Perfect timing boys, just finished cleaning from our holiday weekend cookout here in the states. Now to relax to the soothing vocal tones of Chris and Pete!
I grew up near Farnborough in the 60s. They were testing the Concorde there at that time. You could hear it coming, and as a young boy, I would run to the window. It would fly over our house a few hundred metres up, nose cone down, and you could see the whole undercarriage. I don't have many memories from when I was that young, but that is one of them. That and the first moon landing. It really seemed that technology and hope were the future. Compared to then, nowadays, everyone is so blase.
In college, my roommate had a phase where for some reason he really loved Barbie Girl by Aqua. He played it so frequently that I started to get a migraine within seconds of hearing the song played, and that continued for several years after leaving college.
Hi Chris! A long time listener of your podcast here. Great content as always! One thing I noticed is that you keep calling 塩分チャージ "shiobun charge" (heard you say this in one of the previous episodes too), but it should be "enbun charge". "Shio" (kunyomi) 塩 becomes "en" (onyomi) in compound words. Cheers
As an American I enjoyed listening to the podcast, but I have to say watching it. I realize the expression that’s going into it because when I just hear voices seems pretty chill, but watching you guys, you can tell when you’re excited about certain things.
The Concorde was quite something. I wonder when we'll ever getiing something like it again. It'd surely be spectacular. I'm living very close to an airport and unfortunately I can't remember the old planes too well, but I'd love to see some of the old ones take off again rocking the homes beneath :) On the one hand side it understandable that things change, but on the other hand I get melancholic and sad when things change that, for example, I knew from my first time in Japan. I think 塩分 should be えんぶん unless they purposefully gave it a different pronunciation for that product :) The Pokemon lids are on my list for my next Japan trip lol The first time I came to Japan I lived in a part of Machida (Miwamachi) and sicne I wanted to visit that area again, I think I'll do a detour to the park in Machida, that has the Pokemon lids, too ^^ Pokemon Cards are quite big again recently. They're sometimes really hard to get which isn't very inclusive and therefore a little unfortunate. I'd also say Tokyo is probably the best city for Pokemon GO in the world. So many Pokestops and Gyms, and Pokemon spawns, too. Great episode :)
The Concorde at Manchester is kept in a hangar and you can do a tour to go on it and look around and can even go into the cockpit, well worth a visit if you are in the area
So to the last question about the song, my big brain response was a classical symphony, cause some of those are 1-2 hours, but an even bigger brain response is to compress a whole album or multiple albums into a single "song". (I mean, with the advent of some music streaming services, I have multiple albums and playlists downloaded onto my phone for when I don't have service.)
Great video Chris and Pete. Really listening and watching you both and sharing your experiences and thoughts about life in general and in Japan. Really enjoying your book Abroad in Japan and I spent 10 months in Japan on a working holiday visa and I stayed in Tokyo which was fun. Chris hope you enjoy the rest of your time in the UK and Pete I hope you have a wonderful holiday in Japan 😊. Looking forward to the next video
Chris, the reading of "塩分(salt, sodium)" is "enbun", not "shiobun". It's confusing because there are several ways to read the same kanji😅 There are so many kanji that even Japanese people can't read😆
Only one song for the drive to/from Sendai to/from Tokyo? I mean I think it would be more interesting (and tolerable for the driver/listener) what album people would choose. But if it could be only one track there’s “The Blue Room” by The Orb. That clocks in at about 40mins. Or super appropriate - Autobahn by Kraftwerk except that’s “only” 👀 22mins 43 secs. Pink Floyd fans would put Echoes on at 23:35. There’s a bunch of tunes around the 17 minute mark. Or if you didn’t want to repeat a song you could always listen to 7 Skies H3 by the Flaming Lips. A 24hour track which got issued in a flash drive in a limited edition of 13 that comes in a human skull! 😱
I remember the yo-yo craze! The old Yomega X-Brains, the ones that easily ‘slept’! Some of them had lights too, iirc. What a strange time we lived through
Hello Chris and Pete, I really enjoy your videos and podcasts, yup there's a "however" the voice activated camera switching during your podcast conversations makes me feel ill simillar to being seasick, is there any way to reduce the constant switching between you both. Can I suggest a split screen setup.
I've been to Lauterbrunnen twice and even stayed a few nights at a carless mountain village there. Chris is right, it's insane how gorgeous it is. That entire mountain area might be the most beautiful place in Europe for all I'm concerned. When you're tired of Japan and piled up enough YT money to afford it, ya gotta do Abroad in Switzerland.
Chris, if you are still unsure about where to spend the last leg of your stay, I could recommend Budapest. There is a Depeche Mode themed club/bar called 101, really fun place
The song that I have listened to on repeat while writing my masters has been Private Life by Oingo Boingo. But this may also have been the ADHD hyperfocus helping. You could also listen to one of the longer Yes songs. They top out at 20 minutes!
A part of me liked that this podcast was like a secret for the fans who sought it out, but glad you guys felt it worth the upgrade to video. Cheers, or whatever it is you limeys say
I had a similar thing happen to my plane a month ago on my way to Japan actually, we were landing and suddenly the plane accelerated violently and started ascending, just to circle around and try to land again, pilot didn't say anything for 10 minutes, so we didn't know what was going on, then they just announced that they were waiting for an all clear to land again
Hey Chris, if you want Spanish longevity maybe you should go easy on the fried chicken, as one of the main reasons for it is diet (the so-called Mediterranean diet, shared with Italy, Greece and many other countries, which is rich in olive oil, fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish and seafood, and low on red meat, processed stuff and refined sugars).
Concorde 😢 The criminal thing is the one at Heathrow is just abandoned and rotting away. If I remember it is full of old magazines just to weigh it down
I think sharla is having more success with introducing cats than pokemon to chris 😂 For those die hard pokemon fans I recommend a pilgrimage to the various cities that have pokemon centers over the sewer caps, and if you habe time, look at regions that have partnered with pokemon (e.g. iwate and geodude). If you stay in tokyo you can hang in a good mix of famous (e.g. shibuya) and more local (e.g. ikebukuro) neighbrohoods. If you go outside of tokyo you can find some hidden gems, such as kagawa, that have local culture but also a lot of pokemon merchandising even if you don't see a specific pokemon manhole cover! When pete lentioned reading chaucer in the schoolyard 😂
Switzerland and Norway have it good because they have a very small and productive population. The Brits have the same issue as most other large countries is that they have a very high population with a high unproductive groups in their society.
The secret to age isn't diet or any of that. It comes down to the same thing as everything, genetics. Specifically the Fox-O gene. Nova Science now did a GREAT special on it called "Can we live forever" hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson
@@g76agi nope, that's not how it works at all. if you eat healthy and exercise you'll live until around the average life expectancy for someone born the same year as you, your gender, your race and economic status/access to modern health care. you won't magically live over 100 years like the Okinawan people. For Canada, that's about early to mid 80's for men and mid 80's for women. If you eat poorly and get say type 2 diabetes take 5-10years off that number, most likely dying due to kidney failure. If you exercise in excess, like marathon levels you'll probably die early too from heart failure. If you consume too much alcohol most likely fatty liver etc. If you're taller than average you won't live as long, if shorter than average you live longer. Leading theory is your heart doesn't have to work as hard to pump blood, If you lead a stressful life, wipe 5-10years off, live a stress free life add a few on there. that doesn't stop external factors, like lead exposure in old US homes, or death due to something like an automotive accident. 1 out of every 107 people on US roads will die in a car accident. 1 in 7 will die of cancer. No amount of eating bitter melon will solve that. now using technologies like CRISPR to turn on those genes DOES work, but only in lab testing on worms so far. When the gene was turned on worms lived I think 3 times longer and also were MUCH more active/had the mobility of a young worm. the PBS Nova special I mentioned on it is great and on youtube.
Dont worry America is working on a new supersonic passenger plane.... hopefully this one doesn't end up in a field in south South Carolina. 😅 okay, you can worry a bit.
Maybe if they have sewage lids of fried chicken instead of Pokemon, Chris could be more interested! You could even burn calories while looking for the lids Poor Pete though, I suppose you could say his energy Petered out?
I have an autoimmune condition called Sjogrens Syndrome that causes me not to produce saliva. It’s torture! Don’t do it to yourself on purpose! My song for the drive would be Hi Ren by Ren (9 minutes).
You asked about what song could be listened to on repeat and both my husband and I started to sing The Proclaimers song titled "I'm gonna be" which was the famously repeated song from the sitcom How I Met Your Mother...don't worry, it comes around again 😅😉🤪
I'M HERE FIRST LET'S GOOOO POKEMON TALK AHSHDHZ Also in terms of the Spanish diet alot of it is due to alot more variation in there diet including fruit vegetables an fish with meat also in terms of the French women you have to realise the mortality rates she escaped were two world wars plus all the petrol she's enhaled and smoking on top of that an she lived such a long life apparently also I believe she had literally met Van Goh when she was very young!
oh come on Chris. there are poor families that can't afford flying for a vacation. I know you're a good guy but maybe you need to appreciate more how priviliged your life has been.
I hate to say anything negative about Abroad in Japan as it has always been my favorite RUclips channel, but I cannot sit through one episode of these podcastes. I cannot stand Pete's voice and his waffling style. Mores the pity because I am interested in the topics. As the Americans would say. "My Bad". Cheers from Oz
having the pod on youtube is probably the best decision from Pete.
Love that this is on RUclips now.
Where wast it before? On Spotify??
@@woundedidiot429 it was audio only for a few years on all the podcast platforms
Love that you have the podcast on YT!! Enjoy your UK trip both you and Sharla!

its funny, as someone living in Norway, I thought this about japan when I visited

The ending bit with the theme tune playing over Pete's waffling was on point, great way to end off the episode 👏
Took me a minute to realize you were talking about otomatone and not an automaton. I was imagining a wind-up robot playing Beat It
Definitely the best Japan YT. I'll be moving there soon hope to see chris there one day.
26:43 just a little fyi, I noticed you're calling the 塩分チャージ "Ship-Bun Charge" although its read more as "En-bun Charge" actually.. 😘
One song I can listen to on repeat is The Promise by When in Rome. I've been hooked on it lately. hahaha
Ideal way to start my journey to work. Pete have a good time on holiday in Japan!
Pete-san if you go to Fukuoka on your holiday, go to Lennon Bar and tell Hiroshi & Satomi, T-san from New Orleans sent ya! Enjoy your trip!!!

How many bloody podcasts did they film in advance? I swear it was like 4 podcasts ago they said Pete was gonna be in Japan next time XD
After 4 podcasts, pete finally finished his frappe. 😂
You're looking great guys! You never fail to make my days better.
There also was supposed to be an inspection of the run way before Concorde take off. Great shout out Mentour pilot.

Love when 2 people communicate with varying a pitch of YERRRRREAAAHHHHRRRMMMMAA 32:31
The video form of the podcast is really working out
If you are forced to listen to the same song for 4 hours on repeat, there is only one legitimate option:
4'33" by John Cage.
Chris, if you go to Duxford you can walk on the concord they went the fastest in
My choice for the one song would be FREEBIRD by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I am enjoying the book!
It's Koby from One Piece all grown up!👏🏾👏🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Chris please come to Spain. You can stay at our place here in Mallorca. You would love it.
Mallorca is so beautiful! Wish I could have stayed longer when I visited.
Spain is so damn gorgeous! 🔥
Pete, if you like pilot youtubers you'll like "74 gear". He is a pilot and he breaks down viral plane clips to explain what happened
Last question about song I would choose Michael Oldfield's Ommadawn.
Every prog rock fan who loves the 15+ minute songs laughing at the last question.

Why does this one episode have no audio? At first i thought maybe i had muted RUclips on accident, but no,, just this one episode has 0 sound.
Making Japanese summer more bearable? COOLISH! Always Coolish. It's a lifesaver.
i love Pete
Isn’t it obvious which song we should choose?
Kumamoto, the land of the hills and the grottos…
I will 100% be updating my Pokémon go app for November when I'm there 🤣🤣
Definitely do! Playing pokemon go in actually insane in Japan with how much there is.
Everlong was an incredible answer at 33:18
Pete don't forget you also look like CM Punk
have you try the pokemon hotel and would you do a vid on it
Don't slander Machida! It's out of the way of central Tokyo but there are plenty of parks, gardens and old preserved Japanese villages near Tsurukawa!
Concorde 😢 The criminal thing is the one at Heathrow is just abandoned and rotting away. If I remember it is full of old magazines just to weigh it down

Loving to see the follower count increase! gogogogo!
塩分 = enbun, not shiobun
Chris did anyone find ur figure at small worlds tokyo let us know and please add him or her in ur next adventure for challenge or etc.
Pokémon go in Japan best experience with this game
I miss the music at the beginning of your podcast!
What's the name of Pete's favourite bar near Shibuya? Alcoholic? I can't find anything about it
Bar Rockaholic, maybe?
