How many sheep can you put on an acre of pasture?

  • Our dorper sheep are eating down the pasture faster than it can grow. We are in a good grass growing region. It is also a good time of year for growth yet the grass is real short. I have heard recommendations up to 12 sheep per acre. This has proven to be way too many. Our ten sheep are keeping the 4 acres of pasture down to the nubbins. #sheep #sheepfarming #pasture ‪@FlanaganHomestead‬

Agree with this fully. We have 5ac total and 2.5ac fenced for the sheep which can only keep up with 6, and at 12 dorper lambs/ sheep we have to open the whole 5ac up to them to keep them fed, and the grass at a reasonable height. These numbers are on a normal rainfall year 600mm. We have sandy soil and with lower rainfall of 300mm, which we get sometimes, even 5ac wouldn’t do.

Another great video, thanks Rob! Do you ever let the sheep into the tree fields? Or would they cause too much damage?

I am afraid to do it. Even when I let them in my yard they keep their head down and eat grass most of the day. Then all of a sudden they are chewing on a blueberry bush. I can’t afford to lose the shape of my Christmas trees.

@@FlanaganHomestead thanks Rob, I figured that would probably be the case. Shame there’s not an animal that would keep the grass and weeds down without damaging the trees!
