- Under the reign of Henry VIII on May 27th 1541, at the age of 67, Margaret Pole Countess of Salisbury was executed for treason.
As part of his ‘Random History’ series, Kevin Hicks explores how and why a frail old lady, Margaret Pole, was executed under the orders of King Henry VIII and explains how her death was, an especially horrific event as the execution went badly wrong.

Henry VIII has a lot to answer for on judgement day when he stands before the Lord.
Yeah but in Christianity henry the 8th repented in the end took confession before he died and repented its historical that he did, so the judgement he will be before will be the bema seat judgement where Christians will be judged to where there works will be judged as gold or ash, the gold will be reformed into a crown for the Christian and the ash well nothing, so every act the Christian has done was for nothing, so henry the 8th will probably be the least in the kingdom of heaven or close to the least, most of his works will be turned into ash but his sins were covered by Jesus, so he won't be judged for them, that is Christianity in a nutshell

You've got some fantastic videos up. My wife loves this part of history, can't wait to show her your channel.
Cheers Andrew, thanks for the visit, I hope your wife enjoys it too 👍🏻
Hi Kevin, I was a European history major in college; now I’ve been enjoying listening to your videos while at work. Please keep up the good work!
My commencement address speaker began with the line, “in the words of Henry VIII : ‘I won’t keep you long’.”
LOL, that's a good one Roy 👍🏻. Thanks for watching.
I am aware of the execution of Margaret Pole and of course the end of a couple of marriages by beheading (Henry’s version of a separation) but I was shocked to hear that 70,000 others were executed by Henry during his reign. The more I watch your channel the more I realize how ignorant I am. Thank you for the enlightenment and for helping me become a little less stupid! My background is in medicine but I love history, especially military history. Unfortunately the more I learn the more I realize how much I don’t know.
King Henry VIII suffered a head injury during a jousting tournament that I believe caused damage to the frontal lobe, an area of the brain that can affect changes in personality and mood (rage and anger in particular) I believe this incident changed Henry VIII and may partially explain his violent behavior. Or perhaps he was just an evil narcissistic ba$tard! Regardless, fascinating as always.
Take care,
Doc

The population of England was around 2, 750,000 in 1500. So 70,000 killed would be around 2.5 % of the population. That is a lot.

They also arrested her other son and her only Grandchild. All of whom were executed by good old Henry's orders.

Her deat can't be justified, however explaining it off as "a need for space", and a her being a "frail old lady," do her a disservice.
For one, her family had a strong claim to the throne, and while Henry VIII held it, he knew based on 16 years worth of history at the time, that was tenuous at best. Her son reginald was also held in very high regard by Catholics who were still annoyed at Henry over the whole "breaking with Rome" thing. While many have written Margaret off as a meaningless old lady, she held a lot of sway. She was a threat to Henry.
As for who ordered her execution. cromwell, the weasley little toad probably had more to do with getting the death warrant than anyone else. So knowing that his execution was just as messy when his time comes has a little bit of poetic justice to it.
Great comment, thanks 👍🏻

Henry 8th was a monster. He wanted a son so much he butchered and divorced his wives. I think it's karma that his daughter Elizabeth I succeeded him. She was a truly exceptional Queen. Her mother Anne Boleyn did give him an heir. The Elizabethan age gave the world Shakespeare and a monarch who was probably the greatest English ruler.
When discussing history we sometimes forget these were real human beings. Thanks for bringing that out. Sad that woman was probably forgotten in the tower until her cell was needed. And that poor kid or young adult. Can you imagine the nightmares he had?
Oh, he probably reincarnated as a Protestant under Bloody Mary and paid the price.
Never knew about this, what a terrible death. Channel has become one of my favorites as soon as I found it. Thank you for the great content.
Such a sad tale and horrific way to die, the pain the poor woman must have been in for the first few blows.
Well, thanks. Watching Laura Carmichael's wonderful performance as Margaret Pole in The Spanish Princess and had to know what really happened to her. Ghastly. The woman appears to have been a person of integrity, courage and compassion. Based entirely on his actions as recorded in history, Henry the VIII was a monster. In France the executioner was a respected and feared individual in the city, BUT he had the obligation to provide a death to the masses gathered for a beheading therefore they were trained and took great care of their "material and instruments" because if he couldn't severe a head in less than 3 blows the people gathered around for the spectacle were in their right to demand his head to roll instead. It didn't happen often but there were a few cases.
Thanks for your comment Odeon, I'll remember that for the future. In England, executioners weren't so valued, one might have been a butcher or slaughter man full time with a beheading on the side 👍🏻

Two surviving reports of her death, both are awful and both say 10 to 11 blows to actually behead and kill her. I’ve thought about time travel and if we ever could how we should go back and humble some of these brutal tyrants in the past Henry VIII is most definitely on that list!

For the second time now, you're reminding us that these were real people, that these aren't just stories to say "Wow, cool!" to. This was real life violence and injustice, and eleven swings to get the job done, oh my gosh. Picturing that as an actual scene taking place, the sounds, the horror, the fear you'd be able to sense in the woman... Five failed tries, surely the sixth will do it? No. Seven? Eight? All the while, the woman screaming and begging, eventually (and mercifully!) ending her life. It really isn't a "Wow, cool" situation at all.

I always like to put these things in context. I wonder how many were executed by the kings of France, Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, etc around the same time? And what about the current rate of executions by beheading in Saudi Arabia? It is going thru the roof!
You can be sure that the religious wars in Europe saw large numbers of executed people, there were also sieges earlier on that led to everyone being killed. One of the most bloodthirsty periods was the Albigensian crusade in Southern France where at least 200,000 people were killed, some claim up to a million and most of those were French civilians.
This is why the guillotine was seen as an humane execution instrument when introduced.
I'm denouncing this for graphic imagery, i imagined all vividly in my head in disgusting detais.
Just kidding. I loved it
Hahaha, you had me there ...... 👍🏻
Hi Kev, I was told a story back in school History that at an execution (I’m going to hesitate a guess at Anne Boleyn) she was praying before the chop, and upon the executioner lifting up the head her lips were still said to be moving and eyes looking around 👀 Does this ring any bells with you? Enjoying the uploads 👍🏻
Yes Matt, absolutely spot on. Anne is in editing at the moment ;-)
that is extremely creepy but i wonder if the head is still conscious or just muscle movement due of the nerves before the chop. Terrifying to think about it

@@joshuajoaquin5099 . I won’t say it’s impossible, but i do believe it highly unlikely that a person can take that kind of trauma and blood loss and remain conscious and even less likely that they would remain fit enough to recite preyers or poetry or even curse they’re killer. That would be like having your intestines pulled out and placed in a brazier and still being able to yell out FREEDOM without showing any sign of pain.
@@python27au Braveheart, when you really get right down to it, is such a bad film.
Wasnt she executed partly for being devout Catholic, partly for being loyal to Catherine of Aragorn and Mary, but mostly because she had a better claim to the throne than Henry djd?
Henry was such a piece of crap, which I think is the technical term. He certainly caused far less suffering overall than kings like Edward I or III because the British Isles only saw a few battles and skirmishes during his reign and he didn't drag England into a Hundred Year's War that would cost endless blood and treasure in France and England alike.
But Henry was a terrible ruler as ruling goes, surely one of the worst of the absolute monarchs. For all the reasons we know, such as wretched scenes like this.
Horrific, glad I missed living in those days. Thanks as always for a fascinating, interesting and informative video

I've heard this story many times, absolutely horrifying, the King was despicable. 🍁😊🐘🇨🇦
There's a horrifically gruesome part in one of the many films about Elizabeth I where I think it's Mary Queen of Scots is being beheaded and they use CGI to show the axe partly severing her head and her gurgling and gasping - that, for me showed the horror of it. It's on RUclips somewhere if anybody's particularly interested in looking at it.
🥺
If there is any lasting good that came from Henry VIII's reign it was purely by accident. The man, as much as I have read of him, possessed a brutal, ugly soul. He reigned by fear.
An issue that may have been of import is that there is a legitimacy problem with Henry's line - a bastard appears to have ascended to the throne - there were rumours and apparently recently found evidence supporting that premise. Time Team did an episode on it, they found an older gentleman living in Australia that is a Plantagenet descended - their research supports that he is the legitimate king of Great Britain. Henry VIII certainly was aware of the weakness in his line and likely considered the Plantagenets to be a threat to his rule. This, and the activities of Margaret Pole's son, doomed her to death by a murderous king.
"Henry VIII", "anglicanism" and "XVIth century" are always codewords for something extremely cruel for no reason at all.
Thats a nice axe in the background:) is it made for fighting? If yes what smith made it?
My euro hist teacher in high school would say executioners were probably always hungover as well. I mean, your job is homicide and that shouldnt sit right with anyone.
I knew what a mess he did of the job on poor Margaret. Even experienced executioners were naturally nervous cutting the heads off nobles, they always carried a small sharp knife for completing the execution if the pole ax had not completed the beheading , to use someone so young and inexperienced is a recipe for mucking up the job. It may have been some strange privilege reserved for nobles and royalty to be executed this way but in the case of Margaret Pole, I believe had she been hanged (like a common criminal) it would have been a much quicker and less painful death.
PS, I don’t believe for a second someone like Margaret Pole would ever try to run off, talk about adding insult to injury! Shameful…
I find it extremely odd when an Englishman talks of the brutality in his country throughout the past, yet they're still ruled by the descendants of those people. Descendants who are some of the most powerful richest people on the planet yet their jobs are basically redundant in this day and age. That's why I'm 🎶 "Proud to be an American" 🎶
🤘🥲
70,000 people executed during Henry the 8th(I am,I am.) Did this bloke actually do anything good other than tennis.
The story behind why Henry VIII was so threatened by Margaret Pole is very interesting. I believe she was related to Henry (his mother's cousin, if I recall correctly).
I don't believe the story about the Countess jumping up after the first blow and running away from the axeman. I think a strong, young and fit individual would have trouble getting up after being hit in the shoulder with an axe, nevermind a frail woman at the age of 67.
Also, apparently the following was carved into the walls of her cell but has never been conclusively proven to have been done by her:
"For traitors on the block should die;
I am no traitor, no, not I!
My faithfulness stands fast and so,
Towards the block I shall not go!
Nor make one step, as you shall see;
Christ in Thy Mercy, save Thou me!"

I believe I said 70,000, but yes, it's not all doom & gloom here on the channel 😜
My mum's around the same age, just the thought alone of her being in prison is too painful to even contemplate
If there is a special place in hell for Kings, old Henry is surely there.
70,000 when the population was below 4,000,000 is roughly 1 in 57 people were executed. Having had a Catholic education we were taught that Henry VIII was less than wonderful but we weren’t told he was this bad.
We also always assume that the axe is razor sharp and took the head off in a single sweep, causing a fast almost painless death. Is it true that later when hanging was the mode of execution, that if the hangman failed 3 times you were released as it was the will of God and thus you were deemed innocent? If so poor Margret was close to proving her innocence 4 fold.
Great comment, thanks Mark.

This is so much worse than the myth that she jumped up about her innocence. That has a slight comic effect, but the bungling of a poor young man with no experience and the slipshod way it was done. That and that idea that it was simply for bureaucratic purposes is even worse. Well.....Tudors and their executions.

One of the problems with using the English axe was it wasn’t well balanced and so easy to miss the right spot. Ann was ‘lucky’ enough to have had a skilled French swordsman as exicutioner.
Yes, it's interesting isn't it that there wasn't a standard executioners axe. One contemporary image shows an executioner using nothing more than a giant meat cleaver.

C. J Sansom's 'Shardlake' series of books are set in this period, and one of them talks about this execution, I think its in 'Sovereign' as I recall. A brutal period, and a brutal man in charge. 70,000 executions carried out, including of course the more famous ones such as Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard etc. Little wonder when Henry was on the lookout for a wife one of the ladies on the continent who was approached sent back a reply that said she would have considered the proposal had she had two heads, but as she only had one she had to decline the offer!!!
Haha, that's excellent, I love it!
The lady was Christina of Denmark (whose great-aunt just happened to be Catharine of Aragon, Henry's first wife). Sensible woman.
I really struggle with these execution accounts. Not the narrator’s fault, just how people were treated in those days. Just brutal
Front desk, "We have no rooms." "WAIT! " We just had a check out." That's one heck of a way to create a vacancy. A very sad event and horrific ending for that woman.
