    Hello, and welcome back to another video on my channel, and the first of my extra Sunday videos for December! This week's train trip report video is a special one, as I am reviewing the brand-new Greater Anglia Class 720 'Aventra' unit by Bombardier Derby, on the Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street route.
    This train only entered service a few days ago, so it is fresh into service. This fleet forms a large chunk of Greater Anglia's full stock replacement, with 133x five car units being ordered for routes between London and Cambridge, Hertford East, Ipswich, Clacton-on-the-Sea, and Southend Victoria. The trains are 100mph (160km/h), and are built to be very high-capacity, one point that they certainly got right! They are part of Bombardier's 'Aventra' family, which has already received orders for over 2500 carriages in the UK - convenient as the trains are built at Bombardier's Litchurch Lane plant in Derby, England.
    The route for today's trip starts at Southend Victoria, the station for Greater Anglia's services in Southend, and just a short walk away from the competing c2c station of Southend Central. Quickly after departure, the train arrives at Southend Airport, which is almost in walking distance from the centre of Southend. After passing through many suburban stations, including Wickford (the junction for the Southminster branch that will also soon see these Class 720 units), we join the Great Eastern Mainline at Shenfield. After this it's a fast run towards London, arriving into Stratford (Regional), one of the biggest interchanges in London, before finally terminating at London Liverpool Street.
    Unfortunately the SD card used while recording this video corrupted, leaving some strange artifacts during playback, and because some footage was lost completely, some loss of continuity. However, thanks to CC licensed images online, I was still available to make something out of what I had. Special thanks to the following files:

    I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised by these fantastic units, find out why in the video!

    These will be a huge improvement. It’s a shame that every single great eastern franchise has neglected their stock. The Renatus upgrade to the 321s I feel came way too late. For example, SWT upgraded their 455s at least 10 years ago to a higher spec with upgraded traction equipment etc
    But I sense those airline seats won’t be popular.

    • @SuperalbsTravels
      @SuperalbsTravels  3 года назад +3

      Yeah the row of three airline seats is a somewhat scary thought.

    • @quicksesh
      @quicksesh Год назад +1

      the only way you'd make the 321 appealing was to burn them to the ground, the 360's were nicer but space wasn't used very well. Yes the 3 in a row seating does prove challenging on very busy trains, but as the journeys are normally short it is bearable but the addition of the door area jump seats means if you are smart enough you can blag one of those instead.

    Good to hear about the excellent ride quality. The Hitachi 800s suffer from the DfTs absurd specification of a 26 metre coach length which on tight curves would foul the loading gauge resulting in the hard suspension which had to be employed to prevent this. Muppets!

    Hello there, the timetable frequency for the London Liverpool Street - Sothend Victoria is a train every twenty minutes, which is obviously three trains per hour. It would be interesting to compare both c2c and Greater Anglia services on the London - Southend route. I know that c2c provide a half hourly service between London Liverpool Street - Southend Central/Shoeburyness. You are indeed correct to mention the narrow aisle/gangway in between the 2+3 seating layout.
    Best wishes and take care. Kind regards. Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire.

      I travelled on 321 class when they were operated by Network Southeast and Silverlink on the West Coast mainline from Euston to Northampton, they were good trains then compared to previous trains. 321's have been in service since September 1988 so now just over 32 years service.

  • @quicksesh
    @quicksesh Год назад

    2 years on and these trains are proving their worth. Such an improvement on the 321 and the 360's but one or two of them are now going AWOL due to technical issues, showing that Alstom (having taken over Bombardier) are not on the ball on the maintenance side of things. That said the 720 units running for Greater Anglia are far superior to the Elizabeth lines 345's (which are from the same family) as the TFL units seem to be a light weight 9 car construction meant to allow fast acceleration in the service, but at the risk of more mechanical maladies (for ever seeing the 345's in the Ilford maintenance depot) but also poorer NVH.

  • @stevec00ps
    @stevec00ps 3 года назад

    Peak/anytime day return is £33 or so though which is rather expensive! The stations Southend all the way to my station of Rayleigh (Rayleigh, Hockley, Rochford, Southend Airport, Prittlewell and Southend Victoria) are all the same price too which I think is something to do with competition with C2C. Once Covid's out the of the way I hope these trains are going to be a bit more reliable than the old heaps of nigh on 40 year old junk. I miss C2C's trains - even if they are 20 years old now, and only one facelift I believe, the service is so much better, and cheaper as you point out.

The main benefit for train enthusiasts would be the ability to actually see the passing scenery and night sky rather than that annoying reflection of your face and the train interior when you look out the window, on normal trains it takes quite an effort to see much of anything!

    3+2 seating on a commuter train is an absolute no-no for me. Although I do realise there is a pandemic and it doesnt make a difference right now, but if that train were full, it would be an absolute nightmare. Take that extra line of seats out from the set of 3 and there is SO MUCH MORE room. They did this with the new thameslink trains and it made a massive difference - I was able to board whatever train I turned up for, rather than waiting for 1 or 2 more to pass through before there was room on the old 319s.

    Tbh they don't seem that bad at the moment, but I can rightfully say that I'm not a fan of the seating layout now, because, one point obviously being it's 3 + 2, and the other is that gosh they're too many. Also do these units have First Class or will that be in another sub-class variant?

    • @SuperalbsTravels
      @SuperalbsTravels  3 года назад

      There will be NO first class on any Greater Anglia train, with the exception of London Norwich runs if the right set turns up. :|

    My first though was what a narrow aisle then to my horror I saw the 3 +2 seating layout. Surely nobody is going to sit 3 abreast by choice unless it is very busy? With so many seats was the 3 +2 configuration really necessary? 2 + 2 and a wider aisle would have been so much better! That said the moquette is rather nice and the seats look to have more padding to them than in a lot of new trains.

    • @paulhollis8879

      The number of seats and legroom between seats is probably to allow more passengers on the each train than would be with 2 + 2 seating, and yes the aisle did look very narrow but must meet safety standards.

    Great review.
    Personally, the 720 seems quite disappointing, cramped and very cheap/budget looking. Yes better than what they replace but that shouldn't be the marker.
    During rush hour when there are people filling up the aisles and the person in the window seat of the airline style seats need to get off, it's going to be a nightmare. You'll have to start getting up 5 minutes before your stop to ensure you can reach the door before the train leaves your stop. The leg room on the window seats looks really uncomfortable as well.
    Those poor people sitting in the aisle seats will have to deal with bags hitting their face by the looks of it.
    Great to have decent cycle/wheelchair/buggy space, but the lack of step free access, that's just unforgivable in new trains.

    I’m so glad that the 5-Car Class 720/5s are now in service and with more Class 720s coming throughout the last remainder of 2020 and into next year. Plus with a extra 44 Class 720/5s on order that will see all 133 Class 720s on Greater Anglia. Plus c2c have also ordered 6 Class 720/6s 10-Car units to replace the Class 387/3s which it will also enter service from next year.
    Maybe soon it’s time to say goodbye to the Class 317, Class 321, Class 360/1 Desiro cascaded to East Midlands Railway and Class 379 Electrostar. Which I would think that the Class 379s could possibly go to Great Northern or Great Western Railway/Heathrow Express. And the Class 387/3 could go to Gatwick Express or Southern.
