    They will forever have my great respect for creating the greatest rock song of all time, and my always favorite song, Twilight Zone.

      Hear, hear! It rocked then and it rocks now. I'm thinking even the Stones might be jealous of that one. :D

    Barry Hay's father was a Scottish colonel in India, and his mother was a Dutch Jewess. He attended an English boarding school, but as far as I know he's perfectly bi-lingual. Great raunchy rock voice a la Roger Daltrey, although he's quite modest and humorous, like the rest of the band.

      Most early Dutch rock bands wrote their lyrics in Phonetical English and as a result sound terrible when you listen to that stuff now.
      When the Golden Earrings (They would later drop the S from their name) replaced original singer Frans Krasseberg with Barry Hay, it gave them an ace in the hole, since English is Hay's first language. So with Hay in the fold the band could write a song and let Hay go over the lyrics and point out what was grammar correct and what was what we refer to as "Coal English" (Steenkolen Engels, look that up, you'll laugh yourself silly...)

      I think everyone in The Netherlands has to learn English, German, and French growing up. I've never a Dutch person who did not speak English at least functionally.

    Vanilla Queen, She flies on strange wings, Back home, Con man, and more. But, Radar love is their equivalent to Lead Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. Yes, Lead is one of their early concept names. I believe ZZ Top, is the only band still playing with original members longer than Golden Earring.

      These four youngsters are together since 1970. I think that's longer then ZZ top. Exept the sabbatical year 2000 they kept playing, did a few thousand show's.

    Yes, his father was a British soldier stationed in India. His mom, I think, was a Dutch woman.

    Awesome band who deserves more than just to be remembered for Radar Love and Twilight Zone. I could roll off 50 more songs they have really quickly that are much better than those 2 songs. A band worth getting into if you haven’t yet.

      I know what you're saying. When I listen to their '70s and '80s stuff, to me it sounds like stuff that everybody should know. It's classic stuff. I'm not familiar with their '90s and beyond output, so I can't speak for that...please forgive me.

    I turned on to GE back in the 70's listening to CHOM-FM (Shom Shom, Shom Shom) 97.7 on your radio dial. Montreal Kaybeck. One of classic rock's golden stations.

    Oh my dog...some of these promo chats are so painful to watch....How come these guys didn't even manage to conquer heartland U.S. where such cliche "heavy" poprock outfits normally do rather well......?
    Probably because these polite middle class Dutch boys had no stomach for year long exhausting slogs around the U.S.
    Being world famous in Holland was enough for them....Not such a bad idea.......it kept them sane and off heavy booze and dope ; which normallly wrecks most bands that do these endless mindnumbing tours to crack the holy grail U.S. market .....

    • @narvul
      @narvul 6 лет назад +2

      They toured the US quite extensively but also felt homesick. They all were on booze and dope.... what do you think...??
