I've grown them both, and agree with you I love the tartness of the Sun Gold. I grew the Sun Sugar last year and it did keep giving me buckets and buckets of tomatoes. I still dream about the Sun Golds because they give the tart sweetness I love.

Thanks for the review. I live in the high desert area of California and my temps during the summer are pretty much at 100+ during the day. With shade cloth and rain gutter grow system watering consistently, my tomatoes are in 12 gallon NSF totes with a custom soil blend. With very little rain during my growing season to cause a sudden water uptake and skin burst, my sungold tomatoes still would split even as I picked them. I've done my own side by side and have switched over to the sunsugar for my go to variety. Every area is different and watering schedules change fruit growth and issues, so for me, it's sunsugar. Happy Gardening.

Thanks a bunch for the detailed information on why you prefer sunsugar. I'm sure others who live in your area will appreciate it too. I agree....every area is different. Glad you can at least grow one of them in that kind of heat. We usually get our share of 100 degree days during July and August. We've had a short break for the heat, but they say it's coming back this weekend.

I'm in zone 9 TX. I grew Sun Gold for the first time this year. I grew it in a 10-gallon potato grow bag, which is taller and wider than a regular 10-gallon grow bag. The plant is growing really well but is not that productive. The tomatoes are smaller than a regular size cherry tomato. I keep a consistent water/fertilizing schedule, and the tomatoes haven't split. The flavor is a little more tangy than sweet. Sounds like the Sun Sugar might be more to my liking for the flavor and size. Will grow it next year. Thanks for the comparison video.

One of the two has a thinner skin but I can't remember which one. BTW, I grow so many of these and hate to see so much as one go to waste. I cut them in half (especially the ones that have already split) and dehydrate them on an air dehydrator. Then, they do really well on salads, taste almost like raisins when they're dehydrated, so yummy!!! Also, you can dehydrate the Juliets that same way, though I add salt to the flesh side up on the dehydrator. When they're done, you can seal them up and freeze them or I throw a bunch in a jar of garlic and olive oil.

Never grew sun sugar, but I did grow Sungold. Sungold was my favorite for many years until I found honeydrop. Honeydrop is sweet with citrusy notes, just like sungold, but it is shaped more like a grape. It is open-pollinated so I can save the seeds. Honeydrop tomatoes don’t seem to split as easily as Sungold. Just my two cents…
