  • THX 1138 explained. In this THX 1138 review, we look at George Lucas's vision of the future before he made Star Wars. I compare and contrast the dystopian future in the movie with the dystopian present we tell ourselves we aren't living in, complete with the AI takeover, ChatGPT, and our own versions of Bug Brother. I theorize what messages we can take from this movie and how to understand its warnings.

    Before he made Star Wars, George Lucas directed and co-wrote THX 1138, a bleak vision of the future that mixes inspiration from 198 and Brave New World. It is wonderfully retrofuturistic with all the materials used in the movie made from items in the present 1971 world, including magnetic audio tape, punch card computers, CRT screens, and lots of glorious knobs and buttons. People are totally controlled and drugged. They are constantly surveilled, even or especially when confessing to the deity OMM in special bugged confession booths.
    The main character is THX, a robotics assembler. His roommate LUH changed THX's drugs to make him feel sexual feelings. They have sex and get caught and charged with criminal drug evasion. THX gets separated from LUH and sent to an open prison with endless white in every direction.
    Still feeling mentally awake since ceasing the mind control, and drugs, THX is able to break out of the prison with the help of a hologram from TV. Will he escape from his pursuers? If so, what is on the outside of the megacity, a place that is all he's ever known?

    This is one of my favorite future dystopian movies, as it perfectly portrays the dehumanizing effects of an industrial welfare police state.

      This appears to be the World they want. A gender neutral, mind controlled, techno autocracratic......... Termite Mound.
      I saw this when released. I was blown away. Unfortunately, the Establishment seems to want exactly this kind of Hellish Society. Worker Drones, forced drugging, total control of every single thing and every single person. Isolate people from nature and any real, natural human relationship. Mr Lucas created a dystopia that still has me pondering it over 50 years later.
      I guess some people watched this flick back then and thought: "Wow! What A Great Idea!"

    Lucas' great film. Downhill thereafter but we should not complain. THX will outlive much that passes for film these days.

    An absolutely excellent analysis and comparison of the world of THX 1138 and reality.
    Your video was the first time I had a complete A HA! moment concerning an analysis of this movie. The moment concerned the drugs leaving THX's body and the government losing control over him. I've watched the movie several times, and my perspective was always that of an all-knowing government controlling everything. But I didn't put it together that the "drugs" also allowed for mindlock. It's a world where even ones mind was not their own. People truly owned nothing... and they weren't happy or unhappy. They were drones. Period.
    AI is here. It is proliferating. Drugs are here, they're running through the course of our veins. Alleged wars and rivalries are here. EVERYTHING we type is able to be scrutinized. Everything we say can be listened to if we have one of this black screens within a microphones range. And...we all volunteer for it. An open-air prison.

    Great video; precise and no sugarcoating it. I think THX 1138 is the most accurate dystopia in fiction. However, if I may, I'll defend about 90% of the special edition changes in Star Wars. I think people forget how bad some of the original version looked.

    • @MetaCinema
      @MetaCinema  10 месяцев назад +2

      It's true that a lot of the original movies looked bad, but they should have just done a digitally remastered version to make it look good, rather than add distracting and unnecessary things in the background or make egregious changes like Greedo shooting first.

    If only Lucas had left this sublime, transcendent film alone, in original condition, the way WE experienced it back in the day. Yet again, he has ZERO respect for the viewer, if he did, at the very least, he’d offer both versions. Same for the original Star Wars.

    • @MetaCinema
      @MetaCinema  6 месяцев назад +2

      For some reason I thought my DVD set came with a theatrical as well as director's cut. While I personally am okay with the edits in the THX special edition, especially compared to Star Wars, this remains a strong case to keep hard copies of old media. Your own copy cannot be edited, censored, or destroyed and can be enjoyed for as long as the technology lasts.

Designed for dating sites as a sarcastic way of giving nothing away (read : why not just use your real name?) not knowing that malenesss and femaleness would be challenged in our education system, which in my opinion goes along with tramshumanism, which you allude to in your comments on 'mindlock' . Add to that my beloved son being born in 2016 - his name is Tex for clear reason as an homage, but never foreseeing the woefully extended lockdowns and censorship and worse that started in 2020. Great video, i disagree on the holograms though, i perceive them to be human, they are all one race and only seen by the majority on hologram projectors.. Entertainment 'drones.' the others - worker drones.
    To me the ending shows yes you can escape but whats is there to escape to?!

    • @MetaCinema
      @MetaCinema  5 месяцев назад +1

      I think I see what you're saying. THX and the others may as well be constructed bio-AI like the holograms are holo-AI, both made to be autonomous drones to fill a position in society. Makes me think we modern humans are similar drones. I like to think THX got out and there were others above ground, similar to how the shell is filled with shell dwellers. What kind of society they would form above ground, if any, is anyone's guess.

    • @55tranquility
      @55tranquility 2 месяца назад

      Thats my take, the holograms are human just like all the other humans - but in the world of THX1138 you are your job or designated role, thats it - no love, freedom, art, friendships, literature etc. So people whose job is to be a hologram are simply their jobs, live with all the other people whose job is to be a hologram, in a separate area and just do that.
