You have taken the time to show how to know when onions are ready. Thank you for being willing to share. The soft stems and why they are soft are very helpful.

Thanks, I am trying to learn about this! We will need a drying rack as you demonstrated. I planted some onions in the garden that sprouted. Most people would toss them in the trash but I planted them and they grew into a crop!

Nice onions, Ivan.👍Y'all got a lot of good eating with all the onions y'all are growing.
I do have a question...this year I grew onions from sets for the first time. They didn't bulb up...what did I do wrong?
Here we plant our onions in fall and they over winter or in February.
    Thanks for the added knowledge.🙂

Valorie - I am having the same problem with sets. Sets are great for growing in containers in small spaces apparently...but mine seem to be quite dry (although they thrived at first).

Not sure on that one unless they did not get enough water at some point as that will cause it
      Thank you Valorie

Glad i made this then Josie
Onion stems naturally fall over as they mature
this cuts off energy to the stem and the onion then begins to bulb up :)

This is very interesting - but could I ask how you know if your onions are ok or not while they are still growing? I planted onion sets in containers in late April and May. And they thrived at first. But now they are looking very dry with thin stems. I have protected them from the heat and increased watering during the heatwave. I also added some natural fertilizer as well as synthetic. Do you have any tips on how to help them get a bit more healthy? They seem a little better now, but not much. My hardneck garlic is on the other hand doing great.

Normally they grow with very little problem but this years weather has took its toll on lots of crops
Depending on the variety they may have just reached the end and so small onions but we can always try again
