As an addendum, a group of fans managed to buy the rights to the code of Starfleet Command 2, and worked on the game (and servers) to make it play on modern systems! Their site is Dynaverse.net. New copies of the Community Edition are around $6, but if you have the retail boxed versions of the game, you can download the Community Edition patch for free!
Very cool episode! One of my faves now! Feeling motivated to search out some of the old books; Only played a bit of SFB but I was building fleets of plastic and metal minis long before Micro Machines came along! I've watched and rewatched this episode so many times! This is chock-full of good info! I regret passing on getting more of the SFB when I saw some at a store; hard to find now! I had some pdf scans of some of FASA's rpg books and used them to augment & inform the Trek campaign I was running using White Wolf Games Studio's World of Darkness. God willing, i'll eventually track down copies of the ISC books! Captain Foley, Thank You for this episode!
This was a pleasure to watch! I've been playing and following SFB since 1981, and enjoyed the chance to learn more about Josh Spencer's contributions to the game. You guys had a great rapport together, and I'm looking forward to exploring the other Trekyard videos you've made. I'll also be looking you up on the Facebook page.
New to your channel, found by accident, been watching a lot of previous videos. Thank you for a great channel love it. And for this episode, thank you for a walk down memory lane as I played both of these games. Keep up the good work!
Great video and cool to see Josh Spencer who designed stuff for both games :). I was like you grew up with this game and it actually got me started into minature wargaming :).
MY GOD! I love this Spencer, Dude! Not about the game but someone who's heard of, who remembers Wendy O Williams, The Plasmatics. I think I was about 10 when I first heard Jailbait with Motorhead, so yeah... That and applying a hedonistic philosophy to Star Trek, I grew up twisted. Just a bit. Well done, Mr. Spencer!
I really like this channel. It brings back memories of when my friends and i played star fleet battle! BTW have you seen the MOD for the PC game "sins of a solar empire rebellion" called Star Trek Armada 3 Call to Arms? Those guy did an awesome job capturing the spirit of Star Trek in this game.
I did play some SFB in the 80's, still have some used SSD's tucked away in a filing cabinet somewhere. These days I get my starship combat fix with Ad Astra Game's _Squadron Strike,_ which has mechanics for full 3D representation on a tabletop map, and even with seeking weapons in use, my experience is that turns play out remarkably quickly.
I grew up playing Starfleet Command 1 (Base Game alone sadly) I would love to get into Star Fleet Battles... but it's so expensive, as someone who would want ALL the modules.
What I didn't hear mentioned is the ISC ships were intentionally made better than the same class of ship of other races. They were designed to be OP in game. It's part of their in game 'story'. It's also why the ISC are were so good in the Starfleet Command games.
I had bought the Starfleet Battles boxed game hack in 1983 or so. I bought the Starfleet Command game, I think in 2000 when I bought my 1st Computer a HP Pavilion. When our group 1st got into playing, we 5 of us and I played Kzinti at 1st but switched to Romulan. I think it was 1984 when out Federation Player switched to ISC. ISC were invincible and I don't think ISC lost a game.
Really love this topic and your show I am a new subscriber. Is there any chance you guys could get a hold of the original writers for the Operation Armagedon book from Fasa? I really want to know if there is a rough draft existing out there somewhere? This showed up in the Fasa 87 catalog but never released before Fasa got their license pulled. Thanks
Wonderful episode everyone. Personally i was never too impressed by SFB, too sssslllllooooowwwwww. I was a big fan of the ST tactical starship simulator.
Nothing matches a Romulan Firehawk screaming in with loaded Rs', throwing plasmas like snowballs at a creeping Gorn dreadnaught then doing a hard port turn and running from the girls own plasmas. Won many battles this way of SFC2.
I've just read on ADB's Facebook page that Josh Spencer passed away a few days ago.
Rest in Peace.
Remember, if you have Starfleet Command 1,2,or Orion Pirates, you are playing a digital version of Star Fleet Battles!

***** All of SFC was based on SFB. When I realized that I was in hog heaven

Great episode. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I loved the FASA RPG and Tactical Simulator games.

Well thank you for following us. Please join the Facebook page and subscribe.
And no need to thank us, We love this stuff, so it was our pleasure.
RIP Josh. Josh passed away last year due to his illness. his contribution to the SFB community will be missed.
Loved FASA brings back great memories
Wow, awesome, the ISC are my favorite race to play, closely followed by the Hydrans.

I liked the NCL and CLC as well.
I still have my FASA books, but I wish I had kept the SFB ones.
I love both games.
7:15 While talking about the ISC and their Plasmatic Pulsar Device they show images of the Andromedans firing their Tractor-Repulsor beams.
love you guys
I would like to know the genius who designed the Romulan V-30 Winged Defender from FASA.
I grew up playing Starfleet Command 1 (Base Game alone sadly) I would love to get into Star Fleet Battles... but it's so expensive, as someone who would want ALL the modules.

Why the heck are they showing ADB Adromadans when talking about the ISC?

Ah..the ISC..one of my favorite races from the SFB game. They were a lot of fun to play at the large fleet level.

I had fasa when I was growing up but it got ruined in a flood, is it still possible to find these anywhere?
I love this show!
Can someone please tell me how you can get Lord Schtupp's patches for the Starfleet Command games?
Funnily enough, I kinda like the Old Light Cruiser.
James Trexler I do too. One of the few ships that has actual flavour.
with th'Daedalus Class Light Cruiser, it has a different, primitive look, I have a Province-Class Miniature.
FASA title looks like F9S9. Is it just me or....???
Anyway very interesting episode in the history of ST board games before there was ST online games.
Wonderful episode everyone. Personally i was never too impressed by SFB, too sssslllllooooowwwwww. I was a big fan of the ST tactical starship simulator.
Why invent so many new ships and classes. Some also look a bit silly.
But a nice introduction.
D-Scipio For the same reasons wet navies have cruisers, light cruisers, destroyers frigates and dreadnoughts. Flexibility of mission and economics.
Nothing matches a Romulan Firehawk screaming in with loaded Rs', throwing plasmas like snowballs at a creeping Gorn dreadnaught then doing a hard port turn and running from the girls own plasmas.

Aaah, SFB! You don't need a Juris Doctorate or an engineering degree to play it... come to think of it, they may not help, either.
