Forging decorative hinges for our blacksmith shop

- We decided to forge some decorative hinges for our new blacksmith shop. They are similar to stag horn hinges combined with a penny end strap hinge. Mild steel was used starting with 1/4"X 1" stock.

Good Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very cool hinge 👍👍👍👍👍
Nice Work !!
Nice work, good stuff.
Nice job
Nicely done, thank you for sharing.
Those are terrific man
You are amazing.
Stress relief 1800's style
Fun stuff
Okay the hand cranked drill press I did not expect
Cool
nice post drill!
Thanks! Though punching is becoming my preferred method.
The stone anvil doesn't have a high pitched tone that pierces the ear. Its sounds like it absorbs the shock very well. Also Well done on that decorative hinge looks great.
Very nice Mr. C, thank you.
Nice
This is the best craftsmanship video format on RUclips. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I also love reading the closed captions.
Excellent as always.
It must be so satisfying to make something so beautiful with your own hands, a little hard work and some time.
Great blacksmith ship you have made. 👍
Damn fine work
Great video 👍
Now that’s a nice Hinge!
Nice drill!! (And work, obviously) :)
Wonderful job. So vulnerable to show your lack of e experience and at the same time perseverance. I would say your parants did a good job with you. Best of luck from Ontario Canada.
Really well done!
could watch this all day!
That has to be the most solid sounding anvil i have ever heard. Almost zero ring. Congratulations on all the work that went into making that base. It most certainly sounds worth it as i imagine feels worth it as well.
It feels like beating on a mountain.
Check out BlackBearForge, (John Switzer) his anvil is somehow even quieter (more quiet ?) than Josh's.
so soothing to watch...
True craftsman....
just a few suggestions jarhead.
1) I have a soft plate for cutting that sets in the hardy hole, it does not move around when cutting
2) a hold fast in the pritcher hole will hold your work from moving as you cut it as well.
excellent work as usual.
semper fi.
Yep, lots of tooling in the future, just trying to get the doors on the smithy for now!
I love how you explain everything without words! Thank you.
I have tons of RESPECT for you as a craftsman.
You are so good at so many things its mind boggling.
Greetings from Finland, and Utah, USA!
Beautiful design of the hinge👍👍👍👍
That drill press is nothing less than a work of art!
it is lovely no?
Omg! That drill press was awesome!
Amazing work, as usual.
Thank you
Beautiful finished hinge. Excellent work as usual. I remember a similar drill press in my father’s shop some 70 years ago. Greetings from the Canary Islands.
We have an almost identical drill press in our shop. I do envy your blower set up though. I’m sure it’s much easier on the shoulder.
It is a pure joy to use, almost like a slow dance sway back and forth, quite unlike the squarrel cage hand crank I had before....
Mr. Chickadee I’m left handed so I hammer and crank the blower with the same arm...I’m going to lobby to build a blower like your.
That's the first time I've seen anyone forge Ram's horns that way! Very efficient way of doing it! Look forward to seeing more of your forging work.
I really like the looks of hand forged hinges! They really have character and a personality of the maker that manufactured hinges could never have!
Looks like that drill press works better than I ever thought possible!
I’ve seen them when I was very young but never thought of them being a good device for drilling!
Awesome
Thank you 😊
One down and 3 to go. Very beautiful hinge and so appropriate to forge hinges for your blacksmith shop.
I guess the door latches are next.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
i really enjoyed that!
Very nicely done. The stone anvil base is working like a charm.
Beautiful 😘🌷
That drill press is awesome!!!!! nice work as always
That is beautiful!
nice
Thanks
Amazing job. When you put that bit in the drill chuck, I thought you was going to hit the on button. Then it showed the wall mount hand crank drill , I laughed out loud with joy. You never disappoint.
I was expecting the same 😅
Me too. I laughed and said Fantastic, a hand drill press, sweet!
I just told my daughter who is an expert and professional and talented photographer how each of your videos, themselves, are works of art about your works of art.
Looks like a hot chisel might be a good project in the near future. Bet your hand got really hot holding that chisel. :)
a glove would help for sure!
you just keep em coming. Great videos man.
Love it.
I've seen you work with wood, metal and stone. It's all impressive. I've been restoring my grandfather's old hand tools that he had for wood and stone work and just gotten to a point where I can start using them. I've got a good woodworking book but not a book for forging or masonry. Do you have any recommendations for those two? I've been doing leather work for a couple years now and would love to see what you can do with it yourself considering you're a natural with craftsmanship
Nice video.
The hinge looks great.
Nice work.
Thanks for another great video
Good start Josh, I look forward to many more creations, good place to be in the Winter............ Take Care...........
Sir, i junst wanna say that i wish that you will post many forging videos from now on
You are a talented smith
We all KNEW he would be awesome at it, right!?!?
Absolutely! He never fails!
Beautiful! Would it be a lot less work to just go to the store and buy one? Just kidding!!! That Is an extraordinarily unique and beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece.
For now, I believe he can and will make the other hinge/s to match, at least to the blind eye. A micrometer will likely be necessary to verify any difference.
Nice process, beautiful hinges.
In the English tradition the ornate elements are on the door, not on the frame. This has a penny-ended tee or pin hinge look to the door part of the hinge (ie relatively plain) with the frame-mounted part being decorative. Are you following a historic precedent, and if so, which?
Ni historic precedent, just following my heart and hands...
Great job Josh, you take pride in all your work. You’re doing a great job in your Smithy Shop. Thanks for sharing with us.
Beautifully done, Mister! We’re always so mesmerized by watching your films. Keep it up, Dude!
Beautiful work -- like everything else you do.
And speaking of beauty, we haven't seen Mrs. Chickadee in any of your videos for quite a while. Get her to teach you how to use the camera so you can film her for a change. I'm sure she must do video-worthy things around the homestead too!
I have never seen a drill quite like that, it's brilliant. I saw one that used a cam like that one, but it looked a bit more modern, it drove a wheel round the top like that one, except the cam drove a cam on the side of the handle which if you were turning the handle by hand would not have been so nice as the round edge of the handle/wheel had teeth in it. I like the style of your one as well. Nice looking hinges, they don't make them like that anymore.
Nicely done hinge. So one, two, or three more? (One door with two or three hinges, or two doors with two hinges each?).
I could just imagine the horrible contorted mess it would look like if I did that.
Nice to finally see that drill press. I'm extremely jealous.
It is a steep learning curve, but also a fast one!
Mr. Chickadee I'll try this stuff one day, in a couple years when I have the money to buy some land, but I'm not sure the curve will be quite so steep for me.
I can build stuff, but I've never had a great eye for proportion. Haunted me through years of fly tying. I'm dying to do a little blacksmithing though. Even if it sucks. Just to do it.
Josh
I love your spirit and adventure in all you do. Look at a few more video on welding the joints. Your hinge was just amazing for the first but it would be a lot stronger with joints that will not pull apart. If too much weight be put on that hinge it will stretch out on the weight.
Thanks for the comment
Over my head. If you have a lecture on the topic that can explain to beginners, let me know
On a different note, did you spend time on Okinawa? Is that where your Asian styles come from?
You, sir, are the master.
I truly enjoy these videos as a former Marine and the son of a Peruvian I feel a connection with you both!
Chico : Thank you for your service as well! God Bless.
I too enjoy these videos as the son of a biker and a former used car salesman.. not sure what our parental history or previous work experience has to do with watching youtube videos but as long as we're sharing.

Mr. Chickadee is a Marine (once a Marine always a Marine) and his wife is Peruvian.
We have a drill press on the farm just like that one
It's the only other one I've ever seen
Can you tell us the name of the company which made this drill press? Thank you in advance!
You're da best!
Good job. Like 👍from Siberia
Как говорят у меня на родине:Дело мастера боится!👍
👍 perfect!
Nice work as always. Love your simple vides
Very nice work 👍✌️
Great to see you keeping up ancient craft-those are some swinging hinges bro!
The thing I like a bout your shop is it's off grid if the electric goes out you keep going.
13:30- did you get the extended 150 year warranty when you bought the drill press or are you going bare with it? ☺
Actually, I think he BUILT it! It is pretty amazing, though! I tell you, our forefathers were really quite ingenious, in the way they solved problems & did things for themselves, instead of just buying anything they needed! Superb!
@@flurng he did not make it: it is a antique blacksmith post drill. It would be very hard to cast iron on a amateur level.
lmao when you zoomed in on the drill finishing the first hole I could literally smell it. Guess that means I'm a machinist to my blood.
Well i enjoyed this video as well! The hinges have a very medieval look (meant as a compliment!)
Wondering how many professions you are mastering...
well done!
Fine work and craftsmanship. The design is superb. I love the drill press. What era is it?
Late 1800s
Frick’n awesome
Show us what you put those hinges on. It's fun watching you create.
ok
Even more fun to watch, then go out I to the shop and try to replicate his smaller creations. (I don't have room for the buildings themselves with just at 0.6 of an acre and 5 out buildings already).
Nice as Allways, I Had a Drill Press Just Like yours, It was the "Combo Special, you could put the Leather Belt on,(If you had a Motor!,), Some guy Bought it to make a Mail Box Holder, It was "Sick Money" Could not have turned it DOWN!!!!!! THANKS FOR ANOTHER SUPER VID!
👍
Awesome 😎
Agree with Peter White Jr. Every hammer blow sounds solid, no ring.
What fuel do you use .on the forge do you use anthracite . There doesn't seem to be any smoke
Charcoal, ideally from pine
Your anvil is so quiet the base you built for it is awesome and the post drill press is pretty sweet!
Heck yea man..
I don't know how long that you have been forging but it appears to be a long time. Nice job with the hinge. As always love your channel
Very nice. How must rust do you predict on mild steel with the large eaves? Just curious about using wrought iron in future for outdoor projects instead of mild steel. Are all forms of wrought iron rust resistant or just the formulations specifically made for rust resistant properties?
Routine oiling of the building will take care of the rust. Wrought iron is to some degree more rust resistant, though even mild steel will last forever if treated right.
Excellent video, as always. Was that an owl at the top of the tree?
I think so!
The Mr. Chickadee Method: Calm Intensity.
12:43 is that drill table just a drill or does it actually drill-press?
Oh it sure does! It has a little lever that presses down on a ratcheting wheel with each rotation.
Crafting goat head hinges for the goat barn doors he's building next.
