  • Pokemon isn't usually seen as a plot-heavy game, what has drawn millions upon millions of gamers towards the mainline games is the gameplay and sheer depth of variety the monsters bring along with it.
    But this doesn't mean they aren't capable of creating a story that engrosses you and refuses to let go. You just need to take a look at one of the spin-off series for proof of that.
    And yes, this is another long episode.
    Bad endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

    This game's main ending will never not make me tear up. I think it's so fitting that your partner is typically a weak first form pokemon, and then seeing them just break down on Bidoof at the end... it breaks me too. Accompanied by such a melancholy version of the main theme and it feels so hopeless, but then light breaks through the darkness after the credits. The true ‘creepy’ ending is when you realise the implications of darkrai at the end, darkrai goes through a dimension portal thing but it gets shattered midway, similar to the start of the game... but the only thing is the start of the game includes both grovyle and the player... though it’s not out of hand to think that this entire game is a complete paradox... like come on... the main character from the future is the only human in existence even though in the present there are no humans so where did the human come from in the first place... unless, darkrai loses his memory at the end of the game in a similar way to the main player and gets turned into a human, similar to the ninetales curse from the original game but reversed ... a lone human in a world filled with Pokemon, an alien to Pokemon basically... then the human meets a treecko assumable who evolves into grovyle eventually. And Then the story unfolds. Darkrai has the dimension scream ability and so does the main player character. So it’s not Farfetch’d to say that darkrai and the player are both in a paradox.... A PARADOX WHICH WAS CAUSED BY BIDOOOOF when he wished for new recruitment buddies at wish cave.

    I cried at every endings in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. This spin-off is quite precious to me too, I love every moment of it. Being a Pokémon, meeting our new best friend and precious partner, living wonderful adventures with our partner... But then... the ending, the most difficult part in this game. Forced to leave the world behind while we wanted to stay in this world, but in some cases, fate can be cruel. I even predicted our partner would be the one to disappear someday and it really happened. But eventually, we ended being reunited as we're inseperable.
    If they bring a new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game in the future, I could imagine the ending where the hero and partner "both" disappear (could think about Terranigma too). If I was in this situation, I may be sad, scared... but at least... I would stay with my precious partner until the very end, and that would be enough for me to feel reassured as I wouldn't be alone.

When your partner tells you their name, you get an odd sense of deja-vu, and throughout the game, it bothers your character a lot, and near the end of the main story, your character has a dream of two people talking, which are your character and partner in human form, and you wake up, confused about what the dream was, so you decide to tell your partner about it, and they tell you they had the same dream! You and your partner decide to see what it was about, so you go to Xatu and he tells you how you were both humans and whatnot, and the game kinda plays out from there.

    Something which isn't mentioned often is that Pokedex info of Dusknoir says it can emit a dark aura that weakens Pokemon's minds and makes them more prone to accepting orders from them. That would help explaining why your partner, and all of the present-time Pokemon trust Dusknoir that much and why you, having the mind of a human, do not get affected.

    I think the ending actually helped me more than anything. PMD1 and PMD2 are similar in that you know your going to disappear, but don't tell your partner until it's happening. PMD1 was a game I played while my dad was deployed in Iraq, and it started a lesson that I truly learned in PMD2. People sometimes have to to away, be it simply moving away for a while, or something much more permanent. And that, while I should still be sad that they are gone, I can still move on, even if it hurts. Odd that it's a lesson I learned after my dad cane back from Iraq alive and well, but a lesson I've learned nonetheless. I understand that my experience is not the typical one for people, but endings like this are better than happy endings to me, because great acts of heroism, are almost never without sacrifice.
    EDIT: Something I think you missed out on bringing up is that, right before the final fight with Darkrai, he manipulates you into seeing your partner join his side, and basically tries to trick you into either joining his side outright, or to just stand still long enough in the "real world" for him to off you. And if you choose to join him, you are barely snapped out in time to see him about to strike. A nice little detail that I think most people see through easily enough, but it leads to a nice moment of actual thought and roleplay.

      Bram ;; YES! I love Pokémon Amie/Refresh, but I’ve never really been able to get fully behind the transition to 3D Pokémon models over sprites. I suppose the change makes sense from a business/design standpoint or whatever, but I’ve just always mostly preferred sprite art over anything else for games. I can enjoy a 3D model game just fine (Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing New Leaf and City Folk, and any game for the Switch are all AMAZING and so pretty) but something about pixel art just makes me happy to look at it. And games like Stardew Valley, Spiritferer, and even this one clearly prove that this art style can still hold up well today.

    • @bramt2000
      @bramt2000 3 года назад +4

      @@fIorapetals I personally am a huge fan of Pokemon with sprites. Maybe it's because I grew up with them but I feel like the 3d models are lacking something. There was some backlash with it when sword and shield were revealed. The whole thing about lazy animations and such. What I think Pokemon mystery dungeon EoS and stardew valley have in common is that it's very detailed pixel art with a lot of attention to detail which I extremely love. You could for example see the shadows and such in the sprites when the character moves. With the 3d Pokemon models I feel like they are just one color without very much detail (I don't know if they changed this in sword and shield). But I hope they step up their game in the future or maybe even go back to those old sprites. Though I must say I like Pokemon mystery dungeon DX

    The Nostolgia. On Christmas 2011 i believe it was, i got a Nintendo DS Lite in silver. The game i got with it: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time. I played on my first playthrough till the expedition i believe and then got stuck there. In a new game i got to the forest with the first Timewheel. Got stuck there too. I didn't play it for quite a while after that. Then i made a new game. Because i was in the Beyblade hype, i called myself Gingka (protagonist of Beyblade Metal Fusion and also a Ginger like me) and Sora (a later character from the series who also uses the Bey Pegasus, but with a slightly different version). Gingka was a Mudkip and Sora i think a Chimchar. I played through without getting stuck. When i entered the boss fight against Dialga, i listened to the Music for a bit and got goosebumbs. And lost. After grinding a bit, Gingka the Mudkip learned Dire Situation, which makes the enemies HP the same as yours (150 HP max). With this, Dialga was a breeze. Then the Ending came. I've seen the ending on RUclips before, but now it hit REALLY deep. Seeing your best friend going back home in tears because you effectively died is such a sad moment, and when you come back thanks to Dialga, well let's just say that that was the moment in this Video where i had to hold back my tears the most. After that, i played the afterstory a bit. We graduated and did a few missions, but it never came to the point with Azurills Nightmare. Now i have lent my Sister the Game ( though i dont know if she even played it, since she refused to give back pokemon Pearl since she didnt play through it) which is why i cant revisit it right now. I still have the DS Lite, but the Top Screen and the Speakers dont work anymore, since a bit of the connector on the right side where the lights for the battery life are, got away and now it doesnt hold into place and the cables got a bit, lets say, streched out.
    Loved the Video, when the Cutscene before the Titlescreen came up and the Mystery Dungeon Theme came, thats when i first teared up. Over time it became a real fight against them. I thank you for bringing such fond memories back.

    If something is fated to happen (example, time stopping), then it has already happened. If it isn't fated to happen (time not stopping), then it has to happen for it to, well, happen. It's like a true ending, it doesn't happen until it does. I think there's a logic behind time travel that unites it, and we can't understand it because it is just a little too much, but basically the past, present, and future are tied in a special time line thing of sorts where the events that happen in those times only happen when it happens, and thus the future can be changed. It's like driving a car. You can't drive it until you start it up. And just like in the future you get to drive a Lamborghini, you can only drive a Lamborghini when you get one, otherwise you can't do so.
    The idea I believe it works by is that the future is one of many, and so the reason why the future has yet to change despite it going to be changed is because there is the possibility it won't be changed, so it doesn't change. It goes back to that fated thing I mentioned, if there is no other path to follow, it will happen. For example, it's like waking up. You will wake up, so it will happen. You can't stop that. Or, it's like day turning to night. The sun will go down inevitably, so in the very near future (let's say, midnight), it will be nighttime. You can't not make it that. In the sense that it has multiple chances to happen, it's like life. You may live that day, maybe you will die. But if in future you are alive, it won't make you dead until you die. Because there is still a path where you don't die. Until it happens, it won't happen.
    A little convoluted and confusing, but basically it is a case of "It happens, so it happens". Straightforward.

    I want someone to mod in a creepy bad ending if you lose to primal dialga. Everyone of your friends and allies fall in despair realizing you have failed. The world shakes and sputters as the eternal darkness begins to surround. Your partner says sorry to you, and to the world for not making it. The world glows grey, and the tortured cry of dialga is heard.
    "BUT, THE FUTURE REFUSED TO CHANGE."

    Ho-lee-frick. The pokemon mystery dungeon series is a deep one for sure. He devs do a amazing job at storytelling and enhancing with previous knowledge of the Pokémon world. Heck, they USE POKÉDEX ENTRIES AS CANON INFO. Sure, the mainline games are good. But they _have_ been decaying as of late. But the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon serious will be, and always will be legendary. A staple in my life for sure. Now I’m gonna list off things I liked and stories of my first experience of this game!
    1. When Dusknoir arrived for the first time I already had bad vibes. I was afraid of dusknoir and I admittedly still am. He’s terrifying! His looks scream villain material! And this game proved my poring further...
    2. The music in this game is amazing. Now imagine if it was orchestrated.
    3. When was Grovyle pushing Dusknoir back into the future, somethign really hit me there. I was just in awe of what was happening. We’re never gonna see Grovyle again? We’re gonna disappear into nothing? I have no words for what I was feeling. And I’m afraid I still can’t explain it today.
    4. During the flashbacks I didn’t know it was a flashback and I got really confused.
    5. I think dimensional scream is really cool and I use it for ONE of my OCs. Sadly no one ever got the reference. How sad...
    6. I always thought Cresselia was supposed to be a good guy because she’s the good dream? And then she told us to frick off??? But then it was not Cresselia and then I was no longer confused.
    7. You know you’re having a bad day when the frICKING GOD OF SPACE SHOWS UP AND *KIDNAPS YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TAKING YOU TO SOME SORT OF PRIVATE DIMENSION WHERE NO ONE WILL HEER YOU SCREAM AND IT’S ALL OVER A TINY LITTLE HOLE.* Talk about overreaction.
    8. When you think about it, there are many kidnap attempts in this game and it’s scary.
    9. After hearing the music where we disappear and the music where the future trio disappear, I cried because I remember how emotional it was for me back then. And I remember why I was somehow attached to those short lived characters. And then I cried some more. And watching your partner cry in front of you, because of you, broke my heart. I don’t ever wanna leave them again. Fay. I miss you. And if I get the opportunity to get a vulpix as my partner again, I will FLIP out of happiness.

    The one thing that bothers me is we never really get to see the player's actual human self or learn about his/her life leading up to the thing. Like, they make it sound less like a standard trainer-pokemon relationship and more like they're partners. Also if there's such a differentiation between humans and Pokemon that it gets pointed out as such, where are the humans typically in the MD world? It sure sounds as if it's a separate world, but do we know one way or another for sure?
    Lotta lore questions raised by this stuff... and that, combined with a story that's pretty substantial to begin with, is a sign of a dang good story.

    • @YourCrazyDolphin
      @YourCrazyDolphin 3 года назад +2

      Although, it is a bit of a plothole, where the humans are.
      However, the player's life as a human being ignored is likely as they are literally intended to be you. Hence why the quiz at the start of (almost) every game is directed to the player, and asks to read your aura- also in super it uses your camera at first, as though to reflect the view through your eyes.

    • @Somerandomjingleberry
      @Somerandomjingleberry 3 года назад

      @@YourCrazyDolphin That makes sense. Though how you yourself would get zoomped from the "real world" to that forbidden Pokemon future of frozen time is anyone's guess...
      Say, is there a PMD game where every pokemon you see was once a human like you, but over the years they all got zoomped into that world just like the protag did and slowly populated the place?

    • @YourCrazyDolphin
      @YourCrazyDolphin 3 года назад +2

      @@Somerandomjingleberry No, in fact the games seem to be loosely connected (as you can spot recurring characters, including many of the explorer'a guild in Super).
      However, in Gates to Infinity, it is shown that the protagonist isn't the only human brought there, as it is shown the humans brought to the world who fall become stars in the sky.
      Then a legendary Pokémon literally curbstomps you. I think it was meant to be dramatic but the animation was too funny.
      Although yeah, explorers of sky/time/darkness is a special case and I don't really get it either.

    I think I was one of the few to trust Dusnoir, I was 10 or 11 at the time I played it and hadn't played anything with a twist like it at that point even his faint smile didn't seem odd to me this was the pokemon who had just saved me and my partner's life it would have felt like a betrayal to not trust him. When the reveal came I was shocked and maybe even a bit in denial I didn't want to trust Grovyle he was the character I had spent hating for so long but once I did trust him he became just as much a friend and partner as my real one I think I had to take a break when he sacrificed himself because I was crying so hard. Looking back on it all the way this game completely changed my perspective of two characters in such a short amount of time is amazing it taught me that things are not always as they seem and gave a love for Grovyle that carries on to today
