4C Hair - Semi Freeform Kinky Afro Locs: Update

  • I had the best time in Jamaica. Beach sand in my locs wasn't an issue AT ALL. Other than that, my hair routine is the same. I wash it weekly with a clarifying shampoo and I use NO CONDITIONER and NO OILS EVER! Kinky locs are the easiest, softest, fluffiest hair to manage. Get some!

    You HAVE been such a role model! I cut my last set of locs off and started again on Jan 1, using your method: NO PRODUCTS. I wash weekly with African black soap, no conditioner. I get my hair wet every day in the shower: first hot, then cold. What has shocked me is that my own natural oils are indeed sufficient to keep my hair soft, just as you promised. I LOVE this set of locs, and owe much of this to you! ❤

    I found you in 2021, and you have been my absolute guru! My hair started off at ear length, now it reaches my back, the front of my head is various lengths, but it frames my face. I am so happy I went with your method. My scalp actually wouldn't allow me anything else. You are so awesome. Coolest RUclipsr I could have ever stumbled across! And yes, you have set a good example, I will continuously testify on your behalf!

    Started from the bottom now you’re there ! They grew so much and as yours grow I see mine grow as well it’s a wonderful process.
    I took the no oil thing seriously and I’m never going back to oil, yes sometimes I’m still brainwashed and I feel my air is dry, but as you said or Adette Bennington years ago it is ok that my air is dry and is looking dry, I noticed that it looks dry but it is soft and very light, I don’t have itching anymore on my scalp from oils clogging my scalp, my hair got thick and full looking, I don’t have the opportunity to wear my hair out a lot because of work but I really notice my hair is thriving from the low maintenance and growing and doing it’s own thing.
    All I do after a shampoo is spray my hair with aloe Vera juice, that’s it, and cover my hair at night with a satin bonnet because I love how my hair feel softer when I wake up, that’s it.
    Thank you for the inspiration my dear!
    ( writing my comment at the moment you speak about hair going dry very fast and girl this is true ! )

      @ingridfromtoronto  Год назад +4

      You are welcome! Good for you for embracing the dryness of your kinky hair. Don't be fooled by commercials or influencers who refer to it as 'moist' or needing any kind of moisture. It's not true. Afrolocs are best when dry. I hear you with wearing a satin bonnet too. I actually wore one at the hotel in and if I spend the night away from home I'll wear one too. It just seems appropriate then. Thank you for your comment and all the best!

      Yes! I thought I was losing it. I would only put a little oil on the edges, vit e and lavender and my scalp would itch like crazy. No oil, no itch! Whew, had to learn that one the hard way.

Your knowledge and advice have helped my hair so much, I'm eternally grateful that I found your videos early enough in my loc journey (about 4 months in) and stopped using all products and committed to weekly washing. I'm a yr in and am loving it. I could care less how long it gets and I'm 65. Im so glad you love your hair, I love mine too, so nice we can absolutely love our hair, its been something growing up with 4c but this is delightful! "Do what you wanted to do and still look good" Love it!
    This is definitely the best way for me, no twisting, no oil, wash 1x wkly, no conditioner. I use the lemon clarifying shampoo from whole foods or amazon or a dreadlock shampoo bar. I never wear a silk bonnet and I love to feel it like you Ingrid, it's fluffy and never smells.

    Your hair looks amazing. I have had locs in the past and started freeforming after the birth of my second child but ended up cutting off my hair due to post partum shedding. Now I am starting semi freeform locs again after keeping my hair short for 4 years. I bought Adette Wellington's book years back and it's such a gem. Thanks for sharing your personal journey and encouraging black and brown women to embrace their hair. We have so many of these labels 4a, 4b, 4c but when we can just come to love our African hair without assigning it any labels its so freeing. @Angela Elaine. I was told that my hair cannot free form because I have fine hair that’s straight on the crown of my head, and my texture in the back and the left side is curlier. I got to thinking🤔why is it that white people can free form lock their hair and I can’t? So, I decided a year ago to stop retwisting, and only wash with Dr. Bonners peppermint soap once a month or when I feel like it. I made a sage rinse out of fresh sage boiled in water strained it and made a rinse. I sprayed once a week with this rinse and water rinsed every other week. I donot use products on my hair. I am still amazed at my hair. They are free forming and thicken. I get so many compliments on my locs. So, your hair can free form. Leave it alone. Do not use products, just keep it clean and separated. If your hair grows away from your locs, just insert the grow away part into the closet loc, or just leave it alone and let it form another loc. I allowed mines in the top to do that so I don’t have any scalp showing. Try this and be patience, and don’t expect your locs to look like someone else’s locs. Your hair knows what to do. Just let it do it’s thang. ☺️

    • @ingridfromtoronto
      @ingridfromtoronto  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much sis.
      I hear you about being ‘stuck’ with twisting. Once you start, your locs take on the size of the twisted hair and it’s tough to start free forming b/c you’ll see the difference. The ends will look like how our permed hair looked when we all went natural. Remember those straggly bits? Another option is just start over.
      Feel free to ask your questions on this platform. It’s easier for me plus it’s helpful for other people who might have the same questions.

    • @ingridfromtoronto
      @ingridfromtoronto  Год назад +6

      @@rodalyndavid2622 Some of your hair will grow 'outside' the loc because remember, you've been designing it through twisting it all this time. It knows what shape suits you best but you would have to allow it to do what it wants. That's the main reason why some people start their locs over. At the end of the day, what's important is that you feel attractive to yourself.
      It might help to redefine what 'attractive' means for you. As my sister once said, 'you have to start seeing yourself with your African eyes.' Health and strength is always beautiful no matter what shape or package it comes in so I would start there. Also, I find that people tend to see themselves in others so, those women are only seeing their shadow in you. I wouldn't take it personal. All that matters is how you feel when you look at you and if it feels better to focus on the compliments you are getting, then do that until you don't care what people think. It's not necessary to brush locd kinky hair. It's easy enough to remove any little piece of fluff that might be sitting on the surface. Anyway, "rough" can be a fun look too.
