For years Google has tried to get Street View into the country, yet has faced heavy public backlash every time. As a german i didn't even know we have basically no street view and taught it was normal that you're only able to use it on certain bigger streets. But data privacy and security is a huge deal here. At school we always had to sign a form, stating that we are ok with being in the Class photo each year 😂 it's the little things you absolutely don't think about that are often the weirdest about your home country
The school picture thing, we have that here too in the Netherlands now, and my school just said they wouldn't even bother to take class pictures now

As a german, i can say that this is wrong. There is no street view in germany, because there is no internet in germany. We still use smoke signs and carrier pigeons.
And I thought Germany was the better country in a crowd for protecting privacy. ..but you know, even in the worst parts of Russia and Africa, they have street view. 🤷♂️

I personally like the current state of street view in Germany. My home town is one of the few that had street view imagery taken back in 2008. And as it's not updated it's kind of a time capsule for me to see what the place I grew up in looked like when I was a kid. It's quite nostalgic to look at.
Outside Germany you can view your street from different years. The downloadable version lets you view historic aerial photos, so you can see old road layouts and buildings, or even how climate change has affected the world.
You can view your street in any time you want
even if it's updated, you can still see historical imagery

Which is why dashcam footage is not valid evidence in court. If you present evidence to court, it is considered as 'being brought to the public eye'

@@Felixkeeg This is WRONG. Dashcam footage in general can be admissible in court, if the judge deems it so. So if there is no big damages and no one was harmed, it will most likely not be admissible, because the right of privacy will be seen as more important than whatever happened. But if people got hurt or there is big damages, it's most likely that it will be ruled as admissible. And if it's not, but it's still a severe case you can always take it to a higher up court.
@@LucaBl This, and even if all instances declare it void you can still go before other courts to over throw that and get the case rolled up again if you have for example a valid point of your evidence being more important than the privacy laws.

A street view car drove by one time (i live in germany) and then i did a bunch of wheelies on my bike and the dude seemed quite pissed off. I think thats why he dont upload

I once saw the google street view car drove by when I was little and at that moment our street was in horrendous conditions. It has been renewed since a few years and I even SAW another street view car 2 years ago BUT NOPE on street view my street is still the ugly old one! I'm PISSED

Most streetview images in Germany haven’t been updated since 2008.
Whenever I feel nostalgic, I look up the places I used to go when I was a child.
One can still see Schlecker and the hair salon of my aunt. My aunt died 2008 and her hair salon died with her. So yeah..

Wow I just checked the satellite photos seem fairly recent which annoys me. Like the fuck do you want to know how my house looks from above.
But the streetview images are soooo old, there is still the treehouse which has been gone for quite a while.
@@Ikxi Satellite images (actually those are taken from planes) are really a privacy problem. In Hamburg the super rich people often live in mansions that you can't even see from street level, but from above you can easily see them and you can even go back to the construction phase to see the room layout from above. That information is priceless for criminals.
From above you may also be able to identify parked cars worth stealing. Professional car thefts often steal on demand. If someone wants a red Audi A6, they will look where they can find such a car. Google makes that much easier.
Living in Germany and I feel so safe knowing that it's illegal to take photos and videos of people without their permission. I wish I could have this much freedom all over the world. Its the way things should be. You are free to live life as people should.

@@MT07ridez dashcams are allowed. You're just not allowed to publish the footage without consent. But you are allowed to use the footage to show to insurense or the police as evidence.
4:28 Speaking of Privacy, many German dash-cam channels would censor the numberplates as that can already get you a fine.

One german dash-cam channel (Sascha Fahrnünftig) already got fined for showing license plate uncensored. Sascha's videos are mostly about bad driving so its understandable why people did not want to see their license plate in his videos.

Actually just using a dash cam in your car can get you a fine (when it's running all the time) since it's not allowed to film random people without their consent even when you won't make the footage publicly available. There are some exceptions like if you are filming something (like a building or make a picture of someone you know with consent) and there are other bystanders in the background or at the side (generally speaking: these people are not the main focus of your shot) you don't need to ask them for consent or if you film a crowd of 25+ people you don't need to ask for consent etc.
But just filming the driver in front of you (that's what dash cams do most of the time) is not allowed and therefore most courts won't accept dashcam footage (so it's basically useless having a dash cam in germany and even might get you in trouble)...
Technically even just the filming itself is already against the data protection law here in Germany(and EU). You are not allowed to collet any data which can identify someone, without their acceptance. There is just few exceptions, like it is in the interest for the public(news media coverage) or places where it's expected to be filmed(in front of sightseeing objects/ or Concerts)
The issue here is seeing Germany as the outlier instead of the norm. Germany learned painfully at their expense the value of privacy. The rest of us keep giving way one of the most important the threaten civil rights. I've heard it from somewhere that the last few generations' revolutions in recent times fought for democracy and liberty, ours will need to fight for privacy.

As a Dutch resident in Germany, I can add to this.
Firstly, Germans love their privacy (as well explained in this video), they are generally technophobic towards IT and have a low IT implementation in the government, they love their Fax and paper.
As for Streetview, the hostility to it was rather whipped up by the tabloid press, and I can remember many a German being filmed in their front yard for TV news where they then told us they didn't want to be visible to everyone on Streetview. The irony of this was hilarious.

I remember when it launched here. It didn't really help that some of the license plates and faces remained unblurred after publishing. But like they say, the data still is really old. I can still see my curtains hanging in the house I moved out of like 10 years ago

Difference is that Wikipedia is public domain, and Google's street view is not. If we have mass data collection happening at very least it should become public domain. Now we have a completely messed up situation where only big-tech have ability to collect data on large scales, and only they can then profit of it, we are literally getting deeper and deeper into situation where more and more of our life is literally owned in some way by 1 of few largest companies. Facebook literally owns all social online networks in Europe at least - and there is no way someone else could break into this market without throwing out tens of billions euros, even though a handful of developers could build a competitive application on on-par or even better in terms of features in a span of 1-2 years.
Now that I think about it... I was never asked if I wanted my house blurred 🤔

It was in the news for quite a while, I told them to blurr my hourse, it was quite an easy process with an internet form tbh. I also made them blurr my parents home without ever talking to them about it. And I made them blurr some of my neighbors homes because I figured my house could maybe seen from weird angles.

One cool thing about the whole street view debacle: Looking through the pictures of a mapped city like Berlin feels like going back 100 years in the past - even though is 'just' 12 years old data. So much has changed in this short amount of time.

That was with the old laws before the new EU data protection laws (called DSGVO in Germany) have been passed. Now fines for violations of data protection can base on a percantage of the income of a company.

Privacy is one of the biggest forefront of your safety. If an individual has information about you they can manipulate you in any way they desire. Harassment, Sexual misconduct, Blackmail, Violence, Theft, Manipulation and/or destruction of ones Life.

That was how it was like for the people in the DDR until 1989, if the government knew that you didn't like/ agree with something they said, then you might not get a job or your daughter couldn't go to school or you/ her could go into jail (Torgau was a thing, where they would send children to, "to make them better" (you could say more "fitting" for the socialistic goverment) because in their opinions, having your own opinions or freedom was bad, you had to follow the "Kollektiv". They told the people that it was "good for them". They taught them how they should be have and treated them like a adults).
And they denied that there were nationalsozialists in the east so, you know that that's denied a FACT, and they killed the democracy by having only one thing, that you could vote so, you probably can guess why the people were happy to have "one" Germany again. Lol

The answer is: Google faced public backlash. Legally they're in the clear as long as they blur faces, license plates and record from a human vantage point (not peek over fences). Apple Look Around, their version of Street View, just launched this summer and no public outcry so far (Apple, too, offers the option to blur your house. But that's available worldwide.)

I lived in the east of germany in 2019. we had a room in the cellar with multiple „phone lines“ in it. Connected to each apartment in the block. As stasi agent you were able to connect a cable to an apartment and your phone in the cellar to listen to everyone living in the building.

I was wondering myself why there's so few street view spots. When I was younger I couldn't understand, why people are so feared of things like street view but by seeing what huge amounts of information they and anyone else can gather about you, my opinion changed a LOT.

It's possible to upload your own 360 views to street view, and most countries have at least one user submitted 360 photo, they might be using that to fudge the numbers.

There’s a very weird border section with Belgium and Germany called the Vennbahn. It’s a former rail track that belonged to Belgium, even if it passed Germany, causing a very weird border situation where there were strips of a few meter wide in Germany belonging to Belgium. Even after the track got closed, Belgium kept the land area.
So I looked on streetview on a road crossing that track, and literally nothing of that road was available, except for 2 spots. You guessed it, the parts in Belgium, very funny imo.
As history has shown us: To much private data in other hands leads to bad things

Plus credit cards aren't really a thing. Yes, we do pay per card, but those are debit cards from out bank accounts. The difference basically comes down to not spending money you don't own.

In south west germany, there is a group of people that continued street view by themselves, and they're taking more pictures every day. You can see a big spot of it when you go over the south west, in particular the city Reutlingen

The strangest thing is that the government still requires you to register your address in person every time you move in Germany. In Berlin, they even asked which floor my door was on and whether it was on the left or right of the stairs. I considered this a far larger and more worrying invasion of my privacy

Funny, South Korea has a similar axe to grind against Google Maps. Absolutely no street view, or, hell, even Transit maps for that matter.

I meant to say that South Korea, although it has street view, has no street directions or navigational ability in Google maps whatsoever. So if you want directions from point A to point B, ie, GPS navigation, you're gonna need other apps' help for that.

South Korea is a very different case. Google is pretty rough there, but it's because they protect themselves from foreign companies. If you try the mapping app from one of their domestic services like Naver or Kakao, it has all the features Google Maps have worldwide and they work fine. Directions, transit, street view, everything. Heck, even Bing maps work better than Google in Korea. It's just because they refuse to release mapping data to Google, which is largely because Google does not want to blur their satellite photos of military bases... It's complicated, I don't fully get all the details, but that's the gist of it. Tl;dr Koreans don't mind street view, they just don't want Google doing that.

I get the privacy thing. However one thing I love the most about street view is the fact they record places over & over again and you can go back and look at older streetviews. It's really the closest thing we got to a time machine.
I remember quite well to this.Honestly, all this was based on a newspaper campaign. The newspaper managed to mobilize their readers and also handed out prints that could be used to get their house blurred. Finally the ministry jumped on the band waggon.
Well, i have to add that this was the biggest german news paper which is quite influencial. The owner is very successful in slowing down the growth of google in Germany. They also invented the link tax which finally got law. Without that news paper, maybe there would be street view in Germany.
To be clear: does this apply to Austria, as well? Austria is only mentioned halfway through the video, though it's a completely different country with different laws. As most Austrians might tell you, they're definitely not Germans. 😅
I have 4 austrian friends and they all agree, austrian government is so lazy they just watch what germany does, then copy it. Maybe change some minor details here and there so that it looks like they have put effort in it. 😂

@Dave Baton You know that modern day Austria is actually the former (majority) German part of the Habsburg Empire or Austria-Hungary (minus the former Sudetenland) and German Nationalism in Austria didn't started after WW1.
They are most definitely ethnically and culturally German but not politically as they have their own independent country.

What your house looks like from the outside isn't important to anyone. There isn't much that can be gleamed from that, and no one really cares about it that much.
ON THE OTHER HAND, your online activity, THAT is something absolutely paramount, and left with very little to no protection.
And not because of whatever weird porn you may or may not watch.
Simply looking at which articles you read, which headlines & video suggestions you clicked on, and which you scrolled past, what you said on social media, the phrasing and vocabulary used, and who you interacted with: All that can give tremendous informations about your own private thoughts.
From your political opinions to your mood, there is little that can't be deduced from it. No need for humans to do the analysis work, bots can do at no cost and on massive scales.
And they do! For advertisers, of course, but also political parties, who wish to discourage the other side from voting and motivate their own, or target people still susceptible to change their minds with tailored propaganda (often disguised as poll results and news articles). Effectively, manipulating elections before voting even occurs.
This means automatically gathering and maintaining nominative lists of people and their political affiliations! The Stasi's wet dream!
And at the same time, the use social media make of it is specifically to deliver content customized to keep as much of people's attention as possible. ("Maximizing viewer engagement", as they like to put it.)
Not only is it addiction by design, but their algorithms have learnt to do so by leveraging our own biases, only showing us content that never challenges our opinions, and, on the contrary, reinforces us in our beliefs, whether justified or not. This is largely what has been driving the widening political divide we've been seeing in recent years throughout the western world.
There are fortunately some ways to fight back against it. One is legislation: in Europe, the GDPR laws were certainly a step in the right direction. More can still be done.
Another is to take our own privacy seriously. Sites like RUclips are now required to offer options to turn off tracking, and we should all do so in our preferences. Browsers like Brave and Firefox are becoming much-more privacy oriented, and a number of extensions (uMatrix, uBlock, etc) help limit the extent to which we're tracked.
Unfortunately, too few people bother to take care of this.

I agree in all but one aspect. Why shouldn't Germans be against street view *and* want strong data protection laws? Big Data shouldn't be underestimated.
I don't think this is that bad honestly. Sure, I will receive ads that appeal to me, and during elections, people will knock on my door because they know I am leaning towards a certain candidate and they know what issues I care about (this hasn't happened in my country yet but it's on its way). It's good in the sense that companies are giving me what I want because it's a waste of my time and their time when they give me something I am not interested in. So as long as they don't do anything damaging, it's fine. Then again, I am Swede. If I told you my name, you know how much I earn, how much taxes I pay, where I live, my personal number, how old I am, etc. You get real comfortable with that.

It's unfortunate that Germany objects to Streetview. For historians, especially architectural historians and preservationists, the ability to look back at the condition and appearance of buildings over time is a wonderful resource.
I fail to understand how Streetview is an infringement on anyone's privacy. Your house sits on the street and that view of your house is a public view. You can't object to someone looking at your house from the street. How does a photograph of it change that basic fact?
Fun fact: way back when my father was a young man, he was spied on by the Stasi. We are an Eastern German family and he was always openly critical against the DDR and kind of rebellious. On lots of days, he noticed the telephone crackle.

Germany is an interesting place in general. In Ireland and the UK it's becoming increasingly rare to use cash, with most people tapping contactless cards and now Google/Apple pay on their mobiles. Where as Germany is almost completely cash dominant, visiting in early 2020 it was basically impossible to use a card in the majority of businesses, and most of those who did take card would only accept their own local cards.
I like using cash, seeing the physical stuff in your wallet get less and less and having to get new every so often really helps to keep track of your spending imo

Collecting publicly visible wifi data is basically the same as making photographs, just on a different wavelength.
This was not about free wifi. Google collected the Networks IPs, which enables them to locate android phones even if location services are turned off, because google can match WiFi networks around you, that get recognized by your phone with their database of WLAN IPs.

The issue with google and such is that they collect giant pools of largely useless data, very openly. Compared to Google, the NSA and CIA are like price snipers when it comes to information while google is nuking the target from orbit.

I see Google streetview cars often in Germany. They do take the pictures, but only for internal use. The information is used for example for Google maps navigation.
The word you search is "Datenschutz". It's like the health care, things you don't have.

10% of renenue + 5% added per additional run. revenue is money incoming before taxes, which additionally reveals revenue amounts as fines are fractions from the raw revenue. Transparency for the win. 10,15,20,25,... % of reveneu is a shit ton of money in case of Google/Apple/Facebook/other big companies.
The case was with the old laws. The new data protection laws (DSGVO) allow larger fines based on the companies income (as far as I know).

If you are there, are trying to find a business that works in an apartment, the business pin is located +/-100m to not go door to door because the street number is not located on the houses is an issue...

Well thats a little oversimplified. Our government did NOT learn this lesson because they are still pushing hard for mass surveillance etc. but we are in the lucky position that we have a lot of smart and talented people that actually did learn this lesson in school and organized (like in the "Chaos Computer Club" or CCC or like epicenter.works in Austria and "none of your business" the Organization from Max Schrems the guy who singlehandedly made facebook basically illegal in Europe just to name a few examples) and are monitoring and fighting back, many times win, sometimes lose but never let the government or big tech have it their way without a fight. And they have a lot of public support, can mobilize huge protests, win in courts (many judges also seem to have learned this lesson and protect it with their rulings) and flood the inboxes of our elected representatives. So we are very lucky to have all these civil unions in place basically from the start (since data became important).
But data protection and that war (and even heavy political disputes) are VERY unpopular here in Germany seem to be the only real lessons that seem to have stuck around. There is still a decent amount of people who think a "strong leader" is favorable over complicated democratic processes, antisemitism and racism are still around (not dominant but still there) etc. So if we ACTUALLY learned our lesson things like this wouldn't occur...

I remember when we debated this subject at school. At that time my teacher explained to me what the main problem was with Google StreetView. There were many arguments in public, like that burglars can now plan better. Or that the cameras are mounted so high up to look over the hedges, walls and fences to private properties. But the main problem was that Google links its data and information. Everything I look at in Google Streetview is linked to my profile. And all buildings in StreetView are linked to profiles and information.
Well, you could argue why this is a problem with StreetView and not with other services. But at the time this problem was one of the main reasons against it.
Honest opinion from my side: Well done. Convenience should not be above privacy. Who knows what chance I will be denied, because on any profile of Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. etc., which are against me.

The fact that you can freely have that conversation proves that you have freedom of speech. That is much more important.
The main issue though was that the mass media reported on how to send the "blur request" to Google in a "You have to do this" was. Some newspapers even published form letters to use. This meant that thousands upon thousands of people who did not have any kind of (technical) understanding of what would happen (this was before Google even started publishing street view pictures) followed the advice.
I know over here regarding the social media thing (mainly what's posted to the likes of Twitter and Facebook) it's actually very common for people to be denied a job due to stuff they post on there, and I've had some businesses openly admit that, even if you have it on private, they have their own backdoors to check it regardless (or in some cases, they force you to login in front of them, else you're denied a job). Stuff like that I can 100% understand and really don't agree with businesses doing it. But street view? My biggest complaint with the complaints is anybody can jump in a car and park outside your house and scope it out anytime, and banning a website from doing it doesn't fix that inherent issue. Pretty sure the only "fix" for that is to not live anywhere near other people.
One cool thing on the fact that photos are now renewed in Germany is the fact that you can easily see how cities change. Since these photos were taken in 2008 you can easily detect things like city growth, infrastructure change or even gentrification.
