Is this the future of Christmas tree fertilization for seedlings?

  • At East Fork Christmas tree farm we are always looking for ways to improve. Today I will be fertilizing a test plot of trees with packets of Black Magic fertilizer. This is a product made by Spectrum products in British Columbia. They have been successfully using this product for timber trees. We typically don't like to fertilize first year trees so that we protect the roots. They claim their product is good for first year trees. We will know later this summer. #christmastreefarm #fertilizer ‪@FlanaganHomestead‬

    I've been using tbags for the last 3 years, just switched to that brand specifically as I'm local to the manufacturer. The gel crystals work very well I found, almost too well as they start bulging out of the ground. If they're anything like the last two years of tbags I've used they should work very well.

    Interesting discussion on the water absorbing crystals. A few years back I had a student who did a Nationwide award science research project on use of similar material to improve dry land wheat production. Amazing how research evolves

      absorbing crystals over wheat fields. I can't imagine how much they would need to spread. Did his research project show it was effective?

      She actually treated seeds with a powdery substance similar to the absorbent material found in diapers. Her data showed success but it needs to be a cost effective solution as well as thoughts regarding environmental impact, if any. I believe she has some working agreement with a ag business but not sure

      If you get enough rain it should take the nutrients down to the roots

    Looks great thanks for sharing! Do you mulch the trees once they’re planted?

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  2 месяца назад

      We do not mulch. We interplant most of our new trees amongst the old ones. It would take more manpower than we currently have to carry chips to all the new trees.

      If you have the ability to water all summer long yes. If not I would wait until next year.

      @@FlanaganHomestead I have water suplay to all my 5h land but I have to put in bag for 30 days in refrigerator first and then in pots and then next year I am planing to put in main field. Its our first time. I am so exaited that I cant wait 😄 but in same time we want to do in right way too

      @@jurisjelnikovs6694 you will definitely be late and have a short growing season if you cold stratify now then plant. Best results would be to wait for next year. Or you could try planting 1/4 or 1/2 of them this year and learn something.
