Most corded and cordless circular saws range from 5 ½” to 7 ¼”. Now if you are looking for a circular saw blade that can cut through a 4x4 with one clean swipe, then you will need a 10” or 12” circular saw blade. These sizes are most common in a table saw or mitre saw.
The reason you would need that big of a blade, even though you only have to cut through approx 4” of wood for a 4x4, is because you have to keep in mind that only half of the blade is cutting, plus there is another ½” or so of where the bolt goes in at the middle of the blade. For this reason, you will always want to find out what the manufacturer says the maximum cutting depth is at “0” degrees.

Great video and demonstration. I bought one of these over the winter and finally put it to some hard use today on a porch project. Normally, I use a 7 1/4” Skilsaw, but that’s a lot of power and weight and I wanted to see how this little Ryobi would do. I’ll say this about it: It’s a fine tool that I’m glad I purchased. As shown in the video, it’s more than capable of cutting treated lumber with the factory blade installed and it’s frugal on power. I used a 4 Ahr battery and still had half the charge left after cutting well over 80 ft of wood. The only downside I’ve found so far is the guard. It works great on 2”x4”s and 2”x6”s, but tends to hang on wood less than 1” thick, such as 3/4” decking and 1/2” lattice framing. It’s no problem to just hold the guard up to start the cut, but you have to remember to do it. Even so, this saw is a winner.

Mike, also my Pops mentioned in response to the comment above .... “when cutting 1” thick or less wood ... adjust the saw depth to the minimum for cutting .... and that should help with the guard not hanging up,” but probably only if you had a lot of that sized wood to cut!😎👍
I like mine, this Ryobi P505 is lightweight and can cut 2x4, 2x6, plywood, etc... effortless. I use mine with a 4Ah battery. You can't buy this saw by itself, usually comes in a combo tool package, check home depot for promotions.
It really is a great, light weight circular saw. And you are correct, you usually have to get it in a combo set. You can get the P505SBN with a 4.0ah battery and charger for around $175, but the combo set you can get two tools and a 2.0ah battery for less expensive. I cant cut a 2x4 with mine in one pass..not deep enough..need at least a 6 1/4 "
@@SJtoobsox something doesn't add up, a 5 ½ blade should cut 1 9/16 deep, a 2x4 is 1 ½ so 1/16 less that the blade can cut.

I used to live in far-West Texas but now I'm in Michigan with the April snow and rain today. Let me tell you, I don't miss those seemingly endless, scorching-hot El Paso afternoons one bit. I'll take the snow any day, (I do miss El Paso though). I have a friend that lives in Phoenix and they were 56 degrees *_warmer_* than here this afternoon (97°) and it's only April...no thanks!

Thank you for your video. It is informative but with Ryobi putting out so many of the same type tool, it would be very helpful to always include the model number of the tool you are reviewing. I know over the years they have put out at least (4) different 5 1/2" circular saws.

Leaving the saw blade protective guard in place until after installation protects your hands and also prevent the teeth from nicking your work surface.

Thanks for this video. Very helpful! Question, I have an older version of this Ryobi 5.5'' circular saw, and I'm trying to find a segmented diamond blade that will fit. I bought a 4.5 inch Avanti Pro blade, but the hole in the middle of the blade is too large and doesn't fit right on the saw. Do you have any recommendations on segmented diamond blades that would work? Thanks again!
Chris, great question. Most circular blades have a 5/8 inch or a 7/8 inch arbor (the bore in the Center of the saw blade) .... A 10 mm bore is not that common ... And even less common is a 5-1/2” diamond blade for a circular saw ,,, so it might be easier to find a diamond blade with a 5/8 inch bore and use a reducing bushing of 5/8 inch to 10 mm.

I got this saw with a combo kit and found it very under powered. If I move to quickly the saw would stop.
Robert, I am sorry to hear that. I just spoke with my dad, who has had the saw a year now, and has used it on many jobs, even cutting 4x4s and it has not given him this problem. His only thought was to replace the blade, but if that’s doesn’t fix the problem then it could be a defective device or battery. If you have had it less than 30 days you can return it, but if it’s defective, than the manufacturer may take it back regardless if you have had it longer than 30 days. Use a 4 amp battery
My Ryobi grinder does that briefly if you feed it too quickly cutting bolts with a cutoff wheel. It must be protecting the motor. My corded Makita grinder has no such problem. The saw won’t cut through a 2x if you use a cutting guide with 1/4” luan under the saw base. It’s very useful at the lumber yard breaking something down to fit in your car.

Did you notice any power issues?
Raj, Pops said he has had it just over two years, uses it about every other week, on 1/2”, 3/4” plywood and lots of 2x4s and hasn’t had any power issues. Now when the batteries get low, yes, at that moment the power drops, but that is the same with any cordless power tool. But once he slaps another battery on, it’s as good as new. u r thumb is an inch away frm the blade which means u r not protecting the fist grip to save u frm the common wood backlash...also incredibly dangerous !!!

Is this a brushless?
Ramons, this particular model# the P1816, that comes in the 2pc. starter kit is not a brushless motor. Some of the newer and bigger Ryobi circular saws, like the 7 1/2 in., however, do have a brushless motor. Thanks for watching and commenting and let us know if you have any other questions!😎👍

I got the 7 1/4" Ryobi . It's not very good. I switched to the Craftsman and it's a lot better build quality and with more power.
That doesn’t even look like a 2x4 the end where u cut look like it been shaved
