I agree with Wendy. This sketch format is a great vehicle for impressions. Even if someone has basically five funny seconds of an impression, they can still add it to the mix and use it.

SNL is currently in its 49th season, and, as far as I know, there hasn't been an announcement that the show will end. I can definitely see the idea of "Rejected SNL cast member auditions" being a sketch on either the 50th anniversary special or the show's 1000th episode (it's currently on its 957th episode. Only 43 more to go).
It is amazing how all Kenan's impressions are always spot on and hilarious, even the "serious" Steve McQueen. But my favorite always will be his Steve Harvey, "playeah"

I was in a play a few years ago and last minute they wanted me to play a bigoted character, a small role for a scene, and I couldn't say the f-word(to two men i knew were gay irl) without tears welling up in my eyes. I couldn't separate reality from fiction. And eventually they took me off that role. I don't understand how actors can play roles like that without feeling a piece of them dying.

Hader's Alda is uncannily spot on. No one could ever pry me away from MASH as a kid. And I love the man's work after MASH too. Hader is such a talent and he and Alan are both legends, in my mind anyway.

And I keep telling you: 5 to 6 years before being unceremoniously let go from SNL is still worlds better than half a season of MADtv with only a music video parody as your most memorable moment.
Just love the idea that these celebrities auditioning just REFUSE to break from their established characters, no matter what the role, no matter what the moment.
Dammit, Bill Hader is unrivaled, every different role he's given and the voice impressions he nails truly make me think he's totally different people in each role.
