- Sammy Hagar performs "I Can't Drive 55" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Sammy’s a serious guitar player. I saw him perform live with Van Halen on the 5150 tour in Philadelphia, and I couldn’t get over how well he elevated his guitar playing to Eddie’s standards. I almost couldn’t tell them apart. I was under the impression that Sammy was Van Halen’s singer & rhythm guitarist on the album, but it was plain to see during the live show that Sammy brought a second soliost to the band. Sammy brought a lot more to Van Halen than it might have seemed. To this day, 5150 is one of my favorite albums. 1984 and 5150 are equally the high points of Van Halen’s career, which wouldn’t have happened without Sammy Hagar.
I mean, Hagar had nothing to do with 1984 but success wise I agree that they were the bands high points.
@@paddytguitar I never said Sammy had anything to do with 1984.
@@jelleleeuwis4353 I never named a best album because that's subjective, obviously. I said their career was at a high point.
@@Bikewithlove You said 1984 and 5150 wouldn’t have been good without Sammy Hagar.
@@paddytguitar - Nope. Learn how to read.
I was sitting in the living room watching this with my sweet mother in 1985. When Sammy said this is for all you tractor driving motherfuckers out there my jaw dropped. I sneaked a peek at Mom and the look of disapproval on her face was something I'lll never forget. She's in heaven now.
I doubt that Sammy would have said that if he was standing in the (live) presences of your lovely mother.
Dude in the back was killing that chorus
God.... I love the crap out of this music!!! Long live Van Halen and the 80's!!
this song is truly a marvelous masterpiece
Somewhere in that audience is my grandpa!!
😂❤ I’m 55. And can’t drive 55.
I had my 4 kids listen to this!!!!
Now they get it!!! Ha ha
Bill Church on bass, Jesse Harms on keys, David Lauser on drums. Lauser still plays with Sammy in the Wabos I believe. Killer band.
Had the opportunity to see Sammy in 1978 in Boston - with Boston as the headline. Sammy blew away the audience , to the point that when Boston came on the chant was Sammy-Sammy....It was embarrassing- almost. Blew
Boston off the stage in their hometown!! It was awesome!!!
Wasn’t the guy in black and blue in Boston then? Totally embarrassing either way. Cringe.
One of the most iconic performance in Rock lore.
I met Sammy once in Mexico. Im a regular kinda guy. Treated me like royalty. Great dude.
That is so cool . Thanks for sharing .
This Song has gotten me in more trouble than I care to admit
I can only assume that the title of this song is a protest again the rediculous 55mph speed limit on US Interstates?
*Ridiculous
+jack fuck off
+Anki Hansen gee, that's not nice
yes, hi, I am 15, a guy. my Auto Shop teacher said that the speed limit used to be 55MPH on freeway's back in the 70's-80's. then, they reduced the speed limit to 60MPH on the freeways.
dont do drugs kids
the crowd roaring 55 glove me goosebumps
sammy should have never left these guys...
Sammy is that awesome guitarist that I'll never be. 🤣
Aw you never know
Don't worry about it . Just play !
Sammy's solo band was bad ass. And as seen here Sam is no slouch playing guitar. He can for sure make it talk.
He's so damn good and under-appreciated.
This is one dude who can sing great live, and as a senior citizen today, still amazing!
Pfft Gary Pihl the other guitarist sang most of this lol.
@@Fearzero Maybe. What difference does it make? I guess you must have never seen a Van Halen show with Sammy. The cat can flat out sing. He can STILL sing.
Saw him last summer. Still awesome, voice hasn’t lost too much for 75! Was a freshman at u of I for farm aid. Mind blowing for a mostly country benefit.
I played the show with another band and had the pleasure of bumping into Sammy and Eddie Van Halen at the food tent. This was the night Sammy was announced as the new lead singer of Van Halen. Problem was, he dropped the F-bomb so much TNN went off the air and nobody got the news until the next day. Killer stuff!
What band?
Winters Brothers Band.
To be specific I was road crew for Winters. Played bass for them a little after this.
@@trekkingtn I would commit homicide to meet either one of them especially Eddie
@@emilymathews7073'Em how are you doing these days? Best regards
On this day in 1921 {September 10th} near Berlin, Germany the Ayus Autobahn highway was opened to traffic.
The highway's outstanding feature was its nonexistent speed limit...
And 83 years later Sammy Hagar released the album 'VOA'; the first track on the LP was "I Can't Drive 55".
The song peaked at #26 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 Singles chart.
'VOA' stands for Voice of America & was Sammy's last solo album before joining Van Halen...
Mr. Hagar will celebrate his 66th birthday on October 13th.
This fuckin' rocks! Sammy is a genuine musician and stage performer.
We're still going at it after 27 years. Visit our website for upcoming info on this year's concert!
I'm originally from Chino, California. It used to be a dairy town.
Now I live in Blythe, California.....
A hay farming town.....
My question is:
Can my band and I play Farm Aid to help out the farmers?
I'm going to have to go dig around at my parents house. I recorded this event when it was on. It will be on VHS tape.
Love Sammy. This song always reminds me of Back To The Future 2.
Awesome show. Back with then it diddnt matter what u looked like people respected tallent. Now days we got pretty shiny tallentless idols.
*That drummers got some gas innim*
I seen Sammy Iive back in 81
That's awesome.
So Did I,in 1994 in Milwaukee at Summerfest
"THIS IS FOR ALL YOU TRACTOR PULLIN' MOTHERFUCKERS!"
:D
I remember that like it was yesterday!
Hey , them MF'S is still hauling .
Covid-19 didn't stop all of them .
Awesome performance by the whole group. They were all rocking, kicking ass, & having a ball. They were cranked up for their hard driving, signature song. If it doesn't motivate you, Well ??? The timing of song was when all Americans were all restricted to driving 55 MPH to conserve gas because of the gas crunch in the early 80s.
+choritzo1963 Started in 1974 under Nixon.
What a party, man. Would have been great to be there and rock out with everyone.
Same .
back to the future II brought me here
And that kids, is what you call crowd participation!!!
The greatest Rock anthem of all time!
A pure entertainer!
sammy's lyrics make complete sense because of the widespread frustration of having 55mph as the speed limit during that time. are you a roth fan by any chance?
Saludos desde Uruguay! 🇺🇾
We need a lineup with Sammy Hagar then!
I see Pihl, Church, and Lauser
We loved you long before Van Halen........................and love you even more now. Will be in Cabo May 1st ............
The all bass mix.
Is the guy with the mullet on bass?
The end of Sammy and the start with VAn Halen....rock on!!
Both Awesome 😎
What a blast!!!
That guy, with pineapple-like hair he's 40 years old that time and still move like a guy in his 20s
With the way the guitar seemed like an obstacle here to his singing and playing, looks like Sammy was totally ready to join Van Halen and become a specialist vocalist!
i think we need another farm aid;^)
Who knew the gyrocopter pilot from Mad Max played guitar for Sammy Hagar! The things you learn
The guy with the long hair?
Sammy Hagar, I Can't Drive 55!
Calm down . 55mph is longer the legal speed limit .
Just the song that u want to play while driving at 140 miles on the 5 fwy heading to San Fransico. In a Vette or Ferrari
rock and roll !
Waaaww Ça c'est du rock... :D Trop bon
eu adoro as músicas do Sammy hagar
I saw this when it aired. Haven't seen this in 30+ years. Wow.
Sammy could get a crowd going back in the day .
@@v.dargain1678 It was Farm Aid and included Performers Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Willie Nelson. That's why the crowd was so large.
@@adolfmcduck1265 Thanks to Sammy's badass song the highway speed limit changed .

Love Hagar. But there were times when I wondered if he had a little too much sugar in the tank.
I was just thinking about that 😂. They've got this song crazy fast.
Lol JM
LOL !! Uh-huh . Same . But he's still with us so I think he must have switched to sugar-free treats
Playing the V like a Boss...
My favorite song of all time.

Is that woody from cheers on guitar at :17???
was there something wrong with his guitar? or did the sound person have his hands like completely full?
Can anyone tell me the exact model that Dean ML is?Cause I have that exact one but it needs repair and parts badly so any help would be appreciated.
Seen Him in '83, '84, '85 and once with
Van Halen in '86
I Can't Drive FIFTY-FIVE!
He looks like a blond Hercules lol
@gailmckennag
Yes, especially check out Montrose, the band Sammy was in before he went solo. You'll never want to listen to the poppy crap he crooned in VH again after listening to his pre VH material.
Why was the ending cut off?
Banda manda bem!
Sammy is a pretty good guitarist
And lotta energy
The width of the s-10 tail gate.
Can someone tell me what guitar that is? I know it is a dean dimebag but it only has 1 pickup, I'm not sure what pickup that is either. I think a humbucker.
It is not the same shape as a Dimebag Darrell’s guitar, it is shorter and more star shaped.
god this vid's Ace!!!!! sammy is the man!!! long live ur rock and u as well dude :D

Guitars Gods & Guns joined Van Halen 1989
85, idiot
@@trentsmith9768 Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen in July 1985. Not sure where you got 1989 from.
They had the guitarist's mic turned up way too high.
Great show but Sammie’s axe needed more volume.
let's hear yours
Marty Mcfly must've gotten a modern camera
Sammy looks like a poodle I use to have!
iddddaduncan Lol!
So I guess that would make him a S.O. a B.
My poodle Pierre had great hair,I miss that dog!
The thing to remember is that this video was from decades ago... when Sammy looked and sounded his best!
You mean your poodle looked like Sammy.
I think 50 cents and love of momma
Just for a second I thought the guy with the black and blue shirt was a very tall and masculine woman
@TheCharismaticVoice prevanhalen Sammy Hagar...

1:13 "uhh!"
Please, tell me you're not serious: looks were just as important back then as they are now. Do you want an example? Look no further than Michael Jackson. His elaborate costumes, his makeup, his repeated surgeries... what do you think they were for, if not for looks?
Why isn't this show on DVD?
The Justin Bieber defense...LOL
a guy in that haircut sooooo coool mm
Gary Phil is the other guitar player and background vocals.
I thought that was a tall woman for a sec. terrible singer.
LOL at the unplugged guitar.
