I’m so glad I spent the time watching this whole video, it gave me inspiration to go out and start clearing and organizing my garage tomorrow. I decided to split half my garage into tools and the other half is my outdoor kitchen, being said I need to organize the tool side and this video helped me so much, thank you guys, I also just subscribed to Doug’s RUclips channel.
Hi Doug, I tried to look up the foam website that you recommended but was unable to identify the different foam products that you used to park your hand tools. Can you list specifically what you ordered for the base and the cut outs? Thank you
This watch was worth every minute. I have spent 2 weekends prior to watching this and was feeling a bit overwhelmed because of the tools I have and trying to organize them . This gets a solid 10 for some practical, not over the top not expensive organization solutions.
The best part is when he said “I don’t waste time going to bars, and I don’t waste time watching sports. This is what I do with my time.” Amen to that brother! Thought I was the only one that felt that way.
I clicked on this video thinking that there was no way I'm going to watch an hour long youtube video no matter the subject matter. i was wrong... Very much enjoyed this video. Thank You
Agreed. I am hauling around shopvacs everywhere... definitely want to know the make/model of those vaccuums! The modular trailer hitches were genius too!
This will help me so much. My husband died three weeks ago, and I am trying to figure out how to organize everything in his shop. He was a master mechanic, and the amount of tools is mind-boggling. This will give me a place to start and is so helpful. I really appreciate all the great ideas, because by God, I am going to learn to use all those tools.
I’m so sorry for your loss, it can be overwhelming but having everything organised will make it much easier to get started, take a basic mechanics course, it could be a great outlet for you and would make him proud!
My condolences 💐 your husband’s energy is all over the place and in those tools so as you learn to use them and work with them, you will feel him with you❤️🩹💝💖
Good luck sweetie. Learning how to use them is a big goal. Most of yesterdays mechanic tools are really usable on late m odern cars . The resale value is unbelievable low Ten cents on the dollar is not unbelievable. Its really sad. My good friend works at a big dealership and guys that been there 25 ;years dies and widows try to sell the husbands tools and thats the norm. Pawn shops it a nickel on the new dollar. I have 40 yeas of my own shops tools and cant bring myself to give them away I`m gonna wait till I day and let other give them away. That way the sale of my life's investment cant kill me .
Paraphrasing - If you have time to look for it in the disorganised shop, you have time time to organise the shop. That’s pure gold! I’m inspired. Thanks, guys.
I didn't get 30 minutes into this video before I had to go out to my garage and start cleaning and reorganizing. This is chock full of brilliant ideas.
Harhar... @36:16 as my grandpa used to say: "You don't need to be the smartest, but you gotta know how to help yourself!" Great shop with some unique solutions I will be stealing away for mine... Thanks for sharing!
My dad taught me to put his tools right back where I found them and to make sure their clean or I'll never use them again. That was a great life lesson a very long time ago that I still practice today.
A big thank you for making this video and special thanks to the friendly host/owner Doug who took the time to take us on this journey. I for one learned a great deal ! 👍 For me, the vaccuum hack and the cutting the foam trick is what i liked most. Oh, and i also keep repeating " put stuff back where it belongs so you won't have to waste time looking for it " here in my household. Probably done it a million times, my wife and kids just won't learn ... 😬
40:17 with the screw driver cutout foam gave me that “awwww” reaction. Never would’ve thought of this. Also I watched the whole video and didn’t even realize you had me hooked for AN HOUR AND 6 MINUTES!!!
I don’t ever comment on videos. But Neighbor Doug’s workshop is awesome! It’s hard to pick one hack as I say they’re all useful. But putting the air hoses and shop vac up and out of the way are my favorite. I’ll be figuring on how to make that happen in my workshop.
Okay. The hair on the back of my neck stood up when I saw the trailer hitch receiver and vise hack at the bench. Dude! This is not brain surgery, but it surely is ingenious, outside the box, power thinking. And of course I'm stealing it. Well done, Doug and Hometown has a new subscriber.
I do tons of spray paint jobs....how have I never seen that shaker setup!?...The longest video I have watched on RUclips DYI.....Im a place for everything guy with to much everything ..what a help....thanks guys....pretty sure this raises you up to at least a C lister....:)
I'm off from work for the next 5 days. I'm going into my shop and I'm not coming out until I've got a working Sawzall paint can shaker, a sliding workbench top w/ storage underneath, safety glasses storage, a trailer hitch mounted bench vise, PVC cordless tool organizer, hideable hinge-mounted bench grinder, garage door rail-attached vacuum & air hose reel. Thanks to your neighbor Doug for the great ideas!
OH MY GOD. If you had any Idea how many hours I have spent on google looking for this exact kind of video, it would baffle your minds! This man is 100% genuis. Thank you both for taking the time to make and share this. (sorry If I'm "gushing",) but damn... I picked up so many ideas for my shop project (newly enclosed back patio) all from one video. (I got a lot of stuff) Thanks again guys!
This is one of those videos that if you did not finish, you go back to your history the next morning to catch up. I enjoyed all of the hacks. Makes since and solve all my problems. I watched every second of it. Thank you both for taking the time and sharing knowledge.
The brush idea is great. I'm cheap and have one brush. Most times I spend as much time looking for the brush as I do cutting and in turn, I leave a mess. So for 2023, I'm getting more brushes.
I could watch Doug all day, he is such a great communicator and always makes what ever he is doing sound interesting. Adam you are so lucky to have such a generous neighbour. 90% of Dougs ideas and tweaks are so simple once seen, but it takes a genius like Doug to enlighten us.
This video is so sophisticated. It's almost like garage philosophy. I've never heard anyone with such clear and precise explanations about the process we men go through in the shop environment. Especially at 8:40 when he explains that you enter your shop, then spend 15 minutes searching for a tool--then repeat the process again the next day. I have two speed squares and both of them have vanished somewhere in my shop, and I've been looking for 2 days now, wasting at least 30 minutes. His point about time wasted searching for tools is so important! What an inspiring video, and how dumb I feel now for not having a place for my speed squares.
I was glued to this video for the whole hour.! Doug has an excellent approach to problem solving and efficient working. What impressed me the most about Doug’s workshop is the fact that he came up with a lot of cost effective solutions instead of just choosing to spend big money on over priced systems that rarely cater for your exact need. Also great work Adam on putting this content together.
My wife sent this video to me and preparation and working on our garage she has some similar challenges. 100% this video was worth watching. My favorite part is the fact that everything has has a home, Whether it's used every day or periodically period the foam cut out who's by far one at the top, Installing the shop, vac in the ceiling was a great idea. I could go on and on. Thanks again
I have a confession to make. I have gone back and watched this video multiple times. There are so many great ideas and things to see in this video that you just can't absorb it all in one or two "watchings". I am 60 years old and I can figure out how to organize things on my own, but seeing what Doug has done has shown me ways to organize that I would never have thought of. I share Doug's thoughts on being clean, neat and organized in my garage and seeing what he has done is very inspiring to see it all in completed form. This video should be required to be viewed by all us garage guys on You Tube. I have shared this video with all my friends and we have all discussed it amongst ourselves. And then your other video "Garage Makeover - The Hardest Part Is Getting Started" is the next logical step in implementing some of the ideas from this video. Adam your workbench makeover turned out great. Thank you for sharing this great information.
I have lost count of how many shop organisation/hack videos I've watched. This is one of the best ones I've seen!! I'm in the process of overhauling mine and I'll be implementing almost all of these ideas... I just went out to look how I can fit my vac on the ceiling!!!
Oh... and I had to do a "quick" repair on my polytunnel this morning which is right outside the workshop... 20 minutes I spent tripping over stuff trying to find the tools... I definitely have the time lol
OMG, I hate this guy!!. I want to be half the man this guy is!! The paint shaker & sliding table top alone is worth the whole video. And he doesn't make me feel bad for having 3 brooms and dust pans in my garage. And that floor dust pan sales just went up 600% at amazon. The mobile work cart is from my mechanicing days. Keep them coming.
Today I had set aside for some clean-up work in the garage. I accidently came across this video and ended up watching the whole thing. There are several of "my favorite" hacks, but the one I am actually going to use today is getting my vacuum up and out of the way, even though my vac is not remote controlled. I do have a floor dust pan and broom, and a bench brush, but Doug just showed me that it's OK to have more than one. The cheap paint brush located at the equipment is a great idea. Thanks for the great video. Now it's time to get off my butt and get busy out into the garage!
This is what I call, "Internet Gold". Great video Adam and Doug. Makes me wish I had a garage to set up like that. My favorite thing is seeing the "One Eye Customs" sticker and then later finding out Doug has one good eye. Also, the sticky note for lent tools is a great idea. Now you won't be able to get away with "borrowing" one of Doug's tools and keeping it. ha
Wow. This is a treasure trove of ideas. Loved everything, especially tray to catch mess under band saw, floating table top with storage for long items inside, trailer hitch and door hinge mounted bench equipment, vacuum and air hose equipment mounted on ceiling, and so much more. Thanks for sharing!
I almost feel black would be more obvious than a color? Feels like your eye would notice that blank space easier, since the tools themselves have color on them.
@@EricJ0hansson I typically see a yellow base, then a dark gray or black cutout layer. So when a tool is removed, you see yellow where the tool should be
I was so impressed by this man that I showed this video to my wife, who is obsessed with organizing. His hack for grinders and the bench vise were my favorites. Thank you for the video.
My favorite "hack" was Doug himself. That guy is absolutely amazing to listen to and to see what he's done with his abilities and crafts! I agree with everything he said. I once was a scrambled mess, then learned about "lean" strategies and love what lean has done for me. Great vid, I loved that it was long! Thank you guys.
Hinged grinders is my favourite hack. Grinders take up a lot of room (annoyingly at the front of the bench) and the hinge system is a great idea to keep the front of the bench clear and also make cleaning easy. My second fav would be the trailer hitch vices because of the same space-saving reasons (although the grinders win for the added ease of being able to clean under them).
I liked the "trailer hitch vices" too but I thought the trailer hitches had a little 'wiggle-room' that might let your project move when you work on it. Would that be a problem?
@@td6608 Thanks! I'm interested, but how does it work? I don't know exactly what you are implying. Did you thread tap a side of the hitch receiver to allow a bolt to tighten the 2" "vice hitch" tube into a bind? No, your idea is probably faster. haha
@@cockerjc If you imagine the outer piece of trailer hitch tubing six inches long, cut a slit out about a half inch wide the full length then halfway along weld a half inch nut on one side and a bushing that the bolt will fit through on the other side of the slit. Then install the bolt through the bushing into the nut and as you tighten it it will pull the two halves together and clamp the inner piece tightly. I use a 3/4" wrench but I'm thinking if welding a 1/2" x 4" rod across the bolt heads so I won't even need the wrench. I have to look again but I believe I built one like this only with two pieces of tubing (upper and lower) and use one bolt for both. This way I can use either the upper if I want the vise higher or the lower (about 6" down) if I want the vise lower. I'd make a video but I don't have the guts to post anything.
Love the fact that Doug obviously has disposable income, but very grounded to the idea that neat solutions don't always have to be the most expensive ones. This is a busy workshop that's extremely organized. "There's a place for everything" indeed!
This guy is on point! Take the pebble from his hand, grasshoppers! I totally agree the statement "if you have time to spend 15 minutes looking for something each time, you have time to keep it organized by putting it back when you are finished using it".
Thought I was going to skim through this and watched every second in awe. The best tip is having a place for everything and knowing when it is missing. My dad used to flip out when he only knew a tool was missing when he needed it. With 8 boys in the family, we were always borrowing his tools and forgetting to return them! Love the vac and air hoses on the ceiling out of the way. Thanks for sharing.
Other than all of them. I liked the two layers of foam for the screwdrivers. I have an overabundance of tools. I inherited from my dad, my father in law and people will just give me tools. No where near the amount that Doug has, but. Thanks for this RUclips gold. Bob
The vacuum hanging from the ceiling and the way he rain his air line around the garage door. I of cource bought a new US General 72” rolling cabinet and can’t weight to get in in. I have another rolling tool box and going to use for woodworking tools. I love a lot of he’s ideas and Thanks to him for letting you in to show us his garage and for you doing the video. My first time seeing what you do on You Tube
Ok, this guy is FANTASTIC. I've been a fan of shop organization for many years and I still found several new ideas in this shop. Thanks so much to you and Doug for taking the time to make this video.
Wranglerstar had a good idea of organizing the shop, focus on an area within your arms length and don't move on until that area is done. Great vid, you're lucky to have a neighbor like Doug.
Great ideas. To expand upon the toolbox drawer shadowing, use a contrasting color underneath the cutout layer to add more visualization to the missing tool.
That's a great idea could use different colors like red for metric blue for SAE. Yellow and green for phillips and regular screwdrivers. The list goes on. 👍
Dam, That was fantastic. Someone who thinks like I think! I have been doing these types of improvements in my shop for years, but no where near this level. Doug, you are so right, It takes time, years and decades to get there! It's an evolution, it's a journey, its a process and it's a way of conduct in the shop. At 50, I am starting to realize, the older I get, the more important these organization hacks become. Wasted movement, bending, reaching, remembering where things go, losing tools, searching for tools is a drag! My favorite hack is the centrally located vacuum up on the ceiling!
@Mark Gage I have a natural gas fired forced air system in there. Would have loved to do in floor heat but 25 years ago it wasn’t a big thing and not many were doing it at that time. But the good thing with the forced air system is I can add a condenser pretty easily and also have AC in there if I would choose to. But for now, it is just a heating unit.
The stainless steel workbench is essentially what commercial kitchens are outfitted with. So check out a kitchen supply store or look for restaurant salvage. If you can catch a retail store being demolished, they will have heavy duty shelving and maybe carts too. Old discarded shopping carts have a ton of potential. Remove the basket but keep the handle and you have a sturdy dolly that could probably hold up anything short of a car engine. It's certainly capable of hauling around heavy bags of concrete and buckets.
I have a small shop and know the importance of tetris skills. This guy had me captivated...I LOVE repurposed stuf Among the many great ideas the can shaker blew my mind🤣👍👍
Awesome video, awesome shop. I work with a fellow that is as organized if not more. Problem is, It carries over to every aspect of his life. OCD to the max, to the point where as he's talking to you he's brushing lint off of your shoulder. If he happens to stop at your house or shop, as you're talking to him he's picking things off the floor and setting them in the trash, constantly looking around and getting more tense as he eyeballs your messy workbench. It's a running joke, however it is absolutely true, that he drives his wife and family absolutely nuts because it carries over into the house. He has a "better way" for everything, and don't you forget it. It is an absolute awesome trait if you can keep it under control and keep it to yourself. Once you start crossing the line of critiquing your co-workers, it's time for therapy
This is one of the most incredible storage and organizational video that I have ever watched. So many ideas that were created to fix an issue, not just a store bought kit. Keep these coming!
the biggest take away… don’t waste time watching tv, especially overpaid sports for hours on end. The organization is awesome, It really inspired me to do more in my garage. The sliding table surface is great
If you do like TV and sports like I do, hang a few of them in your shop like I did. Now I still watch all of the football games and get stuff done like what Doug showed. I agree with your post though!!!
At so many levels Doug's organized garage has inspired me. I will be studying this video for improvements on my shop.As he said knowing where everything makes work faster and easier. Thank you for showing this video and I hope Dough let's you get into more detail on future shows.
Amazing…Doug has it down. I’ve never seen a better organized shop. He is spot on about the time wasted looking for things. Nice to see a guy that knows how to use tools, takes care of them too. Thanks for the video.
Thank you to Adam and Doug. This is one I will keep returning to. This was an outstanding piece of work. The hour went by really fast. This was outstanding content!
My favorite hack was finding someone with the desire to make a difference. I will agree with you. That toolbox wall was candy to my eye. What a bad ass neighbor.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. If I could afford to hire Doug for a while, I'd have him organize my shop :) He has so many hacks that I appreciated that it is difficult to focus on just one. Hanging the Shop Vac near the garage door opener id probably my favourite. Snap On Toolboxes are just a dream in how he has things put together. The centre worktable storage / workspace excellent idea. All I can say is well done!
When you see this guy again, would you please personally thank him for me? And I'm sure everyone else. I'm sharing this with literally everyone I know. Picking Anacortes is impossible! Who'd think of a fold-away grinder? It's brilliant! The PVC pipe pieces to hold tools! The foam cut-outs - I'm getting PVC and foam today! Wait, it's Thanksgiving. Tomorrow!

Have to say I loved the vacuum where it is defiantly something I will be doing
Most favorite hack is the bench grinder hideaway. Thanks for your insight
They sell remote control outlets, so you can actually turn any shop vac into a remote controlled vacuum if you want :)
@Hello Floyd how are you doing
Chip brushes at Harbor Freight. Inexpensive and useful.
I didn’t even know I liked garage organization … until I saw this. Wow. So many great ideas! 🔨🛠️🪛🪚🧰
I love the steel tables with the fold away grinders and vices
I could also recommend you to someone better
This is what I call, "Internet Gold". Great video Adam and Doug. Makes me wish I had a garage to set up like that. My favorite thing is seeing the "One Eye Customs" sticker and then later finding out Doug has one good eye. Also, the sticky note for lent tools is a great idea. Now you won't be able to get away with "borrowing" one of Doug's tools and keeping it. ha
Sometimes the one-eyed man sees with much clarity...
For the foam shadow boards, make the bottom layer a different color. When it's missing, it's obvious.
Love it. Well, my wife calls me a neat-freak but Doug takes the cake. Now, I am a tool fanatic but Doug is borderline tool hoarder 😁
Omg. This man is amazing!!! How freaking neat and creative, I am more ashamed of my garage now 😂. KEEP UP GOOD JOB👏👏👏👏👏
@Daniel G I like that hinged grinder set-up, too. It'll allow me so much extra space.
I liked the "trailer hitch vices" too but I thought the trailer hitches had a little 'wiggle-room' that might let your project move when you work on it. Would that be a problem?
@@cockerjc Mine are similar only I made them so they clamp the inner piece. That works great!
Doug's personality is a treat. Hitch and foldable mounts for vises or other heavy tools are excellent ideas.
Love the fact that Doug obviously has disposable income, but very grounded to the idea that neat solutions don't always have to be the most expensive ones. This is a busy workshop that's extremely organized. "There's a place for everything" indeed!
Every single idea, concept, hack is 120% spot on, the checkered floor on the other hand, hmm 🤔, symbolic of…well you look it up.
Same! that was the fastest hour ever
@Hello Thomas how are you doing
Other than all of them. I liked the two layers of foam for the screwdrivers. I have an overabundance of tools. I inherited from my dad, my father in law and people will just give me tools. No where near the amount that Doug has, but.
Thanks for this RUclips gold.
Bob
@Hello Robert how are you doing
The vacuum hanging from the ceiling and the way he rain his air line around the garage door. I of cource bought a new US General 72” rolling cabinet and can’t weight to get in in. I have another rolling tool box and going to use for woodworking tools. I love a lot of he’s ideas and
Thanks to him for letting you in to show us his garage and for you doing the video. My first time seeing what you do on You Tube
@Hello Leon how are you doing
WOW... I am so happy for this guy I can cry... Because he is the luckiest man in the U.S.A. Because he living the dream... just living the dream.
The vises and grinders on a hinge are the best!
Bench grinder and vice ideas are “OFF THE CHARTS”. Thx for your great content Adam!!!
I took the same things away but gonna put the bench grinders on the receivers too
Ok, this guy is FANTASTIC.
I don't normally watch videos this long but enjoyed every minute of it.
I liked the TV in the shop. He can watch some of the game and be productive too.
My gosh Adam, perfect timing. As my shop clean up is on my to do list. DDoug is oustanding.
I second this, all the aviation mechanics I've met use this method to help really make missing tools stand out.
Spray foam works great
Dam, That was fantastic.
Thank you for your kind words!
@@OneEyeCustoms wow great.
How do you empty the vacuum cannisters? Do you need a ladder for that?
Never mind, just read the reply to Annie... Thanks, Great video!!
Awesome, genius, set up for the handy man’s garage!! awesome at the very least! Thanks a million for the great ideas!!!!
love the movable vice and pivoting grinders on the work bench... ingenious !!!
I have the same broom and dustpan on a stick !😂
And I also use clean paint brushes to keep my tools and areas clean. ❤️
You could do the vacuum idea with your standard shop vac and a remote outlet or Wi-Fi/Alexa enabled outlet. Great video thanks for all the tips.
I have a small shop and know the importance of tetris skills.
This guy had me captivated...I LOVE repurposed stuf
Among the many great ideas the can shaker blew my mind🤣👍👍
Doug has his STUFF together !! Thanks Doug for allowing Adam to show your being organized. Thanks Adam for sharing this video. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻✋🏻✋🏻👏🏻👏🏻
OCD here for sure
I love the creativity, the resourcefulness, the care, the detail and the pride. I hate long videos but this one was worth it.
My new hero this guy has his shop basically how we all wish ours were
ok... that was perhaps the best hour of useable ideas and intelligent rational that I've ever watched on RUclips. Thank you both. Awesome!
Good idea.
Also......
Don't watch any news.
Not watching news make life great.
Trust me I know.
My favorite is the air hose crank system. That's elegantly simple stuff, but I'd have never thought of it.
At so many levels Doug's organized garage has inspired me. I will be studying this video for improvements on my shop.As he said knowing where everything makes work faster and easier. Thank you for showing this video and I hope Dough let's you get into more detail on future shows.
What a legend! If I was a professional technical teacher I would take my students there for field trips! Respect!
Amazing…Doug has it down.
I’ve never seen a better organized shop. He is spot on about the time wasted looking for things. Nice to see a guy that knows how to use tools, takes care of them too.
Thanks for the video.
Hey guys, great organizational ideas. My favorite hack was the Bench Grinder hack. I love how well it fits on and under the bench. Great job!
Thank you to Adam and Doug. This is one I will keep returning to. This was an outstanding piece of work. The hour went by really fast.
This was outstanding content!
A place for everything and everything in its place. My uncle told me that when I was around 10, I'm 36 now and have never forgotten that.
Tomorrow!
@Hello Michael how are you doing
@@lydialas8756 Doing great - thank you. How about yourself?
15:57 You know it's serious when a label maker is involved. My favorite was the battery holder, so simple but effective.
