Picked up a 2022 Stelvio Quad last month after spending weeks obsessing over the Macan. No regets whatsoever. It definitely feels like the more special car, despite not having as prestigious of brand recognition.

Believe me my friend Alfa Romeo is well recognized, not the cars specifically but the brand itself, they seen it or heard of it, I have one in the states The Stelvio 2021 and I get complicates left and right, Especially every time I Valet park. Cant say the same about compliments when I was driving the Merc E Class 2019 AMG package few years back.

Best car reviews on RUclips. True...there is something about the Giulia QV and if I was to need an SUV it would be the Stelvio. My QV is a 2018, and even though I own a 911 GT3 and 911 GTS, I have to force myself to drive them because the Giulia gives me joy and I want to laugh out loud when I drive it. I'm going to buy a 2024 just because it will be the last.
At a guess, the audio only works on a full surround system, as they have mixed the voices to left and right channels only and they need centre so you can hear it on a laptop. Watching on a laptop was terrible and casting to TV with surround sound was just about OK, although it does need centre audio for dialog.
So easy to be rude online. Volume comments are valid (on mobile speakers anyway) but I liked this thoughtful conversation, this is how you'd actually discuss a car comparison with a mate. So many other motoring review styles out there, just watch what you like.
Yes the Macan seems a safer pick. The exterior look is a bit more accepted. But it is extremely boring vs the Alfa. Ive owned my Stelvio QV for a couple months and its the most fun ever. I love the exhaust notes, the giant paddle shifters are amazing. And best part of it, very rare to see another Alfa on the road, yet alone a Quadrifoglio
It’s like listening to it from feet away😟, it’s that quiet, hard to hear, for that reason I’m not concentrating hard enough to hear it, I don’t know if this video is trimmed down post production, but, you’d think clarity of sound, there voices would be a priority?

And technically, they can charge whatever they want because they have 70+ years of racing history and make the best cars in the world. actually the then Porsche 924 was compated to the new Alfetta Gt in 1975 (both rear transaxle), and again with the Porsche 944 and Alfetta GTV6 (again both rear transaxle), with reviewers on road and track split between both for different reasons, but Alfa Romeo engineering then was very advanced and competely in house compared to the VW/Audi parts on the Porsche.

I would say vice versa if you look the history, Macan isn't technically another level, I would say its sublevel and not the worth of Porsche name, its awful interior wise and quality isn't anywear near the best Porsches.

Depends on what you value more, polish or character. They made the point well that the Stelvio may be SLIGHTLY deficient in some areas, but the exciting character makes it all worthwhile. I almost wish the Stelvio had a long travel suspension and could take it on fire roads. THAT would such a hoot!

Meanwhile the Stelvio looks like a timeless classic. Gorgeous curves and lines. Sounds fantastic as well. Would take the Alfa over the boring German Q5/Macan. The Macan just isn’t special and maybe that comes down to it being essentially an Audi Q5

There really is no comparison. Cross shopped both. X3M is far too stiff and uncomfortable as a daily driver. Macan GTS has all the power you need and want, with the polish and prestige.
These are a surprisingly interesting comparison. I went with the Macan Turbo, which as they say does feel the better car, but you really have to try to make it feel RWD and not just grip (but it doesn't understeer either). For me the tipping points were the PDK (I'm sick of the zf8 in my X3 and don't want another slushbox right now, no matter how well tuned), air suspension to allow high and low ride heights, and the Stelvio Quad would have cost about $10k more (I was shopping the oldest models of each available in the US, and the Macans been around longer), with the Stelvio looking worse on depreciation. However, dynamically, the Stelvio does edge it out with a more rwd feel, at the expense of some day to day comfort.
This review was spoilt by VERY VERY BAD QUALITY audio - it was muffled, barely distinguishable & had a very poor & ultra-compressed frequency range - NOT at all what I was expecting from Autocar - seems as though there was NO final quality control checks at all before it was published & uploaded to RUclips.
Much prefer the respectful even- handedness of the British auto journalists versus the snarky and often infantile shock jock attitude of most American car testers.
This review needs emotions! It is dull and sound quality needs improvement. Having said that, I agree with the result, Porsche is the better built and overall better car but Alfa Romeo wins because of the driving dynamics and the whole driving experience...I bought a 2020 Quadrifoglio and love it, it is such as pleasure to drive it and throw it on the corners, it loves to understeer! You guys didn't comment how much faster the Quadrifoglio is when compared to the Macan, I feel it is an important fact.
I cross-shopped these two to no end. Ultimately settled on the Macan with no regrets. Lots to love on the Alfa but the subpar quality of interior and overall finishes and depreciation outlook were deal breakers for me.

A rather odd verdict, if you don't mind me saying...! "... you could easily live with the Stelvio..." That's not exactly "high praise" for a car that costs £10,000 MORE than the Porsche...!! 😵
Having owned air suspension Range Rovers and suffered their maladies , having owned an early Lexus Cygness with air suspension that failed too , you can keep your air suspended sportified Audi Q5 with a Stuttgart emblem , I am so anti air suspension because , it is inherrenty unreliable , steel suspension does not go into a default mode or deflate without reason , does not ride on its bump stops when the shocks are worn , truly , air suspension is an unreliable toy .
IMO, it's very important that such a car is comfortable in day-to-day driving around town and on the motorway, which is most likely where it will spend >95% of its life for 90% of its drivers. If you're in the small minority of Macan customers, who have the opportunity to exploit the handling dynamics far more regularly, then you may well be prepared to compromise, but I personally would not, because a firm ride around town is not in anyway a "slight" difference or compromise, IMO. I strongly argue that the whole idea of electronically-controlled suspension is to offer a choice between great comfort and great handling, and maybe in-between. If great comfort is not on offer in the comfort setting, it is my firm belief that the manufacturer has failed to deliver what it should. Furthermore, if a German manufacturer has delivered a comfortable ride, when German roads are among the best, while an Italian manufacturer has not done so, when Italian roads are among the worst in Europe, not that dissimilar to British roads, it tells you something about the difference in the level of engineering sophistication, and in this case, the difference in the underlying platform. Lastly, if you want a sports car, where a firm ride is expected, that's what you should buy. IMO, when buying an SUV such as these two, most customers want a sports car engine in their SUV, and if they are logical, are not expecting sports car handling, but they do expect the vehicle to ride comfortably when doing the everyday things; and for most buyers of these two, the weekends will predominantly invlove a partner and kids, who will also expect comfort. Quite simply, everyday comfort is a higher priority than the nine and tenth tenth in the handling department when buying such a vehicle, at least for most buyers, many of whom are buying prestige more than anything else.
What a bad review. Matt Fryer just bumbling on about nothing. So the Porsche is better but they would buy the Alfa. I have driven both and in my opinion the Porsche is far superior in all ways. Polar opposites in quality. Also you can lower the Porsche via a button on the Center consumer..
The Giulia QV is a wonderful car. But it’s not a 5-door with fold-flat rear seats and semi-permanent 4WD. So why, once again, the predictable car hacks’ platitudes / snobbery comparison re. 5-door SUVs vs 4-door saloons? Horses for courses, mate(s). Anyhoo, the Stelvio is the cool, classy choice whereas the Macan is the predictable (Audi-in-drag) aspirant’s choice. It’s a huge shame very few have bought / will buy the Alfa. Sheep!
Yes! If the Giulia had a hatchback and AWD, then I likely would prefer that, but alas, it’s a crappy 4dr sedan. For me, sedans are such a waste of space, I’m far more likely to carry cargo than people.

The macan is very boring to look at in comparison to the stelvio , I park near a stelvio regularly it is a handsome beast of a car alot more presence than the macan but the Porsche will out sell it 10 fold

What did you buy at the end ?
You should have done this comparison with the BASE model of each of these cars. As you've stated, no one needs that much power in a small SUV.

0-60, the Macan is slightly faster due to the PDK transmission being Amazing. But on the high end, Quad def faster.

IMO, it's very important that such a car is comfortable in day-to-day driving around town and on the motorway, which is most likely where it will spend >95% of its life for 90% of its drivers. If you're in the small minority of Macan customers, who have the opportunity to exploit the handling dynamics far more regularly, then you may well be prepared to compromise, but I personally would not, because a firm ride around town is not in anyway a "slight" difference or compromise, IMO.
I strongly argue that the whole idea of electronically-controlled suspension is to offer a choice between great comfort and great handling, and maybe in-between. If great comfort is not on offer in the comfort setting, it is my firm belief that the manufacturer has failed to deliver what it should. Furthermore, if a German manufacturer has delivered a comfortable ride, when German roads are among the best, while an Italian manufacturer has not done so, when Italian roads are among the worst in Europe, not that dissimilar to British roads, it tells you something about the difference in the level of engineering sophistication, and in this case, the difference in the underlying platform.
Lastly, if you want a sports car, where a firm ride is expected, that's what you should buy. IMO, when buying an SUV such as these two, most customers want a sports car engine in their SUV, and if they are logical, are not expecting sports car handling, but they do expect the vehicle to ride comfortably when doing the everyday things; and for most buyers of these two, the weekends will predominantly invlove a partner and kids, who will also expect comfort. Quite simply, everyday comfort is a higher priority than the nine and tenth tenth in the handling department when buying such a vehicle, at least for most buyers, many of whom are buying prestige more than anything else.

What a bad review. Matt Fryer just bumbling on about nothing. So the Porsche is better but they would buy the Alfa. I have driven both and in my opinion the Porsche is far superior in all ways. Polar opposites in quality. Also you can lower the Porsche via a button on the Center consumer..

The Giulia QV is a wonderful car. But it’s not a 5-door with fold-flat rear seats and semi-permanent 4WD.
So why, once again, the predictable car hacks’ platitudes / snobbery comparison re. 5-door SUVs vs 4-door saloons? Horses for courses, mate(s).
Anyhoo, the Stelvio is the cool, classy choice whereas the Macan is the predictable (Audi-in-drag) aspirant’s choice.
It’s a huge shame very few have bought / will buy the Alfa. Sheep!
Yes! If the Giulia had a hatchback and AWD, then I likely would prefer that, but alas, it’s a crappy 4dr sedan. For me, sedans are such a waste of space, I’m far more likely to carry cargo than people.
Terrible sound quality and low production standards. They need to up their game or they’ll be left behind by other channels with better content more professionally produced.

The macan is very boring to look at in comparison to the stelvio , I park near a stelvio regularly it is a handsome beast of a car alot more presence than the macan but the Porsche will out sell it 10 fold

I'm an Alfa fan and owner of a (Busso) V6 GTV, so it hurts me to say that even if Stelvio is better to drive, this Porsche V6 sounds much better.
