Fun and Sad fact: the real-life Hijikata had a daughter however she died not long after she was born. Her mother was a geisha Hijikata was in a relationship with (Chizuru in geisha clothes is a reference to her). She realized that the Shinsengumi was more important to Hijikata than their relationship so they broke up. She eventually married another man but it was said she died young. because of this fact, it's my headcanon that Hijikata and Chizuru will eventually have a daughter and they'll name her Umeko. (￣︶￣ ) "Ume" means Plum Blossom and "Ko" means child. The Plum Blossom is said to be the real-life Hijikata's favorite flower since he wrote a bunch of poems about the flower and had the flower painted or engraved on all his swords. If you look at Izuminokami Kanesada's design in Touken Ranbu you can see plum blossoms painted on his armor and in Hakuouki Yuugiroku they use a plum blossom motif instead of a cherry blossom one.
