  • The new-generation Ford Transit Custom is coming to Australia in both diesel and the fully electric ‘E-Transit Custom’ form, with the latter boasting up to 337km of range.
The largely revised commercial lineup features independent rear suspension, a wider side-loading door and a very clever interior design, with a steering wheel that can transform into a tray table at the touch of a button.
Competing with electric options such as the LDV eDeliver 7 and Peugeot E-Expert along with the segment-leading Toyota Hiace, the Transit Custom faces some tough competition in Australia.
With the core diesel range arriving now and the E-Transit Custom due to arrive in Q4, Chasing Cars travelled to Germany to sample our first drive and find out which drivetrain is best fit for which buyer.

I think electric vans will change the Oz market away from diesel utes. They can’t compete off road (on weekends) but for a work rig superior.

If you want to go for a fully electric model there are certainly a lot more options out there for vans than utes at the moment

Agree with you. A lot of vans spent 100% of their time in short, short City commutes which is perfect for electric. In addition, The extra weight of batteries is in such a big deal for a commercial van unless you need Max payload. For companies that have the ability to charge overnight, this should be decent cost savings.

I have ordered a Diesel Custom Sport due later in the year, would have liked to be able to go with the PHEV, but not available at this stage. Full electric won't work for me as I'm regularly doing country runs, so the limited range just won't fly.

No spare wheel is criminal, no wonder NRMA claiming getting 1000s calls for help with flat tyres over potholes..

Don't think I've had a flat in 20 years, grab a portable pump and puncture kit as a back up.

@@sunburst1484 Can't repair sidewall safely and if tyre gets destroyed wheel gets damaged?

@@bertskidmore5506 My point was the majority of people just get flats which are easy enough to temporarily fix until you can get to a tyre shop, if people damaging the sidewalls that often then you should really think about changing their driving style and stay away from kerbs, it's not a ranger.
Besides there's nothing stopping people from picking up a spare for a few hundred and sticking it in the back. I'd prefer not to have the wasted space of a spare wheel well.

@@sunburst1484 Doesn't matter if it's their driving style or a pothole on a wet road, a spare is a requirement I won't ever own a car that hasn't got one.. Plenty tyres are damaged where continuous driving on them is dangerous.. Too bad happens on a evening and need to wait an hour or longer tow truck to come..

Question- why do tradies default to a ute and then spend thousands adding canopies, locking toolboxes etc (making it more van like). Wouldn’t a van be the smarter choice?

How much will fuel (now and projected) and servicing for the ICE and hybrid set you back over the year? Then how many years will the extra cost of the EV take to pay for itself in fuel and maintenance cost savings?

Why do the Chinese make better products from re-engineered tooling of older generations of vans, Electric or Diesel minus the frivilous profit gouging bells and whistles that get claimed off a business tax write off for depreciation?
