Ky-Mani Marley: Rastafari is Not a Religion

  • www.vladtv.com -Ky-Mani Marley sat down with VladTV and spoke of his roots in Rastafarianism, which he wants to clarify is not a religion involving rules, rituals and regulations that can create a great deal of division among different types of people. According to Marley, it is more of a way of life that abides under the principle of one love amongst all.
    Ky-Mani also briefly spoke of the businesses his family owns in the Marley name, jokingly saying that it seems like they start a new one every week.

      ***** They who believe that are representative of the twelve tribes sect and others. I and I, orthodox rastafarians know that Emperor Haile Selassie I supersedes the concept of god. God could be anything, any fragment of faith. Ras Tafari is the spiritual nucleus of the movement. Bless!

      no they don't they believe that they believe there has been a second advent and he came in the form of haile selassie. As christians would believe that jesus came in the first coming. Get it right before you speak. Christians don't believe that jesus is God they believe he is the son and came to deliver his message and teachings of love. Same with Haile Selassie and if you do your research you will see that he is a descendent of David and therefore God.

      I teach religious studies at high schools and I can tell you from my studies and experience of Rastafari that it depends on what individual that is talking. Just like any other belief rasta is percieved variedly amongst followers. Bobos are generally more ortodox in their ideology along with Nyahbingi if compared to 12 tribes that are more liberal. So in that way it is very much like any other religion. What makes rasta distinct is that it's core really is how someone choose to live: diet, fitness, selected media production and consumption. Therefore, rasta is more like eastern religions, since it is more based on actions rather than ideologies and rituals. In a way rasta is connected to nature and vegan philosophy, which actually is becoming more prominent in the movement than Selassie as we speak. Rastafari evolves just as any other spirituality and that's not sin, that's just a natural process. I believe in nature the most, it always stays the same and should always be respected and cherished. Label me a rasta if you want or not, the point is I don't try to force my belief upon people and honestly do not care what people wanna say because livity mi seh...

      You don’t have to do this/that. What you have to do is redefine “dreadlock”. You have to know what dreads are before you can justify not having them. Words are spells. Leave Ras alone and what is this man doing giving an interview on about his mysticism while enslaved under “European” influence.

      I've been on my rasta journey going on a year now being a rasta is working on yourself your body training your mentality to become a rastafari which means u have went on your own path of self acceptance holding no hate for others treating your body as a temple that's why vegan is mandatory and you must be accepted by other rastafaris before you can fully call yourself 1 being a rasta does not mean you are a rastafari so no rasta is not a religion but to be a rastafari there are rules that's why smoking the herb is mandatory because it is a way of meditation and get deep into yourself. A portion of Ras think we should follow everything the King did and said. That’s madness. Rastafari is about finding Divine self, tuning into nature, Love, Blak pride, confidence in self , freedom, self reliance, bringing blak ppl together, positive thinking, positive livity. Haile Selassie never told us to do those things, Rastafari bredrin created it for ourselves.

    I don't know much of other Marleys; Bob has 19 children, all still alive and quite young. But what I've heard them talking I have to say that Ziggy and Ky-Mani are particularly wise guys. Here's Ky-Mani saying exactly the same thing as Mutabaruka when he was young. They both are saying that rastafari is not a religion, but more like a philosophy. Muta said that religion comes in many forms, christianity, buddhism, rastafarism, and they are all based on love. Here's Ky-Mani's telling the same, but in his own words. He's a young man, just 37, soon to be 38, but so pleasantly calm and a profound thinker. I like him, even more than Ziggy, and absolutely more than other Marleys. Blessings to all of them. Btw, Muta doesn't even smoke marijuana. Many others use rastafarism as an excuse to smoke it all the time = what's that got to do with meditation? None of my business, I guess.

    Just happened so that meanwhile I lived in Jamaica in a rasta village. Well, rasta living has gone far from what it used to be decades ago. I came to witness how they drink, party many times a week, smoke weed of course ( nothing bad there!!! ), but what made me leave Jamaica was the fact that a couple of rasta guys stole all my savings. Thank God I had a ticket waiting at the airport. It was finally all I had left since those "rastas" stole all my money, savings of many past years. My lifelong illusions of rastafarism came tumbling down, crashed. No one who hasn't experienced what I did, can't imagine the bad taste and feeling inside I had when I left. And after what happened, there's no use for anybody coming to explain absolutely anything about rastafarism and the purity of their life style to me. I know now the truth of playing rasta and how todays rastas live. Such a dissappointment...

      +peach nathaniel the points of locks. 1. For all Africans. Because Africans back then did not comb their hair. If you don't comb your hair then it locks up. 2. It represents the lions mane. All Rastas including I&I consider gods. And lions of thyself. 2. The comb and scissors is a babylonians invention. That we Africans should not use. Because it is not of Africa. 3.we forbid the cutting of hair because the bible says so. But should sometimes be trimmed.

    • @peachnathaniel5524
      @peachnathaniel5524 9 лет назад

      noah vizzian I'n'I hear what you're saying but I'n'I just gonna add a little Iya.
      The first known examples of locks are from Egypt, you are right with the Old Testament accounts and that they originated in Africa but they are not exclusive to Africa, according to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have 'hair like snakes' Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn locks too.
      The rise of the Rasta dreadlocks however is something entirely separate. It was born in the 1930s when Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia. When the emperor was forced into exile during an invasion, guerrilla warriors swore not to cut their hair until the emperor was reinstated.
      As for the comb, Africa had combs well before Babylon intervened. The ancient Egyptians had Afro combs. One writer tells us that the Egyptians “manufactured a very striking range of combs in ivory: the shape of these is distinctly African and is like the combs used even today by Africans and those of African descent.”
      But I'n'I do reiterate the fact that you don't have to be dread to be Rasta or praise the most high and the bible is open to interpretation as it speaks differently to others.
      I'n'I agree with you that we as a people (human race) shouldn't cut our hair and as such haven't cut mine for over ten years.
      Respect,

      Not 'homophobic' - that is a frankenword. They call it 'homophobia' to silence people. Homophobia is not a proper meaningful term. Eg: "homophobic behaviour will not be tolerated and will lead to dismissal". That means basically if u do ANYTHING or say anything the lgbt don't like: you're fired. Homophobia is too broad a term. It covers discomfort to hatred to violence.

    Dreadlocks are more than just Identity, they date back to slavery in Central America. Slaves that free'ed themselves stopped cutting their hair whilst hiding in exile in nearby mountains and woods. So dreads also signify freedom, as they fought to free other slaves.

    Hello, a question...
    Rastafari is not a religion OK blessing...
    Rastafari is TORAH?
    Lifestyle according to the TORAH...
    Understanding that there is a restoration of all things of ELOHIM.
    I think that yes, the answer is that Rastafari is not TORAH or does not subject itself to the law of YAH, then how can you say that Rastafari is a path to YAH ELOHIM if you do not observe or keep TORAH...

      Rastafari is for the black community only. It is a way for us to connect to Africa, Our motherland which we were taught to hate by the western world who were exploiting our land and people. My ancestors were stolen from there and we as the descendants of the Africans who were kidnapped from our beautiful land of gold, diamonds, oil, etc know it is our duty to find our ancestors lost voices and also our own voices and our identities and love ourselves once again as black people through the teachings of Marcus Garvey and H.I.M
      Love all the way from Jamaica.

    His father Bob Marley said the same, but it's based on christianity (Ethiopian) which is a religion. There's rasta churches and bibles today and very organized in it's rituals and church keeping only on sun-days for example. When it's organized it's religion IMHO.

    Rasta is Black awareness of self and pride Black unity. faith in Jah. knowing Jah is in control of all, good or bad. Rasta roots are in Africa and sprouted out more in Jamaica. a lot of people have locks these days not half are Rastas. +oneway designs well if they claim black pride, or only wear dreads to look cool or something then yeah it is stupid, but i think a white person can be rastafarian. i mean kymani just said its not a religion there is no rituals, or regulations its a way of life. so if a white guy chose to govern himself, and live that way of life like the rastas then what is wrong with that. is it just his skin color, and heritage that sets him apart? arent we all human? didnt all our ancestry originate in africa? The belief that jah (aka GOD) or yeshua (aka jesus) only cares about black people is not the belief bob marley was promoting he was promoting one love, and all mankind to be one love not just the black people. no race or culture is without sin. so no race should judge the other, because none are without guilt or blood on their hands. we are all born equal, and innocent race is just a large family tree nothing more. if rastafarianism is about faith in jah the creator of black, and white people then why should white not be allowed to share the culture since we are all united as mankind and should not be divided.

    • @onewaydesigns3337
      @onewaydesigns3337 9 лет назад +9

      what's wrong is some white feelin like they understand the struggle of another then trying to change what they don't overstand so they can say i'm this or that. I&I never said Jah only cares or loves Blacks He loves us all. People don't love as we should. And we should all be equal but I sure you know that ain't real. and it ain't Rastafarianism. we got no ism's in OUR life. last thing, all our ancestry originate in Jah not evillution. peace

      @vikingbrowski3718 9 лет назад +3

    Anything that involves the worship of a being or deity is a religion. Any lifestyle that relies on a holy text to guide your daily steps = a religion. Rastas worship Haile Selassie as the second coming of Christ (Christ being the divine son of God) and read the Bible/Holy Piby as their spiritual text. Therefore, it's a religion. Nothing wrong with that. As long as there are no greedy, immoral leaders who abuse their congregation, religion is fine. It's cults you should worry about.
