Beast mode. Ahh to be young again. I plunge cut those big rounds and sit on one as I use wedges and 3 pound hammer to bust them into quarters then start swinging away. Love the red oak. 23 inches damn you are a beast.
My red oak is Gnarly, Knotty, and is hard to split. I may have to invest into a log splitter. Cause my shoulder want let me work like i use to. I love my 6 pound maul. i got a 4 for smaller wood and a 8 for big logs. And some times, i have to use the diamond wedge, to get them where i can start splitting them with the mauls
Never chopped wood before. Recently grabbed a few large logs of pine for free. About the same size as in this video. Got an old splitting maul. Can't split them. Just making big dents and splitting the wood in very tiny "strips" that would make good kindling when dried for a year or so. Is there any reason pine cut in the last month would be harder to split? Or is it just my technique must be wrong? I mean, I am NOT swinging as hard as I possibly could since one I don't have steel toe boots at the moment 2 there isn't a whole lot of room to work where I am doing it and if it slipped from my hands I could likely smash something unintended. Is it very dumb to do this without steel toe boots?
It may be the species of pine or the pine you have is full of knots. If the wood is not straight grained it can be brutal. Maybe try a steel wedge and a sledge hammer or ripping them in half with a chainsaw then try splitting. Some wood we use an actual wood spitter because it is to gnarly. Yes we do wear steel toe boots.
@@thebeardedcatholic That was indeed the way to go. Got a cone wedge from Lowes and used my sledge. Still gotta swing pretty hard but that did the trick. Never done this before. It's oddly satisfying when you get that hit directly before the hit that finishes it. Where you hear faint cracking like someone is walking on ice.....follow up swing and the whole log busts in half. Good workout thats for sure...
@@ALetterP Good to here, there is something satisfying about splitting wood all around. If more of today's youth had the opportunity to split wood the world would be a better place.
Wasting energy pulling it over your head from behind you. Drop it from over head and bend your knees at the right time to get that perfect angle hit from the maul head- gravity assisted parrallel straight down energy saver split
My red oak has knots in it and I beat it to death. I also am using grenade wedges. It's been very tough. It's even still pretty wet to the touch when I get it split. got any pointers to make my life easier? I have been using a 6 and an 8 lb splitting ax and many times it even bounces back at me.
Wet is fine, we actually prefer splitting when green. Knots are a different story, if they're real bad we use hydraulics. Sometimes flip the wood to the other end and try. Also using a heavier 10# maul helps. The wood in the video is 23" long. And if all fails rip it with a chainsaw if it is big :)
Remember if the maul bounces off the log? ITS 1 OF 2 THINGS. The cutting wedge is to BLUNT or TO DULL >> These new maul are way to BLUNT! Grind them down slender boys and girls. Then they will start penetrating and splitting!
Very nice but super inefficient swing. You shouldn’t bring that maul all the way behind you like that, lots of lost efficiency. Press it up like a barbell then come down. And learning about where to strike the rounds and how to stand it back up with your maul will also prove beneficial. Young guy like that shouldn’t be breathing hard splitting just a few rounds. I’m sure his fitness is fine, it’s all about precision and efficiency. Hope that helps and Have fun.
Good effort in splitting the red oak. Makes really good firewood! Thank you for sharing.

I have the benefit of my 20 year old son behind the maul, dad behind the camera on this one:)
Dude's aim is on point!
Nice job splitting! Appreciate the content 🪓
GET ON IT! Good job! Great swing. Most of the axe related you tube channels have wimpy ass swings.
He's a tough lad, full of energy 💪
He's in his element
Nice job god bless
Thanks, I'd take a team of boys like this!
G.D. !!! You was swingen like HELL !!!
Nice work
Very nice. Dude kicked it’s ass!
Tough kid
This is awesome
My son is a hard worker :)
Always split red oak if you want it to dry out.
That's for sure!

We use hydraulic for the nasty stuff
@@thebeardedcatholic Cool But it burn the best, Slow and hot. So does the bark. I use it to

Dude makes it look so easy
Straight grain red oak os the way to go...
Where can I get a job splitting wood? It looks like one hell of a workout and I'm down for some.
No need to pay for a gym membership 💪
🔥
I split red oak last fall nice, I have the same maul but 8#. I don’t go that fast but I am 71....it’s doesn’t have as many nots as white oak
Keep up the good work, and yes red over white anytime
Good splitting
I did not know you can get a 10lb splitting maul.
Maybe it's an eight, for some reason thought eight head, ten overall.

@@thebeardedcatholic I agree sometimes these knots are stronger than all mainkind!! Thanks for the feedback!

Good tip, 3rd reason, knots!
@@thebeardedcatholic Yep 👍👍
Huge waste of energy being the maul all the way behind your back for each swing.
He's 18 and has lots of energy :)
Brother!! you're losing a lot of momentum and downward acceleration with that technique.
My son has extra energy to burn, but note taken :)
Your Oldman did it waaaay better.
