- In the late 80’s and early 90’s there were few homes in South Africa, which did not have an Opel Kadett parked on the drive. South African’s simply loved the Kadett’s space, practicality, sporty drive and charming fun appearance.
Moved forward a couple of moons and Opel are now producing the Kadett in its 11th generation. As time rolled forward, Opel changed the name Kadette to the now present name, the Astra.
The latest generation Opel Astra represents the importance which technology is having on all modern vehicles. With its price of R374,000 in its current configuration, it certainly presents itself as a segment leader in terms of driver comfort features and technology. I am confident that this all-new Astra will is set to lead within the compact automatic hatchback market in terms of its overall solid offering.

Great review as always Jason. The Astra offers unbelievable technology and features for the money
Thanks, Alan very impressed with its wealth of technology, especially within this segment
Good review. Best car in it's class. But I may be biased being from Luton UK - Vauxhalls headquarters based here (our Opel). Also for its class this car has longest recommended time before servicing - 30,000 kilometers, sums up their confidence in this car.
Thanks so much, completely agree. The new Astra is a real technological marvel and a game changer. Kindly see and subscribe for future reviews at: ruclips.net/user/technobokunboxing Best regards Jason
I just got the exact same Astra and i LOVE it
I had the older version from 2015 and the changes are drastic
what was one a car for the usual IT technician, having to travel from A to B with little comfort, it now feels almost like an Audi or so (well, at least the features)
Completely agree, this new one is on a whole new level
Hello Rising how do you find the car I am picking up mine today or tomorrow and untill now I found only good things about it?
Hello, I found driving the Astra very good. It packs modern technology, a comfortable smooth drive and overall I was impressed
What about the real mpg on the car I will pick up the136bhp diesel 1.6 automatic any thoughts I am hopping for city to get around 30-35mpg, my current car is a 2011 A Class which the fuel consumption in city is around 21-26 mpg which is really bad if I hope this one will perform better
Hi Leo
I can't tell you for sure how much its in mpg (gallons i guess, damn the imperial system :) )
But i have a diesel 1.6 automatic and right now (after the first two weeks) my counter is at 5.8Liters per 100 kms
I guess its going down a bit later, since im still getting used to an automatic gear
I have the sport plus. It is a great car. The only thing is the MAPS. I cant seem to find updates for South Africa.
It is a great vehicle. Have you tried speaking to the agents? Dealerships should be able to advise.
Yes, I have tried them. CMH Opel in 89 Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe, Umhlanga Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, 4300. I have had the car for 2 years now and the reply is always there are no updates. Not sure where Opel bought the Maps from but the Maps on the vehicle are outdated. I would say +-8 years.
Will let you know if I can find anything additional on my side. Kind regards Jason
How is petrol consumption I heard it is very heavy on fuel.
I’m thinking about buying an Astra J with automatic transmission. What are your experiences with the gearbox and the car? Would you recommend it? The one I would buy is 1362cm3 140HP petrol engine.
lukam I have a J Astra 140 hp 6 speed automatic with 120k km.So far so good.Worthed the price.
