  • Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening Knowing when and how to harvest and dry your homegrown onions is important to ensure they store well and last through the winter months with no rot.
    Harvesting onions are easy but you should not just pull them from the soil, rather you should use a fork and pry them gently lifting the onion. All care should be taken to avoid straining the neck of the onion, if this is stretched too much it will cause damage to the bulb and it will rot during storing.
    Learning how to harvest onions ensures you can store them. Lay them on the ground for a couple of hours to allow them to dry off. Later you can peel back the onion skins to a complete unblemished or split skin, Don't worry about taking off multiple layers You need a complete skin to avoid any disease or fungus being able to set in during storage.
    Today I show you exactly how to harvest onions and dry your homegrown onions to get them ready. Learn how to store onions for the long winter months ahead. It doesn't matter if you have homegrown white onions red onions or even yellow onions they all harvested and dried the same way. In a later episode, I will teach you how to string up your onions in order to allow airflow and keep them fresh all winter long.
    Remember, you reap what you sow! and homegrown is best!

      This is a great video! Really informative! I'm growing onions that I found in my brothers old fridge 😂 supermarket bought onions that had sprouted alot! I decided to put them in the ground and they went! I think they are ready to harvest as they have bent over but I wasn't sure because there's still flowers on them. They've been like that for a few weeks now. Also It's really nice to hear a welsh accent! Shwmae from Carmarthenshire :)

    Hi Tony, I put in 100 Japanese onion sets last October and they look very well, hoping we get some warmer drier weather to finish them ready for lifting. I also put in another 100 white and just under 100 red sets back in the spring which should be ok. I like your method of drying with the mesh. I usually chance it and leave them on the ground for 2 days but i have been caught out. I have not seen your method of stringing yet. I usually have two 10 foot canes across the rafters in the garage. I hang each onion from this. It is hard work but it has worked and i have managed to keep onions from August right through to June, I lose the odd one. Another very watchable video.. Kes, Somerset

    Hi Tony. I have never grown onions before. But this year I did grow some shallots which are doing well. But I wanted to ask you....did you find any pros or cons to growing sets over seeds? I intend to grow onions for next year. I know you are going to do a follow up to do with stringing up but wondered how long your onions store for?
    Thanks
    Jo

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Jo. I still have onions that can be eaten from last years harvest. Ideally, you want to protect them so you have a constant supply. TBH as long as you buy heat treated sets you get decent onions, but I always prefer seed but not opposed to sets

      Ideally chris you want a complete skin left on the outside this will stop it rotting or the fungus getting into the onion. Id pull them off if not complete

    Hello Tony. After an extended hot, dry few weeks I lifted my onions and hung them on a drying rack just like you. After a few days we got some rain and its hardly stopped raining since, so the onions are now indoors stored in Ex Mushroom crates in my garage. I did this last year and lost no onions eating the last one 6 months after being put in store. I grew the onions from seed, the variety was Ailsa Craig. Your onions look sound, did you have many 'bolters'? and what variety are they? HGV

    Hi Tony, hope you can help? I lifted my japanese onions two weeks ago and they have been curing using more or less the same method you have. My problem is where to store. Usually i put them in the garage on strings hanging from the rafters. BUT it is far too warm in there even with all the windows open. I have my main crop sown in Spring almost ready so will have the same issue. Can it be too HOT for them to store? I have nowhere else under cover.

    I've noticed that nobody seems to cut the onion greens off or just shorter. Why is that? It seems that the necks would dry faster that way. Does it harm the onion?

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  6 лет назад +1

      Ron it would allow a fungal disease to enter right to the heart of the onion, this is why you leave them dry completely it seal the bulb off from the neck and because it dries fungal growth cannot enter as it cannot live in a dry area. Also use a sawsall to cut between raiator and steel flange and your done in seconds

    • @ronyerke9250
      @ronyerke9250 6 лет назад

      Oh. So the onions we buy in shop net bags were dried first before the leaves were cut off then? That makes sense. I guess I just learned another step in the process that gets onions on the table. Thank-you for taking the time to answer my question. 👍

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah they usually dried in massive kilns or on concrete slabs when its commercial to dry them quicker, they then run through a machine that removes the tops and throws them into net bags

  • @DebRoo11
    @DebRoo11 3 года назад

    I live in Ontario Canada and usually put sets in in the early spring. I have some onion seeds I'd like to try but hear conflicting info on when to plant them. Some say in the fall to overwinter for a late spring harvest and some say to plant the seedlings same time as you'd plant a set in early spring. I don't want to waste my seed. We do get harsh winters.

    • @simplifygardening

      Certain cover crops would have a drastic effect. Some a biofumigants and others although fix nitrogen something like field bean or hairy vetch would totally outgrow the onions and prevent growth.
