Clipless were a game changer coming from an age where we originally used Toe Clips on our pedals to stop our feet from slipping off the pedals when riding off road. Would have loved to see Rich using Toe Clips at the start and give a little history and context to the where the Shimano Pedal Design came from. With the advantages of suspension and better flat pedal design a few old mates have moved to back to flats (new flats) but i still like the security of a clip personally but with a decent cage for my enduro. It would be good to have a vid showing all aspects on a rooty trail, original slick flat pedals, toe clips, clipless, and new flats on rigid and modern suspension bikes,.

Man I'm with you on that, I'm afraid the language is changing from clipless to clips and the history may slip away for the most part and I think it takes away from those who rode clips in the day. I think clipless is more a snap ( like on a coat ) than a clip, by definition. Maybe snaps will be the language in the future 😀

I had a 24" road bike with toe clips when I was a kid in the 80s and then in the late 90s, when I got into MTB, I dabbled with clipless for a while (Shimano M747s on my hardtail and M636 on my full-sus 'DH' bike). It was great for the sort of riding I was doing then but not convenient for day-to-day riding, having to put on special shoes etc, so I ran flats again on my hardtail pretty quickly. In the early 00s I started riding, and then living, in the Alps and riding some very technical/exposed single track where sometimes you can only afford to fall one way! So long story short, I haven't ridden clipless on any bike since about 2003...

I've used to ride clips. Starting from REAL clips with straps and everything, then SPD for years. Then I've discovered trail riding which I've started with SPD as well but I''ve moved quickly to flat pedals. They give me much more confidence that if I screw up something I'll be able to bail instantly. Yes, it's more work with picking up rear wheel and with jumps but I won't ride clips on trail/enduro bike any more.

I learned to ride MTB on clipless pedals. Recently moved to flats just to learn a few skills but will go back to clipless the moment those skills are dialled in. A game-changer for me on clipless is the track stand. I learned to clip in and out while in a track stand. Especially if I'm riding with a group or racing, going into a track stand to scope out an obstacle or to wait for another rider to make some space is absolutely essential.

I’ve ridden clips for yonks - from back in the early days when the only choice was the original shimano spd’s . My tip is, if you can adjust the spring tension, wind them all the way to the loosest setting - easier to clip in and out when you’re learning. I cannot remember ever pulling out of the cleats when I didn’t want to. My other tip is to think more about just stepping sideways than rotating your heel out. Pretty soon it becomes just second nature.

Just switched my other bike to clipless. My fullsus is still on flat pedals. Can't wait to compare the two when it comes to going through rougher terrain. This has definitely been hard to get used being clipped to the bike but the difference when commuting is night and day.

having originally moved from road, where i used 'rat traps' to mountain biking in the mid 80's it was just natural to continue using them, paticularly on a ridgid bike (no suspension for me). when clipless came out it was an amazing step forward. i've tried flats but dont like the mess they make of your shins when your foot comes off.

I've been clipping in for 20yrs on my trail and XC bikes. I also have bikes with flats, but I don't have the desire to ride flats off-road unless it's a fat bike in the snow or a DJ. It's interesting to see how popular flats have become in the recent years, better shoes is probably the reason, since flat pedal tech hasn't changed much.

😂the first time I rode clipless pedals, I fell 14 times in an hour!😂 it did help me to become a better rider as I became stronger using them, I also became stronger physically with no wasted energy/movement in my pedaling.

One more tip with clipless cleat position - as a default position line the cleat up in line with the ball of your foot, at your foot's widest point. Start centrally on the sideways plane too, so you can find out how wide or narrow you need to make your stance. You can mark position with tipp-ex as a reference, too.

Clips are a game changer when it comes to riding really rowdy, techy stuff as you can focus on other things rather than worrying about your feet coming of the pedals.

38 years ago I had my first BMX race, been riding in the dirt ever since. Spent 20 of those years clipped in, and at every level of competition. Three years ago I went back to platforms and it hasn't held me back one bit. Sure, clipless has its advantages but now that I'm back to a more natural, joyful take on riding (and jumping bigger stuff again!!) I just don't like being latched to my bike anymore.

Tried clips...it was terrifying lol. Had issues being able to clip in and my ankle couldn't turn enough to unclip.. No go for me.... But I still wanted the advantages of being clipped in.. I had been eyeing a couple magnetic pedals.. magpeds and maglocks, but the reviews weren't that great and I didn't think they were worth it.. And then the Hustle REM pedals came out... HOLY CRAP TOTAL GAME CHANGER!!! These things are the best thing since sliced bread lol.. I would recommend the pedals to EVERYONE.. They are literally the coolest thing ever and instantly improves your riding.

I started riding clipless pedals when they were first introduced into bmx in the early 90’s and for that group I believe that they are a must. For mountain biking I think the risk doesn’t out weigh the reward. There are some phenomenal flat pedals out there that offer tremendous grip in wet or dry conditions. The one thing that swayed me was the fact that I have noticed that in sticky/ technical situations a person with flats can bail out with little to no injuries while a clipped in rider is most of the time along for the ride. Don’t just take my experience/word for it look at any mtb fail videos and find the worst crashes then see that they are most of the time clipped in. Most of my worst BMX crashes could have been avoided by simply riding flats.

I have rode clipless for ten years but with my new bike I had five ten shoes and stamp peddles
I could not get on with them
I found on the climbs flats were slower due to the piston type power transfer
Rather than the windmill type power transfer on clips
I feel more secure on descents and more confident due to being fixed on the bike
It’s personal preference which you choose but I have found which ever one you go to it’s not easy to change

I run clips it took five stitches to learn tho lol. Also maybe should have touched on spring tension for shamino and lower degree release cleats for crankbrothers is a good way to learn to unclip. What I did was just got some old worn out cleats off a mate and learnt with those and they were super easy to unclip.

When you ride with clipless Pedals you need to Practice first on finding your Point of balance on clipless pedals and Getting used to clipping off the Clipless pedals, The more you practice the more your muscle memory with clipping in and off the clipless pedals and locating your Cleat Pedals with your feet alone withouth looking at it will surely and Guarantee that it will be part of your second nature!
When you see an intersection and it's on red lights, prepare your non dominant foot to clip off from the clipless pedals and then of course brake naturally and stand your ground with your bike.
When you enter a sharp corner just like what you would do when your using a flat pedals, Light Braking and Naturally use your cornering skills that's it.

Hey Rich, I rode clipless for years (Shimano trails xt) and was a believer of them, in any condition but since owning an enduro e-bike now for 3yrs, (less poppy obviously) - have felt very comfortable with good shoe/ flat pedal combo.
Q: watch your clip just now, noticed you had same Shimano enduro shoes as mine (with chunky sole tread) and wondered if you had to modify cleat height (more than usual), to get clipped in? I have fairly new dh CB pedals like yours were in clip, but I REALLY struggle to clip in on the fly, if been unclipped. Got so bad I cut away the closest grey tread closest to the cleats, to help guiding on. Not much better. I hate the Shimano/CB combo, so have gone back to my 5/10s & flat pedals.
Your thoughts on this appreciated ( or anyone else)?

I once tried clips for two years, even competed in them, and in those two years the only thing I managed was to lose interest on MTB'ing.
Years later I bought a bike, but my feet will never see clips again...

In aviation they say you never stop flying the aircraft until it is on the ground whether it be a normal landing, emergency landing or crash you never stop flying the aircraft until it is on the ground. Same applies to MTBs, never stop riding the bike until the bike comes to a stop. This idea of taking a foot off when the ride gets wild is accepting failure and giving up. You can’t properly ride a bike with one foot off the pedal and the other foot/pedal pointed down just begging for a massive pedal strike and crash. If it all goes wrong and a crash is going to happen then it really doesn’t matter if your clipped in or on flats. Just my opinion…

Do not bother with clips unless racing. There is no better power transfer. There is no 'pulling' either, in TdF 100% of the power comes from pushing down the pedal. Use grippy shoes and good quality pedal pins. And focus on riding your bike

I hate clips, doesn't matter how easy I set them up to clip out, i can't do it quick enough, I also like having a foot free for the odd corner here or there and I can't unclip for that either,

Isn't it time the bike world stopped using the term 'clipless'? It's increasingly ridiculous as time goes on and the old straps recede into the past.

GMBN, GCN, etc. Isn't it time to STOP calling them "clipless" pedals? That's what the brilliant marketing department came up with in the 1980's. Do you use a "horseless" vehicle today? No horse? No clips? Get the point! Those marketing department guys from the 1980's have all retired.
I have "cleats" on my riding shoes and I "clip in" - just as I hear your presenters say much of the time.
I like the English language, but telling people how to "clip in" to "clipless" pedals is an oxymoron.
Be leaders - change the narative.

Why using clips is called "clipless"?

    • @maglapua9062
      @maglapua9062 2 года назад

Legend says that before clipless pedals there were pedals with a cage for toes, and those cages were called toe clips. Clipless pedals don't have them, which is why they're called clipless pedals.

Let's please stop calling them "clipless". I understand why they were initially named that, but when was the last time you saw the original clip type pedal and would need to draw a distinction between that and modern clip pedals? Let's just agree to call them clip pedals, please.

I have the Shimano Deore XT pedals on my Orbia Oiz. Clips on one side and flats on the other. Seems to work out so far so I have a choice without swapping out pedals. And, yes, I have toppled a few times. But getting better at staying upright.😁
