Davie, it took a couple attempts to master this pattern and I tweaked the rib by using 2 strands of gold UV CF, wet the fly and wow! It's as real of a caddis that I've ever seen! Love your vids, huge fan! Thank you!

Hello Davie, I wanted to thank you for the idea of going to ebay for feathers. I found a seller and was able to negotiate with them for the broken feathers that they could not sell because they had damage. I got all the colors I could ever want and I got them for a very good price. 35" feathers for 45 cents apiece! I have been trying to get good deals for the things that the businesses can't sell as perfect. All the best, Sean

Davie, I found a procedure that keeps scissors sharp. Get some sand paper and at the end of the day after you have done tying take the scissors and cut a strip off the sandpaper, if they don't sharpen up quickly, you can cut some steel wool to sharpen them by cutting into the steel wool with the entire length of the scissors. I have tungsten tension scissors, and they are as sharp as they ever have been with this procedure. Hope this helps you keep more scissors. All the best, Sean

Beautiful, practical, realistic flies Davie, and I'm sure they convince the most wary of wild fish. Can I suggest you either go barbless or crush the barb? A requirement on the Derbyshire Wye and a good idea elsewhere.

in response to Sean Mooney. Any well stocked fly tying shop will have lead free wire available. You can probably even find it at bass pro or sportsmans warehouse. It`s very easy to find in colorado and I use it instead of lead some patterns. Just a wee bit more expensive but can be used in yellowstone which is why I keep it on hand.

Yes, I can use weight in the waters but lead is illegal in all Maine waters due to the detrimental effect on the Loon population. I did find some lead free wire, and found some metal tape which will allow me to shape the way Davie does. Wire is more difficult to get shapes because wire on wire slips. Thanks for your suggestions.

I have found a way to make the lead wire (lead free in my case) flat. I use .015 lead free, pull the required amount and put it in the vise lengthwise. It is not perfect but pretty darn close. Works for me. Hope it helps.

    Hi Sean, hi Davie,
for this purpose I use Veniard Tungsten Sheet. You can cut them into small strips and use them as a weighted unterbody. It is a little different but for me it works.
    Best,
    Stefan

Great fly Davie. What sizes do you tie this in? The caddis are hatching on my local loch at the moment and this looks like a good fly to use.

    Hello Davie,
I'm tying this fly again... small ones. Heading into the Rocky Mountains next week for camping and fishing. This fly, with less lead due to the small shallow streams, is a wonderful fly to have with. I've been wondering if you fish diving caddis patterns (maybe you don't have caddis that dive to lay eggs)? On small rocky streams here there are a few species laying eggs that way. I've researched diving caddis (and some diving baetis) patterns but never tied them.

    Hello Davie,
As most people I do like your videos, there great!
My question about this pheasant tail caddis.
Is it possible to use ostrich-plume, instead of the colored/bleached peacock?
greetings to you and tight lines

Hello again Davie, I wanted to know what I could use instead of lead. Lead is illegal to use in Maine, USA, so I can't put it on. If the Ranger finds a tourist using lead they take away the fishing privileges, but a Maine citizen looses all of the flies that they have with them and pay a hefty fine. (I have spent more time trying to learn to tie and watching you more this week than I spent with my wife) I got bit by the fly tying bug!!!!

    Hey Davie great fly!
I have seen on all your flies you use a piece of wax. What kind of wax do you use?, because I´m trying with an old bee wax and it deposes some kind of white layer when the thread is tied down.
    Cheers from Argentina!

Davie I went to eBay and bought 10 ostrich plumes in white. I've watched your video on dying feathers, now is there any thing I need to be careful about when dying these plumes.
