Identitools I'd definitely recommend giving the WRE a go, they're easily one of my favourites to play as. It's a very different playstyle to almost every other faction (except maybe the ERE) as your mission isn't to expand, but rather to try and hold onto as much as possible in the face of constant invasion and terrible public order (iirc only one province starts the game trending upwards). Expect your territory to do nothing but shrink until at least midgame, unless you play VERY carefully. If you want any hints/advice just ask, although it can be pretty fun going in blind the first time.
One question, how do you "deal" with the ERE as the WRE? Will they at one point betray me? (not historically accurate at all but this is a game after all... AI can be shit). Do they actually try to help the human player? Any advices? I wonder for instance if it could help to go roman pagan (to ditch the costly temples)
I've generally found the ERE to be a reliable ally. They won't help you that much directly, but they act as a distracting alternate target for your enemies and are a very helpful buffer from the Sassanids and the rest of the eastern factions. Also I think it helps in diplomacy, as your enemies will be at war with both the most powerful AND the second-most powerful empires at once and hence more likely to make peace (not 100% sure about that though). As for religion, the +1 osmosis bonus from Latin Christianity makes it very difficult to convert to anything else without losing a whole lot of territory first, but that bonus also means that your territories slowly convert themselves without needing many temples anyway. I'd recommend demolishing any tier 2 major temples right at the start (and possibly tier 1 but they're less costly to maintain), as you'll both get rid of the upkeep costs AND give yourself a nice bonus of demolition money to invest in profitable infrastructure. My biggest piece of advice is to be aggressive and solve problems early. Hordes in your territory? Kill them before they declare war. A neighbour declares war? Invade and destroy them (I find they're very unreliable when subjugated so either raze or occupy). In my first game I tried just giving up territory to the barbarians and playing defensively, but all that happens is they take your land, build up their economy more, and send yet more armies to attack you. Far better to take the fight to the enemy and knock them out, even if it means leaving some land vulnerable to invasion/rebellion. Note this doesn't apply to enemies like the vikings, who are far enough away that it's impractical to send some legions (at least in the early game). Just knock out their armies when they arrive and try to make peace. Also, always keep an eye on public order, and look for ways to improve it. Food shortages are often the biggest contributor to unhappiness, so try to be producing enough in every province if possible. If you execute captives often enough your emperor can pick up a trait that gives up to -3 public order for the whole empire, if that happens consider assassinating him. Don't ever let anything around Italy and the islands rebel, or else the Western Roman Separatists might appear, staring a civil war and another -3 public order everywhere. Consider rushing the first religious tech on the civic branch, it'll deny access to some nice buildings but it'll also give about +3 public order everywhere in combination with the tier 2 civic tech bonus, which can be a real lifesaver. Essentially it's all just a matter of careful maths. Remember, -99(0) public order is stable! Finally, get used to town defences because you'll be fighting a lot of them. Roman troops in testudo are surprisingly resilient (and nearly invulnerable to arrow fire) and with a bit of practice you can win some pretty ridiculous victories against much larger armies (for example, this video, or this other one I uploaded a couple of months ago: ruclips.net/video/FG-DF-akR00/видео.html ). For particularly vulnerable towns, invest in a garrison building and it becomes pretty much untakeable. Hope you find that advice useful, good luck!
Identitools This game is everything but boring, especially with WRE and ERE. I like playing with the Huns too, but it gets too easy for me midgame( I basically sacked and destroyed like 90% of the map by the end and made a military victory).
I love it when testudo holds like a melee shieldwall although it doesnt function as one without modding. Sad that pikemen will break the formation no matter how high unit mass is
Geth in attila both def and atk testudo gives no melee buffs and just reduces the point of contact, which leads to reduced attack potential but longer survivability. I use mods to at least make defensive testudo a strong melee formation for awordsman.
at first you are proud after winning such a battle. then it becomes standard and after that having to fight those Battles starts to bother you and you stop playing
Killing the enemy general is key with the marines thanks to the sea sickness debuff is key. The enemy is much more likely to rout after that. Also, I think the AI enemy melee units were Nordic brigade which are trash. Only the spears are likely to stay in the fight and there weren't many: the Roman units outmatched them, especially in testudo. The real threat of the AI army was all the missiles and javelins but the player's aggressive tactics stopped them being brought to bear. An AI army with solid melee units - like axebands or Gothic warbands - do cause my Romans fits. But they are surprisingly rare in Attila. One the of scariest armies I faced was 19 axemen units in a Pictish army. Low morale and just tier 1, but the sheer dps meant they just walked over a tier 2 balanced Roman army.
In Rome 2 you can get the ai to attack you with their entire Garrison in a coastal siege, you can just ram the transport ships , I sent like 1000 Etruscans to the bottom of the sea with one trireme manned by 17 guys.
I had a town port defense against 1.5 fully stacked fleets with a similar garrison size except I had 2 cavalry units. I somehow channeled the entire army on a 3 slot port like what you saw here but the difference was that they had no where else to land except a peninsula dock thing that they ignored cuz I guarded t with a barrier. Concentrating my bows on the adjacent town center ledge and my infantry all facing where they landed and the cavalry on the sides I crushed them one by one. I wanted to share a replay saying “guess which one is the AI” but they AI did something different in the replay but my units still did the same thing as if it was the actual replay and it didn’t go well.
Attila is an exercise in willpower on harder difficulties. You won't lose in battles, you'll lose by losing the will to fight a siege defense for the n^th number of time!
My god... That's so accurate it hurts... By the way, it reminds me of a WRE campaign where I had to defend Colonia Agripina like three or four times against mainly Saxons (with one, two or three full stacks). Your roman archers and skirmishers have a blast every time.
I mean if I'm some barbarian schmuck hopping off a boat and immediately getting attacked by a Roman cavalry unit whilst my general is fucking dead I'm gonna panic too.
Nice. I'll never forget my 2 best battles in Total War games 1st one was in 1st Rome TW where i playered as greece 2 militia units and 1 regular infantry vs 3 cavalry units and 6 infantry ofc i won because "high ground" (obi wan approved) Second one was in Shogun 2. My army of about 1,6k made fully out of Ashigaru vs enemy army over 2k samurai soldiers. Battle took place in the forest so i just used my general as a bait and then jest simply rekted them
Nice job. I always used town defence to cause great casualties to the barbarians but I was rarely ever able to actually beat them with such few soldiers. Sadly, you moving around so fast was pretty uncomfortable...
Been doing this for Wre, thinking about publishing a guide on defending settlements as Wre as its super easy with even the 4 units your given, mind you I have never been attacked with a garrison of Cohors/Liminanie, by the time I have replaced cohors with legio and limintanie with Comensenties.
Wow nice man ! is it just me, or are the garrison quite small and hard to defend !? I got trouble with it. Are you ment to make a LOT of armies to defend territory unlike WH where you mostly have a few armies in the start since the garrisons seems the handle well with walls.
pro tip 2 untis spears two units pikeman 4 crossbowman = win againt unlimited amounts of enemies ( easier in barabric settlemnts cause ai will struggel with ranged untis if u corner your units right) and if u can field more units a lot of kav and some decent swordsmen to break the moral of tousends of men in a second works everytime ( makes it a bit boring tough also works with only spearman but wont be as op)
I really hate attila fight mechanics ,once i remembered i had stacks of cavaley 3 shocks and 3 archers +my general, i totaly crushed best frank swordman+spear man in 10 minutes by killing almost all of them and i may lost 20 units thats ridiculous
lmao this is the vast majority of my experience with this game is just desperately trying to defend your least defensible settlements from surprise attacks by the AI
I've played waaaaaay too many battles just like this as the west romans. Surprisingly won them all. Might sound like im bragging but I'm really not haha
Are you playing on easy difficulty? 'Cause on my Attila the AI is a real pajn in the ass. But eh! I bought the game in october 2020 so I guess it has been patched.
The AI is always dumb with port assaults. I play the Himyar a lot and every time I assault Aksums minor port settlement my cavalry will spawn on the field instead of on a boat so the ENTIRE Aksum army would go out to fight my cavalry. This has always lead to me taking up the cities defences, destroying all their importantly placed towers and holding the centre of the city from the DEFENDERS attack as my cavalry can easily outrun their army and regroup with the mainforce when it has taken the City.
Mithrondly Tricking the AI is the ultimate tactic in this game, these tricks are a truly art of war. My favorite one is the 20 minute battle horse trick, making the entire AI's army follow a single unit of horsemen while my army is hiding, so I can avoid conflict, draw the battle and then retreat so I can wait for reinforcements. Sadly we can't be as tricky playing Attila as playing RomeII because some of the glitches were patched but some still work and it is very funny!
The AI glitched during one of my wre playthrough. The maurians had a small navy came as reinforcements but glitched out and sat there for a whole hour.
i would have gotten like 4 of those ships sunk before they even reached the beach with the ships ram you can cheese rome and attila naval battles with troop transports so hard with a couple of medium rams
It is if you like that cultural time period or warfare time period (and inf you dont bother wide palettes of black and dark brown in your games) It's was great improvement to Rome 2 except right now Rome 2 it's as same polished as this game. Still have it's own unique elements Rome 2 doesn't have such as campaign attrition due to constant war, the option to sack a settlement without take it.
-"Hey there's a cavalry unit massacring our archers. Should we help them?"
-"Naaaaah let's go and rush the fortified city center"

I like the Generals name being Hilarius Novellus!
Your PC must be OP if the video quality and frame rate looks this good on youtube
I did the exact same town defense today, I won it but it waant as cool to watch as this
Nathanael Paxevanos I remember doing this recently too, except it was an Ostrogothic / Roman mix of a garrison, pretty fun stuff
Seasickness is a godsend I so wish it'd be ported retroactively to Rome 2
When you try your best but you don't succeed
I wanna see you defending successfully the Uesugi against the endless takeda horde.
1v1 units and you manage to rout the enemy. This is a display of unit quality.
It makes you wonder how the West fell
They got bored and stopped playing.
My god... That's so accurate it hurts...
By the way, it reminds me of a WRE campaign where I had to defend Colonia Agripina like three or four times against mainly Saxons (with one, two or three full stacks). Your roman archers and skirmishers have a blast every time.
Your micro management is extremely impressive
Its pretty funny how u can beat the inittial saxon attack smashing their general with ur only ship and then crush their army defending with 4 units
Nah this is just the normal battle you need to fight in the 1st term of the WRE game.
Just like the ERE's first battle with Visigoth.
The real ridiculous thing here is the morale of troops while landing
Ketsu-wo-taberu Because Their general is dead front of their eyes.
I mean if I'm some barbarian schmuck hopping off a boat and immediately getting attacked by a Roman cavalry unit whilst my general is fucking dead I'm gonna panic too.
The voice lines all sped up is unreasonably funny
it´s made even better by the fact that the Roman general is called "Hilarius"
An average day at the Saxon shore
0:56 General Ben Shapiro
Wow man you are a pro!!!!😎😎😎
And then another one five seconds later
1:01 sowestandweholdtoarms
The amount of times i did the exact same strategy with the general goes beyond me..
defending camulodunum as the picts gave me ptsd , damn jutes
Nice. I'll never forget my 2 best battles in Total War games
1st one was in 1st Rome TW where i playered as greece
2 militia units and 1 regular infantry vs 3 cavalry units and 6 infantry ofc i won because "high ground" (obi wan approved)
Second one was in Shogun 2.
Sadly, you moving around so fast was pretty uncomfortable...
you dont want watch the hell that out for 20mins bud
Been doing this for Wre, thinking about publishing a guide on defending settlements as Wre as its super easy with even the 4 units your given, mind you I have never been attacked with a garrison of Cohors/Liminanie, by the time I have replaced cohors with legio and limintanie with Comensenties.
I gonna try this in my next campaign... when the attila ambient lights doesn't depressed me enough to stop playing it.
give me op town center , give me those 4 garrison units and ill do magic
Hilarius Novellus. Quite befitting.
Who has tested the mod fall of the eagles?
I did, and it was great
This is ridiculous. Plain old units instantly rout a superior force while taking nearly no causalities? I'm calling shenanigans.
Just another day in west rome...
praise.
Just love!!!!!!!!
Damn this guy is good
indeed, only an usually defense
chilled
Looks like every single defence in this game.
So, westandweholdtoarms!
Honestly, the "double Garrisons" Mod makes this so much less unbearable
I personally find Fall of the Eagles more enjoyable than base game tbh. A lot of neat quirks that makes it a bit more unique like DEI does for rome 2
Wow nice man ! is it just me, or are the garrison quite small and hard to defend !? I got trouble with it. Are you ment to make a LOT of armies to defend territory unlike WH where you mostly have a few armies in the start since the garrisons seems the handle well with walls.
This damn game is so all consuming it's ridiculous. Defence after defence after defence.
pro tip 2 untis spears two units pikeman 4 crossbowman = win againt unlimited amounts of enemies ( easier in barabric settlemnts cause ai will struggel with ranged untis if u corner your units right) and if u can field more units a lot of kav and some decent swordsmen to break the moral of tousends of men in a second works everytime ( makes it a bit boring tough also works with only spearman but wont be as op)
When You Actually Understand That Roman Units Are Far Better Than Every Other Unit In Game.
Genius
"are you a god?"
I'm a Zod. Does that count?
Seasickness
Just wow.
I really hate attila fight mechanics ,once i remembered i had stacks of cavaley 3 shocks and 3 archers +my general, i totaly crushed best frank swordman+spear man in 10 minutes by killing almost all of them and i may lost 20 units thats ridiculous
lmao this is the vast majority of my experience with this game is just desperately trying to defend your least defensible settlements from surprise attacks by the AI
any game like this but in ww2 or modern except for world in conflict and company of heros and mens of war
This brings back so many memories, abusing the stupid AI is the only way to preserve the roman empire XD
0:47 Total War Aku Aku
I've played waaaaaay too many battles just like this as the west romans. Surprisingly won them all. Might sound like im bragging but I'm really not haha
Dan Ngo no, you are.
gg
Nice
I prefer playing this game with mods. The vanilla isnt as good as rtw 1 and m2tw
Why these Japanese men defending rome?
respect))
Now watch the video on 2x speed
i would have gotten like 4 of those ships sunk before they even reached the beach with the ships ram
you can cheese rome and attila naval battles with troop transports so hard with a couple of medium rams
I always fight my battles no matter what. U can kill so many when defending against the ai xdxd
Easy difficulty be like
typical
Is this game worth getting? Compared to the other Total Wars.
Ah thanks for your input, i actually landed up getting the game and i indeed agree with your analyses.
