestation. Hence, a heavy-handed doctrine of restraint. Pride and ego, really, not wanting as a whole to appear foolish before the world.
...then, too, if a particular pastor has not [hopefully just] yet received the subsequent-to-justification blessing of either the fullness of Holy/Agape' Love and/or the charismata blessing, they will not want to preach and teach it. So to eliminate it from the doctrine of the denomination offers them solace and acceptance.
This is very different from what I recall from my experience with CotN in the early '80s. One thing that rang true was the holiness bit. It was an incredibly destructive belief to the life of the congregation. Instead of grace and support, a congregant's sin lead to judgement, prayer (aka gossip) and various forms of shunning. That, in turn, led to people hiding their sin rather than confessing and seeking help, prayer and guidance. Even within holiness (which I do not and never did subscribe to) I can imagine that there can be mercy out of a desire to guide a fallen person back to grace. But I have found responses to this doctrine to rarely lead to such love. As for not having a particular eschatological view, every Nazarene I knew at the time was a premillennial dispensationalist. And this supposed prohibition of Pentecostalism is a complete surprise. I recall speaking in tongues being designated as a sign that one was still holy or, that is, sinless. Anyhow, it's too bad that the CotN manual spends all that time on how to think about all of the religio-political hot topics rather than how to christlike in dealing with one another's sin.
Some years back I represented Nazarene pastor in an IRS audit. As I recall the conversation went like this: IRS: What is this Nazreen church? ME: Not entirely sure, but believe is came out of holiness movement. IRS: What's that? ME: As I understand it, this came out of the Wesleyan movement. IRS: What's that? ME: Well, the movement which came out of the work of Charles & John Wesley. IRS: Who are they and how can we contact them? ME: My understanding is they've died. May and some of wording wrong after all this time, but this is a true account of the event.

Similar, i have some reformed tendencies but grew up in a nazarene church, in practices that whole argument was ignored and i didnt know about it until after taking an apologetics class. The only thing i disagree is the Armenian, but it was always vague and took me an hour to find anything saying Nazarene are Armenian. Nothing seems to have changed bc free will or predestination has never been a main focus of the church rather the missions and holiness aspects of it

It doesn't matter what sign is on the building, as long as the sign declares that the people who meet there belong to the church that Christ built. The people inside will believe and worship as they are taught in the New testament. They certainly will not join up with any one of the hundreds of man made denominations. It depends entirely on the congregation and pastor. The issue is most likely to be avoided altogether. We are more egalitarian officially, but many individuals are more complimentarian.
The nazarene church tried taking out revelation, (not true revelation early church added it and martin luther wanted to take out like 7 books already decided and made canon) i am a bit confused what the early church and the canon has to do with the church of the nazarene adding books that the original church did not except. While this did used to be the stance of the Church of the Nazarene this isn't really necessarily so anymore many in the denomination do believe in the Biblical speaking in tounges experience but it's a git of the spirit not the evidence of being indwelled by the Spirit.

Being a denomination is simply an entity formally stating their beliefs, and providing a hierarchy which is necessary of all social structures. Even a nondenominational church is a denomination onto themselves, the leader(s) personally believing certain doctrines and conveying such. Conversely, when someone attends a particular church, they most often want to know what that fellowship doctrinally believes, as most people want to be at least mostly in agreement with such--though this is less necessary for some as seems to also be your position and is mine as well.

Also laughable that you consider it an issue. The New Testament churches had distinct differences in practices while the apostles were alive. The churches in Revelations weren't unanimous. The epistles were written to churches with different understandings of doctrine. To coin a phrase 😉, your familiarity with the New Testament is "laughable".

@@roxane1889 My experience in the church is unique as a "pastors kid". The cult like aspect was about control, vailed in what their doctrine is called holiness. No movies, dancing, drinking, smoking. I had to turn down a date to prom because if I attended it would hurt my "witness.".

as a lad i went to a nazarene church. they made the (mistake) of having a full gospel preacher come for a service. well when one of the young girls got filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues it blew up in their face and caused a split in the church. my mom and a couple of her friends took their families and left to go to the church of the full gospel preacher. that was many years ago and i have not been back to that church though i know Godly people that still go there. i would say besides the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit being speaking in tongues that their views are pretty solid. now for those who do not hold to that belief i would challenge you to find just one place in scripture where people were baptized in the Holy Spirit without speaking in tongues. now as to tongues, many who do not speak in tongues have little understanding of what it actually is. it is God's Spirit speaking through you which passes your understanding. we all need that because none of us know how to pray as we should. i was a member of the Nazarene church at the age of 21 fresh out of Vietnam .i got saved in that church by Gods Holy Spirit .For about a month i had been in prayer to receive the Holy Spirit and one night alone in my room God came and sealed me in the name of Jesus Christ across my forehead .I told the pastor and he said that was the gift of the Holy Spirit .I did not speak in tongues and had full control even though the Spirit indwelled me .thats when i knew that the Spirit of God is meek and humble and will not force a person to do anything .I heard angels singing in a unknown language and thats the night i got truly saved
When I was getting baptized I asked a brother would he say in the name of Jesus the Nazarene. This was not a Nazarene church or anything like that, just a baptism in sea. Do you attend a church now and if so which one?

I actually found this video due to my father who believed in Nazarene Christianity on the last years of his life. He died when I was eight and throughout my life I’ve always tried to learn more about his beliefs as he was incredibly incredibly wise and well read on theology. He was in Vietnam as well and became much stronger in his faith after what he witnessed.
John Wesley was focused on rectifying two weaknesses he saw within the Church of England: lack of personal conversion and commitment to living a disciple's life.
Those are still challenges for every denomination.
"Personal conversion" has left millions of professings Christians in despair over their salvation based on whether they "feel it" or not.
Out of all the heretics of American/British Christianity, John Wesley has probably caused the most destruction.

@@richardjones6024 Imagine telling your kids that they can't be actual Christians until they have an arbitrary conversion experience that nobody seems able to clearly define except those who claim it results in speaking gibberish, and then wondering why so many church kids secretly become atheist in their preteens and then leave the church visibly by college.
That's where "personal conversion" theology has gotten us. Especially when paired with the false doctrine of "age of accountability", because if a kid passes that magical age without feeling like they've had a conversion experience then they're left to believe they've apostisized.

I'm not a member in the Nazarene church. But I learned the gist of Wesley's theology from the scholars of the Nazarene Church. The one who influenced me profoundly was Dr. Kenneth Grider whose insights into the doctrines of God, atonement, predestination, and holiness were so valuable to me. When I was a kid attending a Nazarene church, drinking alcohol, dancing, or attending a party or going to the movie theater was a no no! Super strict. And if a women walked in dressing kind of scandalous, other women would approach her and ask her to cover up or sometime they would lend her a more appropriate word robe to wear.

Fourth generation Nazarene here - These are still our beliefs and are addressed more in private than in public. Many of the “old time” beliefs such as no movies, no jewelry (men and women), women can’t cut/color hair or wearing pants, men to wear only Blue/Black/Tan suits and no facial hair/long hair and etc. were all man made (legalism). And are no longer practiced.
In the 6+ decades that I have been in the COTN, many things have changed. The music is different, the style of service is not as formal (depending on each individual church). As Nazarene pastor’s wife once said, “The church is still teaching the love of Christ but is presenting it in a different way”.
I am a Nazarene. Have been for the last 56 years. It is a holiness church. I have seen a prostitute walk in on a Sunday morning watched the church welcome her with open arms. 2 weeks after first coming she was born again. The church helped her get clean and rebuild her life. She is a lay minister with a dynamic ministry helping others get out of that lifestyle.
Yes the church holds us to higher standard just in as God does. We are in the world but not of it. That being said the church of the Nazarene is a missionary church.we love and wish to save the souls of the lost.

A very concise and accurate definition of who I learned to be in the Church of the Nazarene. I really appreciate how quickly and clearly you expressed our traditional viewpoints. However, the manual does not reflect the whole story. A new movement toward "feeling" the Spirit, "listening" for the voice of God (a real voice), and repetitive (contemplative) meditations, is being taught in most of their higher learning institutions. We only found one that is avoiding, instead of teaching, "Spiritual Formation" classes, which are based on New Age practices dressed up in Christian lingo. After 35 years, we are currently distancing ourselves from some of the results of this teaching as old school pastors are retiring and younger pastors coming in, more concerned about numbers and what the "spirit" is telling them, than what the Bible says in black and white. We fear for our Brothers and Sisters who are in danger of opening up to things they do not recognise as dangerous.
You are right. The CotN has many new issues that are strange. I counselled my kids to not attend any Nazarene college, although our eldest daughter attended Olivet for a semester (we're from Arizona) and it seemed to be one of the most conservative and traditional of the colleges. I plan to attend the next General Assembly (if we ever have another one!) and find out more of what's going on. My wife and I have been troubled for awhile, but our particular Church Family is wonderful and so...we wait.
@burningfeet 53 Why are you laughing at me? I've been a member of the cotn for 35 years and am happy there. i just don't agree with some of their theology. i guess i am not a "purist" nazarene no. i love my Church family more than i disagree with some of the cotn errors.
I attended Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in the late 90's. Even back then there was a definite problem with professors teaching their own doctrine and ideas instead of what they had contractually agreed to by taking a job at a Nazarene University. Unfortunately, these changes almost always move in the direction of erosion, often times with the naïve goal of attracting more students. Last year the President of NNU sent out an email siding with the radical left, stating that our nation is fraught with systemic racism. At this point I don't view NNU as a Nazarene institution anymore and I would strongly urge students to avoid it.

The main merger took place in the (then) small town of Pilot Point, Texas (it is quickly becoming another DFW suburb). There is a plaque at the local Nazarene church commemorating the event.

I grew up in a Nazarene church in Southern California.
Another note. Many Nazarenes would say we do not believe you “lose” your salvation. As if, salvation is a “thing.” Rather, it is a state of relationship; therefore, we would say: an individual can willfully and purposefully abandon the faith. Not “lose” but abandon the faith. That makes it seems like if salvation is a thing like a “toy”, I lose the toy, and “oh my I can never find it.” That is incorrect. We believe an individual can apostatize and/or make a willful choose to abandon the faith. What it comes down is: do we lose our ability to choose? We say no, even after salvation, we do not loose free will. If God is love, He truly gives choice because love without choice renders meaningless. If God is love and takes away your ability to choose, is he really a loving God? This is why we believe a person never loses his ability to choose and therefore can willfully and purposefully abandon the faith. I understand I used a theological argument and some might ask, give me biblical evidence. While there are many, I concentrated my undergraduate paper on Timothy. Review clearly 1 Timothy and Paul says some have wandered from the faith because money. In addition, he talks about some that abandoned the faith. Among others that we can use.

John Wesley was never a son because in order to be born again, a person must put all their faith in the Gospel of Jesus. A person can be adopted into the family and have a good relationship or a bad relationship with the father. Rewards/blessing come through obedience. Chastening comes from disobedience. Both obedient and disobedient children of God go to heaven. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hand of the living God.

One, we are The Church “of the Nazarene,” who is the Nazarene? It is Jesus the Nazarene. We are not The Church of John Wesley. While our doctrinal heritage is Wesleyan, we are clear whose church is our church. Just like we all speak English and are Americans. Not all have the same heritage. I am of Guatemalan heritage, but consider myself an American as I have lived all my life except for 5 years here. I am sure there are some that are of African, Asian, European heritage. There is one thing that unites us, no matter the doctrinal heritage and it is Jesus, what he did in the cross and his resurrection.
Two, you said, “We are save by placing our trust in the ‘gospel’ of Jesus.” Are we saved by what we believe, or in WHOM we believe? We are saved in whom we believe. “Gospel” simply means “good news.” The news itself does not do anything. It is if we place our faith in Jesus in what he did in the cross and his resurrection that saves us. Trust in Jesus, a person saves us; trust in an “idea” like a good news does not saves us.
Three, honestly this whole eternal security vs. present day security is a good “spirited” discussion we can have among brethren, BUT we should NEVER divide over it. There is SO MUCH more that unites us as believers. One of my best friends is an Independent Baptist Brother. We know that there is so much more that unites us, and we are respectful of our different doctrinal heritages.
What would if look like if we are more respectful towards each other, and work on things that unite us?

I was raised Nazarene, & I think you described our view of salvation very well. Salvation is a relationship of submission to the will of God. Salvation is not an event. To the Nazarene, salvation (relationship) has a beginning & must be maintained (continued submission to the will of God). It is not a stand alone event (accepted Jesus) that "saves" you regardless your conduct/values/beliefs/actions over the subsequent years. The parable of the sower is the perfect nuanced description of the Nazarene doctrine.

This is a really good video. It is more accurate than most from outside of the denomination and better than several from inside the denomination! I would make three (or really 2 1/2) corrections:
First (the 1/2 one), you stated that Nazarenes believe in biblical inerrancy. However, ours is a pneumatological inerrancy rather than the kind of inerrancy held by those in the Fundamentalist camp. - Since you actually read the Article of Faith that explained this, I considered it only a 1/2 correction. :)
Second, concerning homosexuality, the church makes a distinction between orientation and action. So, it is more accurate to say that we view homosexual activity as sinful.
Finally, and most importantly, we ordain elders and deacons. The language that you quoted that we hold to only one preaching order is in reference to the nature of the two orders. In the Church of the Nazarene, if one professes a specific call to preach, they will be ordained as an elder. If the call to ministry does not include the call to preach, they would be ordained as a deacon.

However, in general, "orientation," "temptation," concepts that lead to a choice to act or not act are not, in themselves, viewed as "choice." How we do respond to such is a choice. - I hope that at least helps to clarify what might be considered "a choice," even if it doesn't specifically deal with the question of "a medical condition."
@@a.kamileon this is interesting. I am a current student at Nazarene Theological Seminary and a Latino Nazarene Pastor. I think The COTN is also divided among the races in this subject matter. Most all Latino Nazarene will say it is a choice as with any sin. We choice to sin. There is a fundamental Nazarene wing among Latinos that is unspoken. There are some younger White Nazarenes that seem to be a bit ambiguous, has been my experience at NTS. Some thoughts. I don’t consider myself as fundamental as other Nazarene of Latino heritage. But I do view as sin. As well as any sexual activity outside of marriage whether heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual.
I guess I'll say that the church I've been attending for the last couple months has been very welcoming and open to all. There's room for interpretation in a lot of what was said. I'm sure there are cult like churches of this kind but I don't believe the one I'm attending is one of them. Great info though. Thank you

I went to a nazarene church today. The pastor said you have to repent you're sins but only to God. Alone is acceptable.. He wants you to do more but was clear that is all that is required.

Just so nobody gets overwhelmed with the claim that Nazarene is the largest WESLEYAN-HOLINESS denomination, let's get some perspective. The two original Orthodox Churches (Roman Catholicism and Greek Orthodoxy) together represent about 86% of Christianity in the world. The whole Wesleyan-Holiness movement represents something like .06%
There is a huge difference between the beliefs, structure and etc. of the Orthodox Church and the Church of the Nazarene and "sister" Wesleyan Holiness denominations such as Free Methodist, Wesleyan, Church of God (Anderson), Churches of Christ in Christian Union, Salvation Army Citadels other independent churches.

I attended a Nazarene Church in High School -- over 50 years ago. I recently attended that same church. The Churches have aged -- much like me. I was the guy playing guitar 50+ years ago -- and now the guys playing guitar are my age, today. There are fewer 20-somethings and 30-something, and 40-somethings, and fewer children, too. They appear to have adopted "anointing with oil" as a mild form of faith healing -- which I did not see when I attended, before 1971. Good People, but unwilling to explore Truth. Then again, they have explored scientific explanations since then, in spite of being so against anything other than a strict 6 literal days of creation back then.

They don’t reject the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. You just have different terminology. Most likely you are from a church which requires the gift of tongues as evidence before believing that someone has been filled with the Holy Spirit. Just because God worked that way a few times in the past, does not mean He is required to always work that way, everywhere and at all times forever.
The Church of the Nazarene uses this Terminology for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: the Filling of the Holy Spirit, the Second work of Grace, and Entire Sanctification. This baptism comes when you feel the conviction to give your entire life and consecrate it for the service and use by God, and you ask the Lord to fill you up with his Holy Spirit to empower you for service. When the Holy Spirit fills you, the Holy Spirit comes to make you holy, to purify your heart, so that you learn to love what God loves and hate the things that lead to sin and death. This empowering grace gives victory over sin and helps transform us into the image of Jesus.
Romans 8.28 has often been a favorite inspiring verse to me, but recently the Lord showed me verse 29 is also important, it is God’s will that we be transformed into the image of Jesus, and show the world His love!
Also, our focus should not be on what gifts God gives us. We should not be demanding that we must speak in tongues! Rather we should be examining our heart to be sure we have truly repented, completely yielded our whole life to God‘s purposes and truly died to our own will. If we are still walking by sight or feelings or any of our other senses, then it might make sense that the Lord doesn’t fill us with his Holy Spirit yet.
But neither should a church forbid speaking in tongues, as the scripture says Do not to forbid speaking in tongues! But in a worship service, it can add much confusion. We should follow Paul’s advice in that area. And concerning what gift God gives us, as his children, our attitude should be gratitude for whatever He chooses to give, and acknowledging that He certainly knows what is best; rather than demanding He gives us specific gifts. Being demanding is another case of not yielding to God’s will.
Another wrong teaching is that being filled with the Holy Spirit is only a one time thing. Where scripture says to be filled with the Spirit, it is a continual and repetitive verb form. In English it might be better rendered as “Be being filled!” This is something we need to be empowered with every day, so we can walk in the spirit rather than walk in the flesh, so that we can be full of God’s strength and power, so that we will have the fruits of the Spirit abundant in our life- so that we will have as much love and joy and peace and patience and kindness etc. as we need to meet the needs of people around us. The filling with the Holy Spirit is not for just or primarily for our own benefit; it is to empower us for service, it is to help us show the world what Jesus is like, to give us a victory over sin, to give us fullness of joy so that we have plenty to share.
No, I am not a member of the Church of the Nazarene. I do have friends who are and relatives who attend, and I did attend the university of a very closely related denomination which is also under the Wesleyan Holiness umbrella.

I was a member of the Nazarene denomination before I left Christianity, this video is pretty accurate about the things I used to believe, and explains why so few Nazarenes proselytize to apostates because we are hopelessly and eternally lost.

@@mattfioretti8494 I don't mind! Thanks for asking! TLDR I left because I realized the reasons I had for believing were insufficient to warrant belief. But to be more specific, no matter how much I tried to love Jesus, I found it became impossible for me to maintain a relationship with someone who never reciprocated, never gave me any reason to believe they loved me back. It was an abusive, unhealthy relationship where I was like a stalker and Yahweh was like a neglectful father who went out for cigarettes before I was born and never returned.
I didn't know it for a long time but this is commonly known as the problem of divine hiddenness, basically meaning the Abrahamic god behaves/functions identical to a god that doesn't exist. I realized that men and women created many gods in their own image, not the other way around.

I go to a Wesleyan church. Please talk about the history of the Wesleyan denomination (the merger of the Pilgrim Holiness Church and Wesleyan-Methodist Church):
Its the only denomination I'm truly familiar and comfortable with. Never been too big of a fan of Baptists or the Assemblies of God.
My wife and I recently left the CotN (a long, painful story) for a Wesleyan Church. Doctrinally very close, though the Wesleyan Church has far fewer congregations. If I have my history correct, the Wesleyans merged with the Pilgrim Holiness Church in 1968. There are still a few PH churches in the upstate New York to Western NC corridor, though some of them go by Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist. Major differences center around external expressions of holiness: attire, hair length, no wedding bands, etc
Fascinated with the ways belief subdivides itself. My own feelings about what Jesus brings - present tense - reminds me of something Granddaddy said once: 'Jesus is the bird and most churches are cages.'
Although I don't recommend having a near death experience, my own was life-changing. It's very difficult not to judge and even hate at times, but there's no point in those things. Hence, I ask for God's help on a daily basis - and more frequently. Would that I could see Christ in the face of all people. Blessings to everyone. As a retired minister I look at sanctification as an ongoing process. I don't think that sanctification can be completed on this side of the Grave it is and every day Journey that we as Christians must take towards becoming the Christians the followers of Jesus that Jesus is wanting us to be. These are my beliefs please don't judge me because of them.
Jesus will judge us when we die, and those already sanctified will be perfected as he covers past sins at baptism into his church, Jesus does not 'want' we are obliged.

@olivianantwick7603. I left the Nazarene Church for a couple reasons. #1 I questioned the “ entire sanctification” belief. Nobody can live a sin free life. We all fall short. #2 growing up, there were too many “we dont’s” and My boys needed to be in a thriving youth group so we changed denominations to an American Baptist church which was the best choice we ever made. As a youth, I remember no jewelry, shorts,sleeveless tops, movies,school dances,make-up, and mixed “ bathing”(swimming) My sons are christians but go to the church of their choice.
@@cathyblankenship5824 I'm afraid anyone following 'Christianity" is following a creedish cult, not the religion of Abraham. In the OT you will find grace was merited, and it is misreading of verses like Romans 11:6 that have diluted grace to anything we like. We must be baptised from extensive teaching of the OT, and live under grace to be sanctified.
I do have alot to say and have a Ytube video series called 'Myths in so-called Christianity', the rules for sanctification are in Romans the gospel of salvation, there are moral obligations but not cultural ones.
You might find my videos appealing as they are about ecumenism in the widest sense as there is only one religion from Abraham, but in the world there are claims by Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Mostly I expose untruths in commonly held doctrines, they are now Myths, as I let Paul explain Romans for himself.
It's worth mentioning that over the past 30-40 years our colleges have started teaching that we do not believe in the doctrine of inerrancy. It's almost universally accepted these days by the educational elite that the doctrine of inerrancy is a fundamentalist position and they reject it entirely. They claim that we only believe the bible inerrantly reveals "all things necessary for salvation". In other words, the bible is inerrant in it's revelation of all things necessary for salvation but in other areas there are errors. I have had many professors and pastors explicitly state that the bible merely an inspired history book of how God has revealed himself to mankind rather that the bible itself being God's revelation. All this is to say if you ask anyone educated or involved in teaching at our universities over the last few decades they will deny the traditional view of inerrancy.
This view is not widely held at the local church level by the lay person and older pastors or pastors that came from other Wesleyan denominations like the Wesleyan Church or Free Methodists. They will also claim (wrongly) that this has always been the position of our church because that's what they've been taught. Today, if you express a belief in inerrancy you will be mocked and ridiculed.
I can affirm this. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2020 and my Old Testament professor seemed to suggest this way of thinking of the Bible. I don't know if he felt this way about the New Testament too. I believe he was a Nazarene pastor. I didn't agree with that stance
@@dee_7942 if you're interested the best I can tell this thinking started with an article titled "The Leavening of the Church" by J. Edwin Orr. In the article, Orr argued that the church had become fundamentalist in the early 20th century as a reaction to the liberal theology that was popular at the time. He argued that the church's leaders, such as Phineas Bresee and Albert Benjamin Simpson, were influenced by the fundamentalist movement, and that they adopted some of its key beliefs, such as the inerrancy of Scripture and the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. Many other church leaders believed in the inerrancy of scripture. To make things even more ridiculous they claim the doctrine of inerrancy, not just fundamentalism in general, is a completely new idea. They want us to believe no Christians through history believed in the inerrancy of scripture the way fundamentalists do today.

The word "pentecostal" changed in meaning. A couple denominations that merged into the Nazarenes had the word Pentecostal in their name but didn't affirm theologically what that implies today.
When the denomination was founded in 1908, it was originally called the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. However, in 1919, it dropped "Pentecostal" from its name in order to disassociate itself from the Pentecostal movement, which by then had given the term a different meaning.

This is the problem with many denominations: They confuse what are actually two separate and distinct manifestations subsequent to salvation/justification. Receiving instantaneously the fully ripe Fruit of the S(s)pirit [of Holy Love] is one additional blessing, and the charismata Baptizing (n.) of the Holy Ghost upon us is also a separate blessing.

So.am I tight in saying that the church does not believe in speaking in tongues as evidence of infilling of the Holy Spirit. I really want to know as I'm thinking of attending their university in Manchester but don't want to study in a place where there is a conflict of beliefs.
The Nazarene Church does not embrace speaking in tongues to my knowledge.
Hey lovejesus1202012 so currently in the Church of the Nazarene there is actually more of an openness to the gift of speaking in tounges than in the previous generations in fact the 1974 General Convention ruling is not the current attitude of many in the denomination. There are even Nazarene Pastors such as myself who do believe in and practice speaking in tounges but where we would still differ from Pentecostals would be that we believe the gift of tounges is a gift of the spirit but not the evidence of being filled by the spirit. The evidence of that is maturing in love.
There’s one of these in my hometown of Duncan, British Columbia.
In September, 1986 in the town of Medicine Hat, Alberta a 19 year old girl named Melody Joy Reigel, told her church lady friends that she was not going to follow God. She was an adopted girl with two uncles that were ministers in the Nazarene church. She told her girl friends that she did not want God anymore and was going to live as she pleased. Nine days later she was dead. She took a bus to Edmonton and became a prostitute. A john strangled her to death at the Kingsway Motel. Her killer has never been found. For her family there was no closure. Also since they believe that a person can lose their salvation they would have to believe that she went to Hell. That is one of the saddest story's that I know about.
How does the COTN consider Scripture inspired "pneumatologically inerrant" but end up polarized against speaking and praying in tongues? Also, what is their position on deliverance and healing? Will they disfellowship you for casting out demons and laying on hands, or having experienced those?
My guess is that too often in the past the praying in tongues was forced upon people rather than first the Baptizing (n.) of the Holy Ghost upon them in and of itself, i.e. putting the cart before the horse--or worse still, the person not being first genuinely reborn. If and when true, as it often is, this gives occasion to false tongues and emotional excesses rather than the genuine manifestation. Hence, a heavy-handed doctrine of restraint. Pride and ego, really, not wanting as a whole to appear foolish before the world.
...then, too, if a particular pastor has not [hopefully just] yet received the subsequent-to-justification blessing of either the fullness of Holy/Agape' Love and/or the charismata blessing, they will not want to preach and teach it. So to eliminate it from the doctrine of the denomination offers them solace and acceptance.

I was brought up in The Church of the Nazarene but as an adult became Episcopalian.
This is very different from what I recall from my experience with CotN in the early '80s. One thing that rang true was the holiness bit. It was an incredibly destructive belief to the life of the congregation. Instead of grace and support, a congregant's sin lead to judgement, prayer (aka gossip) and various forms of shunning. That, in turn, led to people hiding their sin rather than confessing and seeking help, prayer and guidance. Even within holiness (which I do not and never did subscribe to) I can imagine that there can be mercy out of a desire to guide a fallen person back to grace. But I have found responses to this doctrine to rarely lead to such love. As for not having a particular eschatological view, every Nazarene I knew at the time was a premillennial dispensationalist. And this supposed prohibition of Pentecostalism is a complete surprise. I recall speaking in tongues being designated as a sign that one was still holy or, that is, sinless. Anyhow, it's too bad that the CotN manual spends all that time on how to think about all of the religio-political hot topics rather than how to christlike in dealing with one another's sin.
Some years back I represented Nazarene pastor in an IRS audit. As I recall the conversation went like this:
IRS: What is this Nazreen church?
ME: Not entirely sure, but believe is came out of holiness movement.
IRS: What's that?
ME: As I understand it, this came out of the Wesleyan movement.
IRS: What's that?
ME: Well, the movement which came out of the work of Charles & John Wesley.
IRS: Who are they and how can we contact them?
ME: My understanding is they've died.

Similar, i have some reformed tendencies but grew up in a nazarene church, in practices that whole argument was ignored and i didnt know about it until after taking an apologetics class.
The only thing i disagree is the Armenian, but it was always vague and took me an hour to find anything saying Nazarene are Armenian. Nothing seems to have changed bc free will or predestination has never been a main focus of the church rather the missions and holiness aspects of it

Jesus said He would build His church, did He not? He did build it and He is the only Head of it. You can find it; it is around today. Hint: It does not make doctrine on its own authority. All of its doctrine has already been delivered by the Holy Spirit and written down in our scriptures.

It doesn't matter what sign is on the building, as long as the sign declares that the people who meet there belong to the church that Christ built. The people inside will believe and worship as they are taught in the New testament. They certainly will not join up with any one of the hundreds of man made denominations. Christ didn't build any of them. He had already built His church before they were made.

Egalitarian with a slight tinge of complementarianism. The relationship should be egalitarian, but the husband still functions as head of house.

It depends entirely on the congregation and pastor. The issue is most likely to be avoided altogether. We are more egalitarian officially, but many individuals are more complimentarian.

The nazarene church tried taking out revelation, (not true revelation early church added it and martin luther wanted to take out like 7 books already decided and made canon) i am a bit confused what the early church and the canon has to do with the church of the nazarene adding books that the original church did not except. But all fundamentalists are cults and not christian at all, and that poor caller with his issue growing up and not letting him go to his HS senior dance. Thats a reflection on church of the nazarene and not on christianity as a whole.

I believe in more than 66 books (Jubilee's, Enoch... )... and will never put my faith in governments/institutions with how they changed the names over the past from Paleo Hebrew/Aramaic to other names, dates, times!... Natsarim were true first follower's who practiced Jewish traditions and customs... the feasts, the dates, and much more! The very truth is out there and to really know the Father is to understand his word and the truth of how everything came into being, including what was changed/translated over time! Lord is just another word for Master/Baal, so I will abstain from using such a word!... We have to retrain our minds to understand what it truly means to love our Father Yahuah! While this did used to be the stance of the Church of the Nazarene this isn't really necessarily so anymore many in the denomination do believe in the Biblical speaking in tounges experience but it's a git of the spirit not the evidence of being indwelled by the Spirit.
Sadly the Church of the Nazarene seems to be slowly dying from what I’ve heard from friends still in it. Either to the rot of theological Liberalism or Hyper-Charismania.

I was raised Southeren Baptist. Was save and Baptized, in pentecostal. I was always told. The denomination, doesn't tell you, if God, is in the building.
Being a denomination is simply an entity formally stating their beliefs, and providing a hierarchy which is necessary of all social structures.
Even a nondenominational church is a denomination onto themselves, the leader(s) personally believing certain doctrines and conveying such.
Conversely, when someone attends a particular church, they most often want to know what that fellowship doctrinally believes, as most people want to be at least mostly in agreement with such--though this is less necessary for some as seems to also be your position and is mine as well.

@@roxane1889 My experience in the church is unique as a "pastors kid". The cult like aspect was about control, vailed in what their doctrine is called holiness. No movies, dancing, drinking, smoking. I had to turn down a date to prom because if I attended it would hurt my "witness.".

as a lad i went to a nazarene church. they made the (mistake) of having a full gospel preacher come for a service. well when one of the young girls got filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues it blew up in their face and caused a split in the church. my mom and a couple of her friends took their families and left to go to the church of the full gospel preacher.
that was many years ago and i have not been back to that church though i know Godly people that still go there. i would say besides the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit being speaking in tongues that their views are pretty solid. now for those who do not hold to that belief i would challenge you to find just one place in scripture where people were baptized in the Holy Spirit without speaking in tongues.
now as to tongues, many who do not speak in tongues have little understanding of what it actually is. it is God's Spirit speaking through you which passes your understanding. we all need that because none of us know how to pray as we should. Romans 8:26
