I had a terrible whining noise in my Land Rover, oddly it stopped on the same day I got divorced.

I have a 1994 v8 discovery 1 which I concerted from auto to manual, before I did the swap I had the heartland transfer box rebuilt by Ashcroft. Once fitted the transfer box had a constant whine very similar to the old one I had taken out, I spoke to save who said send it back and we will check it - for quieter gears. I did this they checkout and coupons any issues but it's now absolsilent. I'm pretty sure there used to be information on their website about later transfer boxes having a Q in their serial number and this signified quiet gears which were a later development, I seem to remember it saying they constantly improved them with small revisions to make them quieter.

Im about ready to drop my transfer case.
But im a bit low on funds. I need to purchase some hard parts. I figure about 500.00 in parts. I do like the non collapsible spacer.

That sounded fine to me. I've got that 'free' one on the bench which I may strip down at some point. Do you have a video that shows the drilled gear that the early ones didn't have to allow oil to the output shaft? Just for my interest to help me determine what I'm looking for. Think the one I've got on the bench is an early one ('84) and doesn't have that modification.

I will do a video for you to explain the differences while I have one stripped down

Would running the transfer case with some sort of load or drag on the output flanges help reveal a noise if there was one? Running the transfer case free without actual torque going through it may make it run quiet on the test bench but in the vehicle it becomes noisy?

I have mentioned this before, but I am limited to a 3 hp 220v 3 phase motor for the speed control - I have a 600v 10 hp motor, but the inverter is thousands of dollars!

What was the noise at the end when you took a reading sounded like bearing or was it from your setup ?

8:27 When you turned it off I heard an end play noise, could be from the input or main shaft.

awesome test rig, any way to install an old transmission brake to load the box up with diff lock in? maybe even water cooled?? My old 110 was very noisy under load but was quiet while coasting... anyway, love the vids Mike.

Problem is the motor - as you know it took a lot to get the right motor/ inverter combination
      I have a 600V 10 hp 3 phase motor here - but the inverter is over $3000
If I load this motor it will blow - it is only 3 hp 220v
