This is too cool! Thanks for putting it out there. You can’t ask for a better free resource. I’m not at all ready to take sides…it’s cool enough to me to hear that they’re different.
Also, awesome job putting this out with some tough excerpts that showcase all the registers and articulations. You’re laying it on the line!

I'd love to hear a test of budget versions of bassoons, for example Fox Renard 240D vs Moosmann 150E vs Monnig 214 "Topas" vs Kronwalt

Wow, you really don't hear much difference between them? The Heckel sounds stuffy (or more distant?) next to the Bell to me. In a pretty big way. I was genuinely surprised by the sound of the Heckel even on the C scale after hearing the Bell.

C scale on Heckel seemed a bit awkward.

Alot more similar than I expected 😯 but you can definitely tell the difference in the higher range

Seems in higher range intonation is easier on the Bell.

Super interesting to hear! I'm so glad you made this comparison. They are certainly different instruments. As always, really depends on the player's goals and desires. Did you have a sense that one instrument was "easier" to play on than the other? I found this component of trialing instruments to be one that became quite important. Some instruments achieve the same sound/tone but are simply easier to get to the desired final product.

    Hey, congratulations!
The Bell sounds very even already!
I’ve got a late 7000 Heckel, and I’m looking for a darker and more even alternative. How does it feel compared to a newer Heckel?

The Heckel sounds more bright and buzzy while the Bell is less so. Truly similar to the difference between traditional contrabassoon & contraforte.

They both sound great. Which is less work to play? Playing with conviction is more important. If it's easier the more confidence you will have.

Thanks for this comparison video. I much preferred the Heckel to the Bell. I believe the Heckel produces a much more complex and interesting collection of colors. The Bell seems much more homogenous and, therefore, duller to my ear. The Heckel sounds open and free. The Bell sounds a little squelched--as though one had a hand over the mouth while speaking. Just my opinion. I believe the Heckel would project one's musical ideas more clearly out into the concert hall because of the openness, malleability, and varied colors of the sound.

Здравствуйте я если честно не разбираюсь в фагот,но мне очень нравится звук темного инструмента .Это Heckel или Bell?

Siento que el Bell es más oscuro, puede ser por eso que se entienda menos en los pasajes más rápidos, también creo que la acústica del lugar no sirva mucho

The Heckel had more clarity to the sound, more expressive with a sweeter sound. The bell in fast passages seemed muddy where the Heckel was very clear I could hear every note!

almost no difference in timbre. but the tchaik 6th sound a bit richer in sound than the bell. hopefully the bell gets better after breaking in, although Benson stating no "break in" needed.

well. there isn´t a big diference between that two Instrument.
i only can say that, Bell Bocal are not good, said by B. Bell. and my best friend play Bell with a Heckel Bocal and its make a big diference. its my opinion

There are good and bad Heckels, and there are good and bad Bells. Videos like this are merely comparing instruments, not brands. Bassoons are far more unique than other instruments and comparisons like this do a disservice to the wide variability of this wonderful instrument.
