I don’t understand How these videos aren’t watched over a million times. This series is easily one of the best I’ve encountered for really thinking about how to put a workshop together. Thank you for taking the time to make these. Over the last few months I’ve watched each one a couple times as I’ve steadily turned my shop from a scrap collection heap to a real fabrication shop.

One of the best videos I’ve watched. I like how much you’ve utilized space and accessibility while maintaining visibility of the actual tools. Can’t tell you how often I’ve had to look for a specific tool after “organizing” my shop because I can’t remember exactly where I put it. Also i like how you’ve built a lot of your shelving. That alone provided tips. So If anyone is here because you’re frustrated and need a few ideas.. it’s worth watching. I know I’m rambling but I just spent 15 mins looking for a battery charger.

I totally agree with you about floor space being #1 in priority, and I think organization (or at least the wishful thinking!) is always an ongoing procedure in everyone's shop. One of the biggest things that helped me in my small shop was putting everything (on the floor) on wheels, so I can move it easily/quickly. This goes for cabinets, benches, machines, etc. It has greatly enhanced the usability of my available floor space, while also giving me the capability and extra space to do some larger projects that I never could have done, otherwise. Having the ability to move your floor layout in an instant, really makes a huge difference. Another thing that really helps, is having all (or most) of your work surfaces at the same table height...that way when you're working on something really long or extra large, it's easy to just pull another nearby table over for support, instead of always having to shim them up to match. Thanks for all the great ideas and tips, I enjoyed your video.

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  3 года назад

I agree with everything being the same height or very close. I built my miter station just a hair larger than my workbench back in my cubby (I really need to find a better way to describe that thing), so I could cut longer board and it could rest on it if needed.

Thank you for sharing this. Even if some of it was not new to me, it still made me think about how i am organizing my shop.. alot of things you mention is true also for me.. not knowing where to put something so it ends up somewhere maybe eating more valuable space than it deserves, based on how often it is used.. and then there is the habit part of things.. that if you had something in the "wrong" place it becomes "lost" if you move it.. because you are so used to it being in that (illogical still) place..

Great video, as always. I was just telling my daughter that it’s a shame that you didn’t start doing these all along the way if your journey for as well as you are doing. I get inspired by the ideas you have had and do use the info. That’s a huge thing to me because there are so many videos I watch for ideas but can only use bits and pieces of them because it doesn’t pertain to my specific wants/needs for my shop. Like I said before, you’re the first person I’ve seen that has designed and documented the same ideas I’ve been bouncing around about having a fliptop workbench instead of putting another tool on the other side. That’s huge, also! Thanks again for that one. 👍🏼
I’m going to print out your checklist and put it above my drafting desk in the shop to keep checking off the ❌s and ✅s until I can get mine finished being completely organized. I appreciate the help. 😃
My crimes are: 9, 10, 6, 7, and 8, in order of degree of mistakes. I have tons of wood scraps and I am trying to work on keeping them contained in small areas. I’m going to put a cubby type box on my French cleats to keep them up out of the way. I was given a bunch of curly maple from a recent local bank build and there are various sizes. I have not come up with an idea for them yet but once I do, it should utilize most of them. It’s tough getting rid of the stuff Left over from other projects, that’s for sure! Lol I have recently been saving the scraps and shavings for our family camping trips to starting campfires 🔥 . I think that’s a very useful idea. 👍🏼

Another nicely done video. I was laughing as you went through where you could put the drill - brilliant.
On the question of mistakes, they definitely ring true. 5, 6, 8 and 9 were especially poignant. My current shop is an exterior Tuff Shed which, after I insulated it, is about 9.5 x 19. Organization is absolutely key to success. I must have reworked the layout in Visio 50 times, and then still changed it all a dozen times more when I finally got things delivered. One thing that caught me several times was not realizing what wall space would end up being obscured by tools or cramped by other things on the wall - there is space between my drill press and miter saw, for example, but it’s hard to use effectively. And things on the wall in a corner require more open space on the adjoining wall than I thought.
    Keep the videos coming!

Thanks for this video. It has inspired me to rearrange my shop in ways that I resisted because "It has always been there." Many miscellaneous supplies that I rummage through about once every 6 months are taking up shelf space right beside where I work, while everyday tools are scattered all over the shop. I also am going to replace some of the shelves under the work bench with drawers - a case of easy to build but not easy to use. These are old issues but your presentation has motivated me!

Fantastic method and logic. Really looking forward to the next one!
I'm in a 8x15 ft area in a basement, so organization has been my main 'project' since march when I decided to create my own woodshop and get into woodworking. It's been really interesting figuring out how to use ceiling space! (I have exposed rafters, and the ceiling is low enough that I can palm it)
2nd to organization, but basically just as important, has been dust collection/cleanliness/airflow. Technically more valuable than organization, but projects relating to dust collection have been pretty quick. (I'm not doing ducting when everything is within reach of a 4" x 14' hose)

New subscriber. I loved how you provided your perspective and analysis as you approached organizing your shop. This is the most critical part and very few include this in their videos. Loved the top 10 list. I connected with several of them. Great video. Thank you. This will be helpful to me as I create my shop.

I've moved from a 36' by 16' shop to a 12' by 12' one. Your organization ideas will be useful. My first decision was to build two floor cabinets, remove the legs from my MFT and add a top. The initial hesitation was "I spent so much on the MFT I don't want to throw away the legs." I persevered and have zero regrets. Money spent should not hinder a new, better idea.

On my third, maybe fourth iteration of my “shop” (garage), and finally bit the bullet and ripped the whole thing back down to the studs. These videos have been so, so helpful in thinking differently about the rebuild. The irony here is that I work for Lexus, which implements Toyota 5S at its core. So much overlap with what you’ve covered in this video 😆 Keep at it!!

Nice video full of food for thought. I am in the middle of my shop reorganization. Holy crap what a job. Right now I’m in the middle of everything is everywhere trying to figure out a lot of the things you mentioned.

That’s why I love the French cleat system. Once it’s screwed to the wall I have a mental block that I can’t move that sometimes. When I know I just need to lift and move I’m more likely to flex things around.

Thank you for this, I'm stoked to rework the shop. I'm about to rip it all apart and start from scratch.
I need everything to function smoothly otherwise I'm frustrated and put off and it makes doing projects aggravating when I'm moving shit around and can't find the tools i need.
This video has given me some great tips on how to plan it out wisely so thanks man.

Absolutely the best table with multiple tools that I have ever seen several people say you’re a genius but I think you are above that. I’m guessing you must be an engineer or if you’re not recently I would’ve made a great one. Keep up the good work I subscribe to your channel you are going very well on the channel once enough people see what you’re doing congratulations videos coming. My son and I do some adventures that’s why you’ll see the channel that we have and I’ve been working in remodeling in custom woodworking project most of my life
