You have absolutely no idea of the dept of the rabbit hole you got into. Welcome to the Rush family.
RUSH is a rabbit hole. Guarantee you’ll find yourself checking out more.
Rush is the best band ever and ever will be period. Musicianship 200%, Lyrically 200% relevancy 200%, originality 200%, productivity 19 studio albums and over 190 songs , longevity 40+ years. This band is the real deal.
Agreed. Best band of all time.
Yes, agreed most definitely.
My top band of all time
Top 3 songs going deeper and off radio.
Analog Kid
Red Sector A
WItch Hunt
@@don-o-seven1437Those are 3 of my favourites as well, amazing songs!!!! I also love 'Losing it' and 'Available' which are often overlooked but seep meaningful songs with powerful lyrics
They are seriously that good, insanely good
Rush is a legendary Canadian band; a power trio. Lead singer/bass player/keyboard player is a man, Geddy Lee. The guitarist is Alex Lifeson. Geddy and Alex met in junior high and became best friends, and then bandmates in one of the most renowned rock bands ever. Drummer Neil Peart joined them in 1974 and that lineup remained until the band's final tour in 2015. He also wrote their lyrics. Sadly, Neil Peart died of brain cancer in 2020. He was known as one of the premier rock drummers; the whole band was virtuosos on their instruments. I highly suggest checking out some live performances from them. Specifically, check out 'Working Man, Live from Cleveland. Also, I suggest the music video for 'Subdivisions', where you can see how Geddy Lee moves from synth work to bass to singing, something he did often. Rush is a deep rabbit hole, as they had a 40-year career and spanned so many different sounds.
Please don't forget John Rutsey.
You should also check out Xanadu (live) Exit Stage Left on the StickHits YT channel. It has been remastered and truly shows how versatile they all are. Alex plays a double neck guitar (12 string on top, 6 on bottom) and plays bass pedals with his feet here and there. Geddy plays a double neck (4 string bass on top and 12 string guitar on bottom) along with keyboards and synth plus bass pedals (singing too!) Neil has a massive drum set that is surrounded by every imaginable percussion instrument and he plays all of it. Amazing!
A handful of good 3 man bands out there. These 3 are the best. Deep drive, can't go wrong! If they were on stage with a giant mayonnaise jar behind them, fans would say "That's Rush for ya"
CFNY 102.1 … The Spirit of Radio
@@Sherwoody You bet! Best radio when I lived in Toronto.
Nobody compares to them . Hands down. So great seeing newbies reactions to their music. I was so blessed being a highschooler in the 70's. Our music was so incredible.
The pirate radio image is a reference to a Pirate Radio station set up on an old Cargo ship in the North Sea in international waters by a group of Disgruntled DJ's who were sick of being told what to play by their stations. Radio Caroline it was called, there have been films made about it!
Donna Halper was the first DJ to play Rush on the radio, in Cleveland, Ohio. She played Working Man from the album Rush. The phones rang off the hook!🎸🤘
"YYZ" live in Rio is far and away the best Rush video to react to, be prepared to have your mind blown.
Right after 'Xanadu' from "Exit...Stage Left" of course!
Ahhh our three Canadian masters! 45 yrs of back to back awesomeness! ONLY 3 😂
Xanadu, 2112, freewill.
CHEERS
well said ie. only 3?!?!......you could ask 20 people what their favorite Rush song is and you could get 20 different answers!.........and I for one would agree with all 20 of them!
@@BugsFan2112 Yep. A 40 year catalog, and out of 'em all, there MIGHT be 5 or 6 "clinkers" rattling around. Even when they weren't absolutely spectacular, they were damn good.
Neil wrote The Spirit Of Radio as a tribute to local radio station CFNY, which he'd often listen to on his morning commute; the changeups were meant to simulate listening to the radio in 1980, when you could find many different genres of music with just a turn of a dial. If you'd like to see another top performance from the same album, I'd like to recommend Freewill from Exit Stage Left. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦
🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
Still on the car radio dial
Yes it's a homage to old FM radio before it was taken over by top 40 radio and would play 12 minute songs
It was the tag line for CFNY I had a sun visor strip with it on it on my 81 Accord
That's a good 1:)
Rush is a trio made up of Geddy Lee on Bass, keyboards, and lead vocals, and yes it's a he. Alex Lifeson on Guitar, and Neil Peart(RIP) on Drums, Percussion, and he was the awesome lyricist, writing many of their tremendous hit songs. It's always been mind boggling to me that three guys could make such incredible music that seemed to be from an entire symphony orchestra.
One of the first songs of the '80s...it was a great time to be 16!
1. Hemispheres (20ish minutes)
2. 2112 [Twenty-one Twelve] (18ish minutes)
3. Xanadu (12ish minutes) LIVE, TORONTO, 1981!
It's SO hard to pick from their "short" songs!
Wasn't supposed to be "Live Montreal, 1981"?
Maybe so. I mean the video from Exit Stage Left, wherever it was filmed
I was asking because its the only version I ever watched. Always glad to discover a new gem!
Of you five down the Rush rabbit hole you'll find some of the best music you've enter heard. I had the pleasure of seeing them 53 times including the final show at the Forum. Liked and subscribed and looking forward to your journey.... Prayers up Brother ❤️🙏
RUSH is an awesome Canadian band, with a huge dedicated following and great songs. Their drummer writes all the words. You have to watch a video of Neil Peart (RIP) solos about 13 minutes of amazement.
Best rock drummer ever RIP Neil Peart!
- As a kid of the 60s, we could call the local radio station (WINX 1600 AM) (on a rotary dial, corded phone), request a favorite song, then wait for the DJ to announce your request, along w/ your name - you could even dedicate the song to somebody special :)
- Of course, kids of today will be reminiscing nostalgically 60 years from now about something they enjoyed that is no longer a thing. Life goes on :) ...
I see you SW Florida
I've never felt as old as I do right now. My first concert was Rush on the Signals tour, March 4 1983 with Golden Earring as the opening act. I'll never forget they opened the show with The Spirit of Radio, it was truly a life changing moment for a 14 year old. You've got a LOT of catching up to do, enjoy the ride!
I'd give my left nut to have gone to that concert or the Moving PIctures tour. I didn't get my first Rush concert until Power Windows, but hey, I'll take it!
Yes, Geddy is male. And Neil sadly was only 67 when he passed in 2020.
My current top 3...
1. The Pass
2. The Garden
3. Dreamline
(oddly enough, I'm partial to the latter half of their career)
That is slightly odd.😉
"The Pass" is one of my favorites as well. It seems like a lot of fans love the early stuff, and that's great. However, there's a lot of excellent stuff throughout. "The Garden" is a perfect song to end their final album.
I love Rush and this is my favorite!
Try a live version of these 3…incredible rabbit hole 👍
Singer - Geddy Lee (dude)
You’ve dipped your toe into the Rush rabbit hole. Time to take the dive.
Favorites:
Xanadu - Exit…Stage Left (Live, 1981), 4K version
Jacob’s Ladder ( live or studio)
2112 (the entire 7-part suite)
Freewill
The Garden ( Clockwork Angels tour)
La Villa Strangiato
Once you do two or three of these, you’ll have no problem finding that the entire catalog is incredible
They’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Alex Lifeson is a guitar God, Neal Peart one of the best drummers ever and Geddy Lee (real first name Gary) one of the all time amazing bass players. Geddy also plays keys and is the vocalist. His mom has quite an accent, she’s from Poland and so Gary came out sounding like Geddy. Lee is actually his middle name and his parents are Jewish Holocaust survivors. They were born in Warsaw and later grew up in Wierzbnik. They survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II. They were in their teens when they were initially imprisoned at Auschwitz. After a while his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. When the war ended four years later, and the Allies liberated the camps, Morris set out in search of Manya and found her at a Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp. They married there and eventually emigrated to Canada.
I come form the 70's 80's era. you have entered a whole new universe. Rush is a trio. Geddy Lee plays bass, sings and keyboards......all at once!!
Top 3: 1) Subdivisions 2) spirit of radio 3) Closer to the Heart
Top 3- the camera eye, the trees, closer to the heart
1) 2112 2) Tom Sawyer 3) Subdivisions
Limelight, Passage to Bangkok, Anthem
Absolutely my favorite band!! Right now I can't stop watching Working Man - Live In Cleveland
Right?! Working Man, live in Cleveland and YYZ live in Rio....guaranteed to put you in a great mood!
I first "discovered" Rush in 1976, and saw them for the first time, in the first rock concert I ever attended in 1977, when I was 15, on their "A Farewell to Kings" tour. I've lost count of the number of times I saw them live, between 20 and 25 times, including their final tour in 2015. Rush concerts were unbelievable, their energy and power, combined with their music, and a healthy dose of three best friends doing what they loved, along with terrific senses of humor, made the concerts amazing events. At the end of the concert, EVERYONE came out exhausted, feeling excited, and amazed at what we saw. Nobody put on a show like Rush, where they left everything on-stage. Though Rush has retired (RIP Neil Peart,) there are many examples of their live performance recordings to enjoy, along with their recorded albums, over their 40 year career.
Been a Rush fan and have seen them live 3 times over the last 40 years. My top 3 Rush songs would be La Villa Strangiato studio version live,Working Man live in Cleveland,Xanadu live from Exit Stage Left. Enjoy the ride.
Rush is Timeless.
RUSH - Xanadu LIVE 1981...youll love it
My top 3 Rush songs are as follows #3-Spirit of the Radio, #2-Red Barchetta, #1-Tom Sawyer. But that could change from day to day as my mood changes.
Been a Rush fan since 1978. My top 3?
1- La Villa Strangiato
2- YYZ
3- Red Barchetta
Alex Lifeson(guitar) has heavily influenced me in what I play on guitar, his tone, how he often play open strings. They're geniuses.
John Rutsey was drummer on their first album (which featured "Working Man"), but his diabetes was giving him problems to where he wasn't going to be able to tour, so he resigned. The band quickly found their new drummer and primary lyricist - Neal Peart.
This is not the whole story. While diabetes had a play, John was not interested in going in the direction of progressive music that Geddy & Alex were. They were listening to Yes, Genesis and King Crimson. John was listening to Zep and Bad Company.
I think Geddy would site musical differences as the number one reason for John leaving the band.
Welcome to the greatest 3 piece band of all time. Canada's best gift to the world, ever! Enjoy your trip!!
As a Canadian I grew with Rush. They are astonishing musicians
Subdivisions, Working Man, and Free Will.
The singer was male, Geddy Lee. He was also the base player and he was also the keyboard player. Check out their official video for "Tom Sawyer".
Welcome to Rush! Three of the most talented musicians you’ve never heard of. Geddy Lee (is a male), vocals, bass guitar and keyboards. Alex Lifeson, guitar shredder, and The Professor, Neil Peart; in the top 5 best drummers of all time (RIP). Check out Tom Sawyer, The Trees and Limelight. Great introductions to Rush. My favorite tunes are probably Witch Hunt, Red Sector A, and Working Man. Though it’s impossible to pick just three!
Michael, welcome to the amazing band called Rush. The original album just hit 50th anniversary on March 18th. Titled RUSH. The Band formed in Sept. 1968. Michael, I recommend listening to Working Man from this album. It's the first Rush song to be played on the Radio by a female D J in Cleveland Ohio in March of 1974. Donna Halper. Donna is friends with Geddy and Alex to this day. She helped them get a Star on the Walk of Fame. Donna was at the ceremony and did a speech. Donna helped in getting Rush inducted into the Rock in Roll Hall of Fame. I've been a Rush fan for 45 years. Geddy Lee is the Lead singer & Bass player, Keyboard player. music writer. Alex Lifeson & Geddy Lee have been best friends since they were 15 years old. John Rutsey was Rush's original drummer. Rutsey is only on their original album. John left the band in June of 1974. Neil Peart audition for Geddy & Alex and nailed the audition. Top 3 Rush songs. 1. Natural Science 2. Jacob's Ladder 3.Freewill. 4. Anthem 5. The Garden. 6. Between Sun and Moon. 7. Bravado. 8. Pass 9. Witch Hunt. 10. La Villa Strangiato it's a mind blowing 9-minute instrumental. Alex Lifeson wrote this song at age 24 or 25 from a reincurring nightmare. I recommend the Live performance 1978 Pink Pop Festival. I think it's the best Prog Rock live performance ever. 🤘
If you are a reader you could Get a book Geddy Lee wrote last year called "My effing life" a book of memoirs about his personal life, his 40 year career with Rush, and his relationship with his band mates. All starting with his jewish history and parents who are concentration camp holocaust survivors. GEDDY (real name Gary) is currently on tour promoting his book.
Was a book I really enjoyed !
@@Nana_Reads not just a great read but a treasure trove of pictures as well. 😊
Use to run into Geddy and Alex on their walks. Fine gentlemen. Geddy, the bass and singer, loved a band called YES and a song called Roundabout is a great intro. 🙏🍁
Growing up in the 80's I was a Rocker, saw AC/DC live, as well as Judas Priest, Metalica, AC/DC, Megadeth, Van Halen, ZZ Top, KISS, Pink Floyd, but after about 1995 the ONLY band I ever paid to see live was RUSH. Saw them about a dozen times live. Amazing experience.
Welcome to Rush, my friend. This is a perfect song to start your journey down the Rush rabbithole and you should do yourself a favor and check out their live performance of Xanadu from 1981. That will show them for the masters they were, live and creating the most remarkable rock music ever. Enjoy.
RIP Professor
You are with your wife and daughter, and you will never be forgotten. ❤
45+ years of exceptional music ... enjoy the ride!! Geddy Lee is most assuredly a guy, but with a very unique voice that was perfect for Rush (cat with his tail on fire)
1) The Fountain
2) The Weapon
3) The Garden
My all time favorite band! You NEED to watch a video of one of their live performances.
For one, the singer Geddy Lee is a guy. Neil Peart is one of the best drummers of all time, Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. One of the best rock bands of all time who have made a big influence for many other artists. The singer is also a master class bass player. Must do more rush. My favorite songs by Rush are:
1. Red Barchetta
2. Freewill
3. 2112
4. Spirit of Radio
5. Farewell to Kings
Sorry, that was 5 songs. Couldn't help it. They have so many great songs. Good rabbit hole to venture into. Gret reaction.
U need to watch Neil Pearts 9 minute long drum solo live in Frankfurt Germany. He is not only considered the greatest rock drummer of all time by many. He also wrote all the bands lyrics and also know to include at least 9 time changes in every song.
Greatest band ever. Nothing compares to Rush. 1) Time Machine 2) Red Barchetta 3) Free Will. There are so many that could be top 3: YYZ, Xanadu, Closer To The Heart, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Working Man, 2112 album, the list goes on and on and on 😀 A Proud Canadian!
Great reaction!!! Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever (quite frankly top five best band ever). Pure musicianship and artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them. Once you watch their early videos (mid 70's to early 80's) and live shows later in their career (2002 to 2015)...you'll really appreciate their style. The got better with age.
Welcome aboard the Rush Train!!! No turning back!!
I would suggest the songs below that you haven’t reacted to yet in adding to your Rush journey and reactions. All of these are absolutely fire!!!
- La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!!
- Working Man... Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (original studio version was in 1974)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's.
- YYZ…live from Rio in 2002 (instrumental)…original was 1981
- Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977.
- Tom Sawyer - studio version 1981. Geddy's voice was remarkable!!!! A good live version would be from the 1981 Exit Stage Left tour (younger days) or Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (older days)
- Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
- Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
- Limelight...studio version - original was 1981.
- Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
- Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
- The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012 - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
- Fly by Night - original was 1975
- Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
- Malignant Narcissism and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
- Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.
You will enjoy Rush.
You will, in all probability worship Rush.
They are a band for musicians.
Welcome to Rush! Three master musicians from Toronto, Canada
They had a 40 plus year career and changed their music with the times but always sounded like Rush.
Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards (Yes, he is a dude with a very high unique voice).
Alex Lifeson guitar, mandola and later keyboards
Neil Peart drums, percussion and main lyrist
Unfortunately Neil Peart passed from brain cancer in January of 2020. He is considered one of the best drummers in rock.
You must watch them live!
Xanadu from Exit Stage Left
Working Man live in Cleveland
Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto
Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour.
Cheers 🇨🇦
Rush is awesome. My top 3 change every day. Right now I'd go with:
1) Tom Sawyer
2) Working Man
3) La Villa Strangiato (instrumental- but what an instrumental)
What, not 2112???
Throw away tom sawyer, RED BARCHETTA KILLS!!!
Sorry to be that guy but you made a little typo there I noticed you accidentally typed 3 in front of La Villa Strangiato (I think you meant 1 right? - HTH)
NO!
#1 Time and Motion
#2 Territories
#Tom Sawyer
Lol welcome to the RUSH rabbit hole. This band has literally touched millions of lives. Enjoy your new journey! 😊👍🎸🎶🎹🎶🥁🎶. Oh yeah the jar of mayo makes me a little nervous lol 😉
Tom Sawyer and Xanadu are key songs to listen to next
Subscribing just to see more RUSH. It's so rare to see someone who gets it right off the bat. Three of the GOAT together with forty years of material to go through, and you just found it. Looking forward to the rabbit hole. You can't go wrong.
The main guitar riff for this song was Alex capturing the feel of what it sounded like to scroll through an old analog radio dial.
You are gonna LOVE this band.... this is one of dozens of masterpieces, just happens to be their most popular. We've done oh 30 Rush reactions if you're looking for inspiration :)
Hey my friend, I saw RUSH in the late 80s in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada! Best live rock band ever! check out xanadu ( live in Montreal 1981)
here's a take for you; the apps you talked about, YOU must load the lists, the radio was random and yea, you got really happy at times
You have entered the Rush rabbit hole my friend…….and it’s a deep one! You haven’t even scratched the surface. Enjoy the trip, you’ll be in the Rush Army in no time!
OMG if you like being surprised by songs, you'll LOVE Rush. They are all masters of their instruments and incredible writers, composers, and performers.
"The Big Money", "Red Barchetta", and "The Pass". My suggestions to you, sir. ^_^
Welcome to the Rush fandom.
May God have mercy on your soul! ^_~
You may be about to embark on Rush journey......try these three: Tom Sawyer off of Moving Pictures, YYZ off of the same album, Freewill live from Snakes & Arrows tour.....you will be hooked!!!! Oh, and Subdivisions live from Snakes tour as well!!!!....incredible!!!!!
If the song is an ode to the radio, this video is a love poem to all their fans. It’s inside reference after reference all the way thru
🤭 Picking a favorite Rush song is like picking your favorite child, 🤗 so instead, I'll pick 3 Rush songs that left a mark on me after being a fan for over 40 yrs & seeing them pretty much every time they played NY/NJ area.
1) Anthem: Played 1st time I saw them when they opened for Kiss
2) La Villa Strangiato: 1st time I 🤯 paid attention to Alex for an entire show
3) Headlong Flight: Performed live by a bunch of old guys who look like my bus driver, but sounded like they did 🤯 when I saw them open for Kiss. This song off their last Album sounded like it would fit perfectly on their 1st and/or 2nd Album.
(Special Mention) The Garden: For reminding me Rush could still be pretty as well as gritty. 😍 And Alex Lifeson plays keys Live on this, instead of Geddy Lee. 🥰🐰
After making music for over 40 years, it is hard to choose just 3 fav Rush songs. I was listening to this band when none of my friends were...guess they just didn't get the complexity. Neil Peart's lyrics are key...great storytelling, so inspiring & thought provoking, unlike other rock. But 3 songs to check out for sure are: Xanadu (1977), Red Barchetta (1981), and Dreamline (1991) to give you a little taste from the first 3 decades...
Cansdian icons...we love them 😘🇨🇦
Great, great (!) initial impression!! OMG, spot-on, sir! This song came out in 1980 and I was in High School and I had been a Rush fan since 1977. I. Will. Never. Forget the first time i heard The Spirit of Radio, on my Mom's rinky-dink radio, down in our kitchen! I was waiting for my ride to come pick me up for school and I heard the new Rush song on the radio!! Why was that so significant? Because, before the 1980 album "Permanent Waves", Rush was NOT in much rotation with the radio stations, except for one song -- called "Closer to the Heart" -- which you could catch every now and then, if you were lucky. But, all of the sudden, here is Rush crushing it all over the radio! I could not believe my ears!! I was so fired up that day, that it's something I will never forget! Awesome song, awesome band, awesome musicianship, song-writing, lyric-writing, live show, Bass, Drums, Guitars, Vocals, and Keyboards!!! They are the GOAT!
Rush songs in this order:
- Free will
- La Villa Strangiato
- Limelight
- 2112 [Full album]
- Red Barchetta
As you probably have been told, Getty Lee is a male singer (and the bassist/keyboardist for Rush) with the most incredible voice. Listen to his voice isolated on tracks if you ever have the opportunity. It’s quite amazing.
The drummer, Neil Peart, passed away in 2020 and was regarded as the best drummer in the world. I’m sure you’re getting an earful from many people. Enjoy.
Welcome to the world of Rush
Nothing goes better with Hellmann's Mayo than the first taste of Rush!
They are Legends!! Great rabbit hole! Check ‘em out LIVE!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
One of the world's largest selling music acts of all time.
This came out in 1980. The whole album blew my mind. I had just started drumming the previous year and Neil showed drumming at s different level. Late 79s and early 80’s Rush were at the pinnacle of rock. Geddy Lee said the tried to throw a lot of influences at the wall with this song. Glad you noticed the reggae.
I refuse to believe you never heard of Rush. Absolutely refuse lol. That being said, awesome reaction! There is no way to pick 3 top songs. Every song is 🔥 And what's with the mayonnaise? You're a trip dude.
If you were being serious about how you know you are going to love them then you are correct. You are in for a treat.
In the 70's and 80's, you didn't have to wait to hear a particular banger. Just pick out any month, of any year in that 20 year span, and listen to the top 20. Radio ruled in those days and Rush was just one in a flood of great music.
Welcome to the RABBITHOLE my friend! Rush is the GREATEST 3 PIECE in HISTORY! 19 Original Studio Albums, and a 'Cover' Album, plus 11 or so official 'Live' Albums/Videos. I saw them 6 times between 1986 & 2015, and for the record... The Lead Singer, Bassist, and Keyboardist GEDDY LEE is one COOL ASS DUDE!!
To pick only three Rush songs is to do a disservice to dozens of top-notch recordings. For my mood at the moment I'd say The Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions and 2112 - but you have to do all seven chapters of it. Truly a masterpiece.
My first concert 🔥🔥! The pot smoke was so thick and they were awesome and we were in a little auditorium on New Years Day! Try “Tom Sawyer” or “2112”.
RUSH…….Doing more with less since the 60’s. Tom Sawyer…Limelight……Subdivisions…
Welcome to the Rush fanbase! You're lucky, I wish I could hear all their songs again for the first time. If I can only recommend 3 songs, I guess it would be Subdivisions, Freewill, and Tom Sawyer
Just scratching the surface of a massive iceberg with this one.
You're right about one thing. Rush IS from the future!
Great reaction to my #1 favorite Rush song!
I've always been a fan of drummers, and to me there's never been a more complete drum virtuoso in the last half century of my life than The Professor, Neil Peart. Watching a video of one of his solo drum performances will blow your fricking mind. Guitarist Alex Lifeson is also an amazing guitarist, doing some of the most amazing licks so effortlessly. Rush is amazing.
And, yeah, as a kid in the late 70s and a teen in the 80s, the radio was the main source of music since the only way to get music on demand was to buy a 45 rpm single, an album, a cassette, or even an 8-track at the store (I can still tell you the first of each media I bought: 45: CW McCall's Convoy in '76 when I was 8. Album: Queen's The Game in '81. Cassette: Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in '84. CD: Tin Machine's Tin Machine in '88) and as a kid few of us had the money for much of a collection. So the radio was on near constantly as we waited for a great song. When one came on we'd dive over whatever was in our way to turn the volume up (until our parents complained it was too loud and we'd deafen ourselves). I still love listening to the radio for those feelings of elation when one of my favorites would come on. Radio was a constant in our youth for sure, and it was everywhere in the summers especially. 🙂
Dude, you've been introduced to the greatest rock threesome of all time. Their technical virtuosity, compositional genius, and philosophically deep lyrics (mostly written by drummer, Neil Peart, an innovative master) put them above all other bands of their time . . . that, and their loyalty to each other and their fans explains why their fanbase is so loyal to the band. My suggestion is that you start learning about Rush with "Fly By Night," their '74 album, and work your way forward through "2112," "A Farewell to Kings," "Hemispheres," "Permanent Waves" (from which Spirit of the Radio comes), "Moving Pictures," and "Signals," and continuing from there. They had a 40+ year career together, and were THE band with which I went from youth to adulthood. I hope you'll do more reactions to Rush in the future.
Who are they? Only the best live band and greatest power trio on the planet for more than four decades. The holy trinity from Toronto are just next level both musically and lyrically, they were the real deal. 😊 Any of Rush's 168 song discography are worth a listen to, Spirit Of The Radio is pretty much standard fare for them, but the essentials for someone new to the band are Xanadu from Exit Stage Left, La Villa Strangiato the official version, Working Man Live in Cleveland, YYZ live in Rio and of course Tom Sawyer. Rush is also known for side long concept pieces like 2112, Cygnus X-1 book ll Hemispheres and The Fountain of Lamneth.
Top 3:
1. Cygnus X-1 part 2
2. New World Man
3. La Villa Strangiato
"A passage to Bangkok" and "Red Barchetta" are a couple of my favorites. But there's also one of the best instrumentals of all time "YYZ"!
All the Worlds a Stage- Live- Rush June 11, 12, 13, 1976 Recorded at Massey Hall, Toronto, Ontario, Canada🇨🇦🎶
You nailed it when describing how different it was back then. Hearing your favorite song and rushing over to hit record on the tape recorder!
I have been a rush fan since 3rd grade, 1981. My top 3 Rush songs right now are:
1. Red Barchetta
2. Afterimage
3. The Analog Kid (live)
To be honest you can do any song from moving Pictures and most songs from Permanent Waves albums, and you will be fine. I like all the songs on both albums, but a couple of PW might not be to everyone's taste.
Rush is awesome. Enjoy your Rush journey, you'll love their songs 🎵
hey Christian brother, I really appreciate your reaction. I've been following them since the 70's and saw them once. Looking forward to a second Rush reaction..
This video was planned as part of the fortieth anniversary of the album on which it was the first track. By the time it was made their legendary drummer/lyricist, Neil Peart (pronounced P-ear-T, rather than P-ur-T) had succumbed to the invasive brain cancer, glioblastoma. So, what you've seen here is essentially a biographical look at Neil's career in music (which included a two-year false start in England before he auditioned for Rush and spent the remaining almost-50 years with his musical brothers, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson).
Geddy and Alex grew up in suburban Toronto and Neil grew up about an hour's drive to the southwest (not too far from Niagara Falls). Given their talents and technical abilities, this trio was a super-group before super-groups became a real thing.
Three songs only? That's impossible, given how Rush published 19 studio albums plus another dozen live albums to boot. In fact, when we include the various compilation albums that came out from time to time (typically to remind fans of older albums), Rush stands 3rd (behind only the Beatles and the Rolling Stones) for most consecutive gold or platinum album releases.
Be that as it may, I'll give it a shot:
1. Hemispheres, Books I and II (1977 & 1978) okay, so that's actually two songs, but they were obviously meant to be heard as one!).
2. Natural Science (1979)
3. Analog Kid (1982)
4. Headlong Flight (2012)
PS - We have an aversion to the number 3 up in Canada (not really, but just please roll with the joke), so I had to add a fourth song to balance things out...
Congrats! You have 40 years worth of RUSH to enjoy! People can list the top bands in various orders, but RUSH is always in the top 5. Three of the best ever at their respective instruments!
Neil Peart!! The most epic legendary best drummer to ever live! RIP Neil! Loved Rush since 1987 (14 year old kid in Texas back then)
The hand motion is about the ever present yacking from the radio. The transition to regae symbolizes turning the knob to another station. The end is what is all about: MONEY (salesmen)
Top 3 Rush songs, LaVilla Strangiato, Subdivisions & Xanadu
May i suggest you checking out their live performances. Its crazy that Rush was three musicians but had the musical ability that you would have guessed it was a four or five piece. The singer balanced between bass and keyboards and the drummer wrote almost all their lyrics.
Best Rush songs? All of them... A passage to Bangkok... Witch hunt... The camera eye. Those three are eye opening and short introductions to the most complex trio in the history of rock. You can get into the 12-20 minute songs later.
