I was about 12 or 13 years old and would stay up to watch tv on weekends, when one night I was flipping through the channels and came across Austin city limits. We were listening to Zeppelin, Floyd, Hendrix and a variety of old Rock and Roll at the time. When I heard Roy on ACL I was in awe. My inexperienced young heart was torn and elated with his guitar playing. The fact that he’s not super known makes him even more special. Thank you Roy for touching so many of us.
Roy wasn't ahead of his time, nor was he behind on the times.... he was in his own time. Not many people know him, which is very sad. He truly was one of the greatest guitarist of all time.
You might be surprised... there is a lot of people who know him well. I know him well, and saw him. But you are right. He was himself. In his own time.
I just started listening to Roy's music a week ago.... embarrassingly....I'm 63 and been hearing of him for a good many years ...just overlooked him I guess. Now , for 8 days straight I've played everything I can find of Roy Buchanan over and over and over again. To me....he's not one of the greatest players...he is the greatest guitarist I've ever heard. Only Chet Atkins and Roy Clark Glen Campbell ...maybe Jeff Beck Albert Collins BB King were close....Roy Buchanan makes it all look so damn easy. He's haunting me. I'll be a fan till my days are done. Long live the greatest guitar master of all time
I knew him and I am from Maryland so I also knew Danny Gatton and those guys were just driven people that didn't want public acclaim, they just wanted to play
Can't speak of anyone that could play the guitar and connect and play directly from his heart and soul. Like Roy. Never got to see him live but I could only imagine.
You look at Roy's coy smile.....like he was aware of his incredible ... unequalled talent and he'd toy with us mere mortals by teasing us with his seemingly effortless bending of the strings......making that Telecaster SCREAM so mournful and sorrowful. Roy told his story through that guitar. No gimmicks ..no whammy bar...no pedals....no distortion......pure talent...his fingers seemed possessed. I can't get enough of his magic. Rejoice in Heaven Roy. You showed the world what a true MASTER sounds like
HE WAS AND HE STILL IS … IN OUR HEARTS. I AM HOPING THE INTERNET WILL FIND HIM NEW FANS ! I PITCHED ROY IN BACK IN THE 70'S THEN JOE BONAMASSA, ERIC STECKLE AND ALBERT CUMMINGS GET OUT AND SEE LIVE BLUES .
I been listening to Roy for 30 years ...but lately i feel more connected to his playing...i go to sleep on aeroplanes listening to Roy. So soothing. Like someone else knows what its like to be alone in this world...as we all are
You are not alone if you have strength I lost my son 4 yrs ago 😢 I almost totally lost mine ,thanks to my daughter and granddaughter for keeping my heartbeat going
I've been listening to Roy Buchanan since 72 or 73. Ever since he made his 2nd album. As far as I'm concerned he was one of the greatest guitarists to walk the Earth. Also, he was a hell of a songwriter, just an amazing story teller. Unfortunately, we lost him way too early. RIP my man!!!!!!!
And I agree he and Zappa are probably my two favorites. Sad not many people my age have had the opportunity to listen to these two and many more. It opened my time and gave me perspective on my young strange life.
One can study Roy's "techniques" and "tricks" and learn how to do some of what he did with a guitar..but Roy was such a Master of his instrument that his playing transcended Technique..He was able to allow the guitar to be a Direct Expression of his soul..obviously (if you have ears to hear) a haunted, even tortured Soul..He expresses, with his guitar, something that language cannot speak..He has spoken to me and for me for 45 years.
It hits you immediately. The sorrowful anguished haunting wail of that Telecaster.....I have never heard someone play so clean and with such command. He was extremely next level. R.I.P. Roy .......
Here again Roy.. Thanx for all da guitar vibes you gav a young black kid from da atl hoods.. Growin poor and watching your interviews and doc. About your life gave me da courage to keep playin, peace.. -rikki sparx
The first time I saw him was on a TV special on public television. The first time live was at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh Dec. 27, 1974 & he came back always around Christmas time. And I saw him 16 more times. What a Christmas gift. He never played to an empty seat. At least not in Pittsburgh! J.D. from where else, Pittsburgh.
This takes me back to friendless days of somewhat recent months gone by. Afternoons spent smoking dope in my bathroom and playing my guitar. Roy and Maestro Zappa filling my ears with heavenly harmonies. Days spent thinking about life, my promising near future, and finding people like myself to find a way through life's maze. Those days have since passed but this music takes me back to that mindset. No Iphone, no friends, nothing to do but smoke, (ironically) run, and play guitar. Roy man ever since the second time I listened to "I Won't Tell You No Lies" I have been treating my ears to your melodies. Thank you for giving me insight into the past, and teaching me about The Soul. And pain.
I did not mention. I have had personal battles and struggles with myself and the terms of life no 14 year old should have had. Roy's music took me through battles with my conscience in a year that felt like an eternity. Very adult, critical, deep, depressing, interesting, amazing battles over my life's meaning.
Roy's best work was done live. I've just discovered this clip. Hey, It must be Christmas !!!!! Thankyou so much for uploding this soundcypher !!!! We are so fortunate to have RUclips !! Again, thanks.
Roy was a true innovator. His music will always be around. To say that it's a shame that not many people know him is absurd, I mean, why should they? Not many people listen to instrumental music in the first place. The average listener is fixated on vocals and pop melodies. So what. Not many people have heard of great surgeons or great but totally undiscovered painters. So what. Roys music has always been there and available to whoever wants to hear it. He is very far from being 'unknown' and there are other really great guitarists from Roy's generation who died broke and unknown. So what. That's the way the world works. True artists don't chase down fame or money. That's for posers, phonies or people 'born to the business'. So what. Roy did just fine and had many more opportunities then most and was the first to admit this. Not everyone gets the chance to develop incredible chops or have a major network do a 90 minute special on their life like the PBS documentary done on Roy, among other things. In many respects, Roy had it too easy. But he had real soul and had a true love for the instrument. God bless Roy Buchanan.
I read recently Roy played with his amp on full, everything on 10, and all you hear on that telecaster is his incredible knowledge and feel of how to play that thing better than anyone

Greatest guitarist never known.

I could listen to Roy Buchanan play all day long. This man was beyond next level. He was in his own class. Untouchable
Can't speak of anyone that could play the guitar and connect and play directly from his heart and soul.
Like Roy. Never got to see him live but I could only imagine.
I had the pleasure to see Roy twice, I was in front of him both times, damm was he great!
Lucky Man

It's too bad that "commercial Media" will never produce great music again. Well... that is.... unless it begins to be profitable again
