National Girl Guide Walk 2024 | Empower Girls Today - Inspired Women Tomorrow kicked off

Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association celebrates 107 years of proud Service to the Nation
The national Girl Guide walk is happening the 18th of May 2024. Join in the nationwide Girl Guide walk in solidarity. It is a fantastic way to demonstrate the unity and oneness of the Guide movement spread around our beautiful island.!
The Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association (SLGGA), the country’s largest female-led volunteer organisation for girls and young women, recently celebrated 107 years of proud service to the nation. Guiding was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1917 by Miss Jennie Calverley, a young teacher from England who joined the staff of Girls’ High school Kandy, where the first Guide Company was formed. The Jennie Calverley Green Oration is held to honour and celebrate this visionary personality. Prof. Arosha Adikaram of the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo, delivered the 3rd Jennie Calverley Green Oration ont this occasion.
The national Girl Guide Walk 2024, organized by the Guides & President’s Guides Award Sub-Committee of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, to commemorate 107 years of service under the theme “Empower Girls Today - Inspired Women Tomorrow,” kicked off today at 7.30 a.m. in all the districts of Sri Lanka. SLGGA members representing the Butterflies, Little Friends, Guides, Rangers, Adult Leaders, and Commissioners past and present were at the event.
ශ්‍රී ලංකා බාලදක්ෂිකා ව්‍යාපාරය ආරම්භ වී වසර 107 කි. ඒ වෙනුවෙන් කොළඹ, ගම්පහ, බදුල්ල, මාතර, කෑගල්ල, මාතලේ නගර වල බාලදක්ෂිකා ජාතික පා ගමනක් පැවැත්විණ. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පාසැල් රැසක සමනලියන්, කුඩා මිතුරියන්, බාලදක්ෂිකාවන්, බාලදක්ෂිකා නායිකාවන් විශාල පිරිසක් මේ සඳහා සහභාගී විය.

The Colombo district walk was organized by the Colombo district commissioner and her team.
The Rathnapura district walk was organized by the Ratnapura district commissioner and her team.
The Matara district walk was organized by the Matara district commissioner and her team.
The Gampaha district walk was organized by the Gampaha district commissioner and her team.
The Matale district walk was organized by the Matale district commissioner and her team.
The Badulla district walk was organized by the Badulla district commissioner and her team.
The Anuradhapura district walk was organized by the Anuradhapura district commissioner and her team.
The Polonnaruwa district walk was organized by the Polonnaruwa district commissioner and her team.
The Kegalle district walk was organized by the Kegalle district commissioner and her team.
The national Girl Guide Walk 2024 was planned by the Guides & President’s Guides Award Sub-Committee of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, to commemorate 107 years of service. The walk commenced in all the districts of Sri Lanka on May 18th at 7.30 a.m. with the participation of over 7000 members of the SLGGA. The walk was coordinated by the district commissioners and their teams in each district and it happened concurrently in all the districts.
The Chief Commissioner, Dr. Kushantha Herath, The Deputy Chief Commissioner, Mrs. Nirmalee William and the Assistant Chief Commissioner, Mrs. Nanduni Wickramatunga along with the members from all Branches, which includes Butterflies, Little Friends, Guides, Rangers, Guides from the Differently Abled Branch, Commissioners past and present and members of the National Executive Committee were all present at the Colombo district walk.
This was a wonderful display of solidarity, sisterhood and togetherness of the Girl Guides family around the island.
We are excited and eager to celebrate 107 years of dedication, service, and volunteerism!
The national wide walk will be held on the 18th of May after being postponed in accordance with the circulars issued by the Ministry of Education to postpone all outdoor activities due to the weather conditions at the time.
We hope that all our members will join this momentous event on Saturday the 18th of May 2024.
Chief Commissioner Dr Kushantha Herath, Deputy Chief Commissioner Mrs Nirmalee William and Assistant Chief Commissioner Mrs Nanduni Wickramatunga along with the members from all Branches, which includes Butterflies, Little Friends, Guides, Rangers, Guides from the Branch for Guides with Disabilities, Commissioners and Presidents past and present, and members of the National Executive Committee graced the occasion.
Let us celebrate our legacy of 107 years of empowering girls and women to reach their fullest potential!
