Modern Minds were an influential punk rock/new wave band from Calgary (Alberta), Canada. Although only together for a short period of time from 1980 to 1981, they quickly developed a local following and gigged with many other important contemporary western Canadian punk bands such as Pointed Sticks, Rock and Roll Bitches & The Modernettes. As it was difficult achieving success in such a small community as Calgary, the band split in early 1981, with members going on to other projects of varying degrees of success. Bassist Bob Drysdale joined the Rock and Roll Bitches, while main songwriter/guitarist and primary vocalist Moe Berg started several follow-up groups in Calgary, the most notable being Facecrime, which managed to achieve some recognition with their song "Did I Hear You Right?" (from the 1983 compilation 'It Came From Inner Space') and a well-received 1984 EP called "Sex and Revolution". However, It wasn't until 1985 when Berg and Facecrime drummer Dave Gilby moved to Toronto that their big break came when they formed the group The Pursuit Of Happiness that would go on to record 5 albums and have multiple hit singles between the years of 1986 and 1996.
While initially seeming to be just an interesting footnote in Moe Berg's 40+ year career as a prolific Canadian musician, Modern Minds had a surprising resurgence in popularity in the last few years. Their only officially released recording (the three-song single "Theresa's World") along with some additional demos recorded in 1980 were released as a full length CD 'The Modern Minds' in Japan in 2007 and retitled "Go" were finally given a proper Canadian release over a decade later in 2018.
