Very cool aircraft and flying skills. I've seen models on floats but never on skis. That adds a different dimension. Congrats on such a fine flying model and skills.
Thank you! The skis didn't catch the market somehow I don't know why. When you see the plane coming on landing, and on the last flare you see the rear part of the skis touching the ground and their front coming down, as the springs that keeps them level with the fuselage, get tension, and the plane satles on them, there is nothing like that with anything else.
Thank you! Now I'm working at another video of the Cub with electric power and also other onboard vews like underneath the fuselage and side window view. Just need more footage.
Yes me too. I've done the same thing slowing the flaps from my new Tx as shown in my new summer flying Cub video. The old tx didn't know that and I didn't mounted a servo speed device either.
I would suggest putting a remote starter and a remote choke on that playing it makes things a lot easier. I have it on two of my gas models and it's fantastic. While flying you can cut the engine and then restart it when you're in the air people will think it's a dead stick haha. It's very inexpensive approximately 110 dollars. It takes about 25 minutes to put in. Just a suggestion you'll have a lot of fun with it, and save your fingers or hand. When people see it at the field they going to want to know where did you get that looks great it's so cool.
I've thought about that since I've saw on youtube a DLE 30cc with electric starter. I don't know if there is much room left in the small cowl of the Cub for that starter kit which for me doesn't matter anymore because I've made it electric powered now for a wile and love it. Thanks for the tip!
At 2:16 he looks at a sheet of paper. I am just getting into the hobby of gas planes and was wondering if that was a fuel mixture chart or a temperature and mixture chart or what it was? My follow up would be where can I find one online and how should I change my mixture for different climates? The problem with the planes I’m working on is that they are. Both 30 years old and have no registration numbers I can see on the engine or the glow plug. I use 20% nitro fuel currently and run relatively lean although I have been told it’s better to run a bit rich. If anyone can enlighten me that would be great. I have to say warming up and hand propping an engine for 30 mins after fully taking it apart and cleaning it is so worth the feeling you get when the engine catches and spools to action for the first time since the late 80s. Love the hobby and hope to continue. I am still fixing up the plane and am yet to fly but I will probably make a maiden voyage sometime next week.
Hi, yes I have to check my homemade mixture cardboard because I don't want to leave much mixed fuel at the end of the day and need to know how much oil do I need to the amont of gas that I add to the one already in the bottle. I can't say about methanol because I don't use it. As for gas I use 25:1 mineral for break in and later 40:1 synthetic.
Congrats on reviving such old engines! I'm sure that putting them back together gives a great feeling of being part of a nice machine. The mixture list is nothing more than the mixtures I mentioned, at different gas quantities so I don't have to do the math at the field each time.

Extremely well and artfully produced video! Excellent in-cockpit footage, no doubt. Would love to see this model with a scale-like horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine...hmmmmm?! Super plane.
I'm glad you liked it. Thank you!. Well I don't think they make engines that small in 4-cylinder boxer type not even on methanol. Boxer gas engines of 20cc 2-cylinder do exist but I don't know how well they work at that size, I was thinking about that in the past. There are also 4 stroke boxer engines. Annyway I've switched to electric power after a crash due to the high voltage wire being cut and interfeared with the radio signal.
For the life of me I couldn't figure out why my facial cheeks were aching at the end of this video, and then it struck me: I had been grinning from ear to ear for fifteen minutes straight! Thanks for the outstanding entertainment!
Thank you! That was a pain in the ass to do..took me a couple of days. I've mounted the throttle and choke servos one side and the other of the fuel tank at the back of it, in front of the first seat. The hard part was to route the pushrods so that they will go besides the tank and then in front of the firewall being bend at about 90 degrees towards the middle of the firewall, then again 90 so they will pass through the holes in the firewall to the arms of the carb. the thing was...when they were pushing the carb arms, the bend part of the pushrods that was paralel to the firewal no to touch and push against the firewall...like I said, wasn't easy but it worked. More space would have been great, in the engine compartment too. I can't think of other solution. I've searched the forums for pictures of 90 degrees arms mounted on the carb so that the throttle and choke can be activated from totaly different angles so that I could mount the servos on the firewall but couldn't find a better solution in my case, maybe others did. Good luck though! Now that I have it on electric power is a blessing. When I took all the electrics, mechanics and adapters from the plane to switch it to electric, I've filled a big house table to my surprise and undestood why I've worked so much on it.. I also have pictures of it on my fb page, album Carbon Cub..take a look. facebook.com/Jackal.Astro.Pilot/
Very "cool" vid. One suggestion The inside cockpit camera. Wouldn't it be neat if you could have a live working steering wheel in the shot? when plane banks left be able to see steering wheel turning as well. or climbing, watch steering pulling out too. ???
Thank you! You are right, a few more cockpit details would have been a blast. Unfortunately the gas tank comes way back, blocking the area where the stick or pedals (for steering) would be. Then, there are the vibrations that loosen many things. On the electric version, it crossed my mind of a pilot on the seat, his hand moving along with the stick when the plane banks, and a camera mounted underneath the wing towards the pilot, through the windows. Maybe in the future..
Third of the video is with scale slow flyby. If it gows fast, inverted, knife edge I'll do that just because I can. If too much speed is what you refered to.
Instead of trying all the time to find things that we don't like so we can bring another critic out, we should enjoy the ones that we do like and be sure that what we don't like, others love.
So what I liked the most about the plane are the skis that you made for them. I looked at skis from Dubro and they look like toys. The ones that you built look very professional. I bought the Saito FJ-21 4 stroke gas engine and am waiting for the COVID restrictions to be lifted in NYC before I buy the plane. The question is, would you be willing to sell me a pair of skis for this plane. Truth is I am only getting this plane because of your video.
Thank you. I'm glad I've inspired you to enjoy RC flying in winter too. I like my skis too. As for selling skis, I have to say that I didn't think that much about it, although someone else asked me about a pair also. Besides the amount of work needed everything being made manually, from what I know the shipping taxes can be a pain. And I mean 30-50$ if not more for EU or USA. They can be that much that added to the price of the skis would be a price that I can not ask someone to pay for a pair of skis, compared to those on the market that are not expensive. If you were here I would gladly help. I can provide pictures and explanations if you want to do your own.
@@Seneslau07 Hi, thank you for replying. Your skis go very well with this plane. Dubro makes a pair, but they are not as sleek and attractive as yours. I would be willing to pay the shipping cost no problem. Let me know if you are willing to build them and the price. If within my budget, I will buy them from you. Thanks again for considering.
Could I ask how much you spent to complete the kit. I’m looking at this plane for my first arf but want an idea of what I should expect to spend to complete it. Thank you and great video
Hi, this arf took me quite some time. Maybe because first I mounted a gas engine which is more complex then an electric one, and because I like to think the steps from the manual and add changes to my needs. Like for example I've mounted a 20cc gas not 15. Because of the small room it took me days to sort out how to drive the carb throttle arm through the firewall, and crumble the EIS behind the gas tank behind the firewall. Had to cut all the hinge gaps for nilon hinges, a personal preferences as I hate the ca ones, make room for the engine, those took days. This plane has about 80 pieces (including the bolts) only at the wing spars and landing gear. I've calculated about 170 hours of building, some days from morning to down. It's pretty complex. When I've made it electric it was a play..
@@LeeLee-br2hs You're right 🤣😄 well most of parts were from hobby king, 20cc motor or electric later, 100A esc, 12-17 euro/piece servos, two 35 euro/piece Rx, etc...hard to tell.
The skis are made from toilet sink mask, a sort of plastic that covers the pipes in old style toilets. This plastic has the benefit of being not just one plastic sheet but a comb structure, which when, cutted in two sheets, it remain on each sheet the ribs. Those ribs are ideal to attach the reinforcements. Early on I used to cut from aluminium sheet the reinforcements, but now I find to be easier to make them from ply, which I warnish and paint to be waterprof. A spring and three pieces of 2mm steel wire (like from a bike wheel spoke, servo control wire, etc) they make the end movements of the skis and flexibility. Mentaining it paralel with the fouselage in flight, but alowing it to drop the rear when on the ground and the plane drops the rear of the fuselage too (this time the spring stretches). Maybe there are more simpe projects out there if this one seems to complicated. I love them because of that :) and always enjoy the snow. Please visit my facebook page where I've just made an album with many photos and some text about the skis. I hope they will help you imagine how they work. But if you have any questions we can discuss them. ruclips.net/user/redirect?v=mETIrYr5NNE&redir_token=zHIcStv6ctNNs6fxCe9VYWEa2898MTU3NzMwODM2M0AxNTc3MjIxOTYz&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FFlying-Jackal-115490616487481%2F

@@Seneslau07 Thanks for your help, pretty impressive Facebook page.
@@irwinwka Thank you! 👍
Gee, another super Sonic cub.

@@Seneslau07 he was actually asking for an estimated dollar amount $$$
@@LeeLee-br2hs You're right 🤣😄 well most of parts were from hobby king, 20cc motor or electric later, 100A esc, 12-17 euro/piece servos, two 35 euro/piece Rx, etc...hard to tell.
Like the Real Thing
Thanks!
That one will be in another zip code before you know it! Nice! Cubs - so nice. Why did they ever stop making em? that 4 cycle sounds great!
Thank you! They already stop making them?! It's actualy a 2 cycle 20cc but when in slow motion it sounds like a tractor :))
How do you keep the skis from looping all the way around? Curious on the mechanism that limits the skis movement. Appreciate it if you can reply!
Looks good , what size prop are you running?
16x6 prop, iven 15x6 so I could slow it down enough for landing.
