HP Photosmart 3210 Printer Head Cleaning

  • A modern HP hardware video for once, but it has good retro stuff as a reward if you stick to the end. My HP 3210 Photosmart inkjet clogged and repeated head cleaning cycles would not help. I could not find any instructions on how to clean the head manually - and for good reason, the head is not removable in this machine, so this was really difficult. Attempt at your own risk. For public service value, here is how I did it. Turns out part of the head cleaning mechanism was actually broken, which probably caused both clogging and ink flooding problems. I suspect that must have happened to the many other users complaining online about the same symptoms. Then after I repaired it and unclogged the heads and ink tubes, one of my cartridges went empty. I got the dreaded, non-resettable, "ink system has failed error 0xc18a0206" (which is misleading printer techno-babble for: your cartridge is empty sooner than I expected)! And there is apparently no way to reset this. Actually there was. Not shown in the video, see instructions below on how to clear this. All is good in the end, as usual, but don't forget to see what happens after that...
So here are some very important secret key combinations for the HP 3210 and related units:
Clearing the infamous "ink system has failed 0xc18a0206" error message (provided you unclogged the heads beforehand): hold cancel and OK while you power down, and keep holding while you power back up until it eventually powers down again. Then press power on, you'll enter the OOB NVRAM reset and launch a long clean and reset of the inkjet system. If the system is unclogged, the crippling error will be cleared.
Advanced firmware menus access: press the left and right arrows arrows together. Then enter one of three codes:
    1,2,3
    1,2,4
    1,2,7
Each leads to a different advanced firmware menu which you can navigate using the left and right arrow , OK and cancel keys. You can even restart the machine in manufacturing maintenance mode (at your own risk, I did not try!).

Your expression of what HP once stood for is a sentiment I've tried to hold onto as well. Back in the 80's HP was indeed king. It was the one of the defacto gold standards of quality, precision and longevity. Though their modern pieces of plastic (pronounced crap) are still engineering marvels, it seems their attitude towards quality and serviceability have fallen sadly to the wayside. I guess we were lucky to see them in their prime!

David, I totally have to agree with you... I've had multiple printers, both HP and Epson... and they were made to be able to remove and clean the heads... at one time you could even just order replacement heads and if under warranty they were FREE... Some of the new Cannon printers have heads you can easily remove and clean... My biggest complaint is that they don't keep their software Drivers up to date, which shouldn't take that much effort, which you could keep your printer going as long as it was functional.

Nice to see a restore instead of more plastic electronics filling our dump sites. Good job!

THATS WHAT THAT NOISE WAS! our old printer always used to make that fast noise while it was doing 'printer stuff'. could never figure it out, and it eventually got that darn error. this was almost 8 years ago, so instead of fixing it it was taken to a recycling center.

Hi Marc, thanks to your repair video I was indeed able to repair my HP 3310 Printer which is basically the same model! Guess what, the same actor broke and I had to flush the inksystem with alcohol, too. It worked like a charm and took my about 2 days to figure everything it out with your instructions. You really helped me a lot! :-)

The broken rocker you show is built in obsolescence. That and the cheap caps used on the control boards. Replaced my rockers with hand crafted ones (thicker less crack prone mat. ) and bought a cap kit to upgrade all caps. Learned a bunch about print head cleaning and off to the races she went. This printer needs to be used, letting it set leads to issues ( print test pages ). All that said though. the unit is an awesome multi color using unit. Still well supported in software ( as of 2020. win10 compatible). Down fall to the DIY is the inkwell. The inkwell inside this unit is painful to deep clean, and is below a bunch of functioning items. Designed to never be serviced, as much of printers seem to be. Inks for this type of HP are being discontinued, but this type of printer, with it ink head system already separate from its ink, is a great candidate for CISS usage. It doesn't require internal ink feed to the heads like almost all others. Head cleaning vids are on youtube and very useful. Just use it and avoid the need.

Many HP of the era have the broken lift arms. A fantastic printer mine has been, aside from those. Has lasted about 10 years lol. CNC machined arms made of soft aluminum would make a ton of old units good to go for those that enjoyed them enough to save them.
my 5180 has a hand made arm in it made from snowmobile track slide/ high density plastic. IKR, to funny. But it works well.
ink system failure error messages once fixed can be cleared. Then they run like new as long as the ink systems not dry or plugged.

Interesting. I have a similar problem with my Photosmart 3210. Though all my colours are broken and paper gets drips of ink on them on the front and back. Watching this video maybe I will take a look at repairing it even though I have never repaired a printer before. :)

Do you have or can you make a tutorial video on how to replace the paper pick up rollers on an HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-one printer? It was working great until it stopped picking up the paper from the tray. It is the best printer that I ever had. Thanks.

I got one of these for $15 at the thrift store. Unit is pretty clean inside for printing 10,000 pages! I cleaned the cartridge head and after that didn't help I tried your method. Unfortunately I ran out of ink so I have to wait a week for cheap ink to arrive. I hope the isopropyl stuck in the tubing doesn't ruin anything, but so far the only test page it printed looked great.

At 8:52, when you pumped into it, it looks like it dripped out from where you pumped.. but what about the inside? Did the alcohol go into the other end? if so where? Did u put tissue there too? Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem with that printer. In my case the epoxy didn't hold, so I made a little bracket out of scrap aluminum and attached it to the nylon see-saw with two #2 screws and hardware. It lasted two years and just died again about a week ago. I think I'm going to strip out the steppers and toss the poor plastic carcass!

Wonderful to see someone with such expertise!! I have no experience taking apart a printer so I would have liked to see more detailed steps on how to do that but luckily I was able to take it apart. I was wondering what did you use to cleverly defeat the open door message? What does that piece have to make contact with? I am stuck at that step. It looks like my printer has the same problem as yours. The exact same piece is broken. What epoxy do you recommend?

I used a strip of plastic. Can't remember if it pushed on a microswitch or if it was an optical sensor. For glue I used "plastic weld" epoxy.

Hi CuriousMarc. I have exactly the same issue. I want to replace the white piece that manage the ink flow (refer to min 4:41 in your video ;-)). Do you have the reference number at HP of the piece you replaced, so that I can order it too ? In case of out of stock (printer too old), I'm thinking to make it created with a 3D Printer. Thanks for your reply

Made a replacement using a high density plastic. I used a rotary tool after making a rough form, measured the shaft, drilled slightly smaller and it worked. So many old versions of this printer used this pre- print head arrangement that the entire assembly was purchasable used for cheap. So i do also have a used shaft with a good arm or 2 as well now. good luck, best wishes.

I love UR video, question I am at the turning on the printer, have everything lined up as shown in Vid, no power, I got the wire harness connected, what am I missing. Thank you the wonderful hope 4 this printer to work, after spending $42.00 on new ink, it is madding to spent money & have it break.

You should only need to reconnect the front panel. I'd check that the flex is well engaged in the connector first.

Exact same issue with my 3310, down the the broken rocker too, would be handy to know how you repaired that, as seems that is key for the life of the printer... could you do a video for that?

You're not supposed to clean with alcohol really. There are some ammonia based solutions available. Alcohol hardens the ink and can damage the heads.

So you do this for a living? I'm gonna "try" this and see what happens. I'm VERY frustrated with my printer(s)! Ink is a scam and THEY know it, that's why they only charge $50 for a NEW printer, then $15 for ORIGINAL ink, EACH cartridge!

This looks like HP looked at those continuous inking systems people were retro fitting onto printers for years. Then made it into a sellable product. And its also depressing to watch how shitty that thing is made. Coming from just watching your video on the HP 2631G.
