What the heck! 😁 I can see a couple of fellows have liked your comment, so I assume they agree. I was really careful on both shaves and had the same result. This only goes to prove that YMMV. The only thing more certain than this are taxes! Thanks Jimmy.
Well that has foxed me I have a DE 89 and had been looking at the 3one6. Like yourself I had the impression the 3one6 was more efficient than the DE89. I have felt for a while if you do 3 passes and pickups you end up with the same result with most razors so generally most razors are a side step. If you only do 2 passes then a more aggressive razor may be beneficial. Enjoyed the comparison certainly made me wonder if it's worth spending £90 to get the same result. Keep well and keep safe.
Hi Leslie. I must admit, it completely threw me. The comments are showing a little variation in other fellows experiences, that have the 3ONE6 as more efficient, but over two shaves, swapping the blade between the razors, I couldn't tell the difference. I agree with your thoughts about side step, certainly these days, as there are so many choices. Take care of yourself 👍
Hi Mark you may remember I like your⁷self was surprised with your results regarding the DE89 VS 3ONE6. I had been considering buying a 3one6 but was put off by the long thin handle. Having given a lot of consideration to this I decided to go with the 3D as my DE89 has the long handle it came in their starter kit. But as time has past I prefer a shorter handle. I personally think you have more control with the shorter handle and you get a better shave. Now that's something else for you to think about. Keep well and keep safe.
The DE 89 was my first razor.. sadly, it was dropped on a ceramic tile floor in my hotel room .. the threads were damaged...3ONE6 is my favorite razor... Well-made.. well worth the money never have to worry about damaged if dropped.. that's the big difference...
Oh no! The 'oh no' part of my reply was suggested by RUclips, and I wonder how it understands what you wrote well enough to suggest an answer that made sense. Amazing. What a shame that you dropped it onto tiles but it's a good point to make about the 3ONE6 being stronger. Perhaps the extra cost is worth it, in that respect.
@@FriendshipShaving Amazing how they could decipher your message and proffer the proper response, but can’t stop the porn/fake “you’re the winner” posts. Great shave!
Hi mark just got a de89 I have had the same razor for a while it is a boker who make top end knives . It is a Edwin jagger with out the branding. So being from Sheffield it stuck in my throat a bit to use a German copy of a razor made in my home town . Good vid pal 👍
Hi Mark. I'm glad you were able to put the right and get an original Sheffield razor for a Sheffield lad. I've heard of Boker, they also make straight razors; I'd like to see a few of those coming out of Sheffield again.
I got my DE89 back in 2011, but the chrome plating has finally started chipping away leaving behind a very brittle zinc alloy. I got a good 13 years out of it so no major complaints, I'd now like to get a solid stainless steel replacement that's a bit more aggressive/efficient - the search continues.
Hey, you did very well out of that razor, for the price. I do believe that the razor now has a brass head and guard. Good luck on your search.👍 The Rockwell 6S is very good, but the head is a little chunkier than the DE89.
I’ll rest content with my DE89 after this. One small point: my DE89 is noisy, in a good way. It stands out among my razors in that regard. So when you said the 3ONE6 was louder, it surprised me. But then it seemed to me that the DE89 was louder on the ATG pass. I heard that rasping sound loud and clear. I really love that sound, but only on this one. Cheers!
Nice comparison shave. However, as said before, for me personally the DE89 just so very slightly provides a better result. Just a tiny bit more in the efficiency sector, but then very likely different skin and hair growth types can alter the result. In your shave both razors performed kind of identical, so when being on a budget the DE89 would obviously be the one to go for. Have a great weekend.
Hi Tommy, it has been a good experiment to try this comparative shave. In this comments section, we've seen a variety of results from chaps that have both razors - I don't think there is much between them, whichever one is favoured. YMMV strikes again! 😀👍
Comparison shaves are always fun. To me, the head design on the 316 reminds me of the 34C. I've seen comparisons between the DE89 and 34C that resulted in almost identical shaves. I'm curious if you think the 316 and 34C give similar results. I like my 34C but I still get my best shaves with my Rockwell 6S.
@@FriendshipShaving For me, the cutting angle of the 34C seems unforgiving. I have to focus more to get a BBS shave. But I can see why new shavers might like it because it is hard to get nicked and I've never experienced any irritation. Maybe you should give it another try?
Hi Mark- Great comparison shave; thank you! I don’t have either of these razors, so hearing your thoughts on both has been very helpful in terms of a future purchase. I hope your weekend is restful and relaxing. Be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, my friend!
Hi mike, thank you for watching, even though you didn't have these razors; they both do shave very nicely indeed. A busy shaving weekend - I have just recorded a Gifts of Friendship video, for tomorrow and tomorrow I'll record a shave for Monday! Take care buddy. Enjoy your time away from work.
I have to say that the soap you chose for today sounded sublime, Mark. I know that a lot of gents don't like floral scented soaps, or at least purport not to, but a well executed floral soap is a wonderful thing. The shave was a bostin one, for sure, and interesting in the outcome. My DE89 is easily one of my favourites and I had wondered fr some time how it would compare to the more upmarket version. You and your mum be safe and have a great weekend.
I agree, at least to some extent, my friend. I tend not to like a heavy floral scent or something that is too strong, prefer a lighter scent. It seems a little subversive - men, smelling of flowers! 😁 All the best to your good wife and boys. Cheers
@@FriendshipShaving when you put it so eloquently, subversive gents smelling of flowers, I do question myself 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you very much indeed. Best wishes to your mum and your self.
I think there's a village in Yorkshire, where all the men wear floral scents and take compete in flower shows. Like the league of gentlemen. 😂 I might be getting a bit carried away here.
Hi Randall, thank you. It certainly surprised me but I find it interesting that some chaps here have different opinions. There surely isn't a lot in it.
Very interesting side-by-side comparison and a bit of surprise result for me. I've seen quite a few reviews of the 3one6 and consensus is it more aggressive than the DE89. I'm very happy with shaving my EJ DE89, so for me I see no requirement for picking up a 3one6, unless there is a really good price.👍😎👏
Very nice comparison. Ive been wet shaving for 3 years now. The de89 was on my list of the 3 or 4 i wanted to get to upgrade from the vander hagen which i purchased in the store. Ive always heard good things bout it. I like the sound of your soap to. I like a floral scent sometimes to my soap. One of my favorites is dapper doc by paa. Its a lilac and fig scented soap. Just beautiful. Again, great review you did. Thank you
Hi Andrew. I actually have some Dapper Doc, that was given to me by Sven. I just haven't got around to using it yet because I've been trying to use up all my little samples. I do take the lid off and smell it, from time to time. I wondered what the scent was. I must admit, I'm not sure about it, at the moment.
both great razors but the star of the show was that brush absolutely exquisite mate 👍 a tarts handbag 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that did make me chuckle. hope you have a great weekend my friend
Thank you, Paul. I'm pleased to make you chuckle, with my remark. This weekend has been great. I got a box in the post 😀 I hope you have had a good one. I hope you've had sun over your way, it's been dismal here for weeks.
Great side by side shave. A bit surprising. Like your initial thoughts, I thought 316 would be more efficient. Is it worth giving it another go with a top blade? Prob get same results. Have a good one! I think Kevy should try the same comparison shave if he hasn’t already.
Thank you - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that; I honestly would have put money on it! It was a very interesting and enjoyable shave. Surely Kevy has done a side by side shave. I must admit, I don't look as I never want someone else's thoughts and experience to colour my own.
The DE89 is a fine Razor. Very mild and lovely. Great for a beginner and someone with very sensitive skin. Even better than the Merkur 34. It's a little more aggressive. Just a little. To my skin.
I've seen a couple of very different looking Merkur 34c razors lately; basically the same head and different handles. They look very good. They are not up on the Merkur site when last I looked.
Nice comparison shave Mark! I am surprised, I figured the 3one6 would be a little more efficient 🤔 Thanks for your assessment 😎👍 Have a good weekend! Steve
Hi Steve, thank for watching mate. I knew it would surprise a few people, as it did me. It was enjoyable and I don't feel the need to own the 3ONE6 now. 😀
I've had a DE89 for near on 20 years now, ever since I was 15. It performs as well as when new, but does have a small dent in one corner of the head when I dropped it once (doesn't affect shave) and the underside of the bottom piece of the head shows some pitting/chrome lifting now in spots (doesn't affect shave) Considering the age and price, brilliant razer! Maybe the 316 would last longer, but really, what's the point if even after 20 years the DE89 looks very good with only minor blemishes in the hardest worn spots? Plus the chrome on the DE89 looks nicer. I'll definitely be replacing it with another DE89, maybe a gold plated one this time or just another chrome one and keep this one as a spare.
Hi Tom, thank you for writing. It's great to read that you have had your DE89 for twenty years! That is really great value for money. They are still a fantastic razor at a very good price; I love my DE89. It is one of the best razors I have. A gold one! Now, you've got me thinking! 😁 All the best, mate.
Thanks for making this video. I have a DE89 and have been thinking of buying the 3ONE6. I wonder if you notice that there is a lot of wiggle in the blade alignment on your DE89 - on mine I have to carefully line the blade up each time as there is a lot of play for the blade to be cockeyed to one side or the other. I understand that the 3ONE6 is injection molded rather than being machined - I wonder if it has tighter tolerances than the DE89?
Hi. The 3ONE6 was borrowed, so I can't directly compare the two razors anymore, but I didn't notice an obvious difference between them, at the time. My DE89 has a very slight bit of play on the blade, but not so much that I have to adjust it; If I just pop the blade in, without thinking about it, it works out just fine. It would be quite interesting to email Edwin Jagger and see what their reply is. I'd be interested to know.
Was there a difference in how quickly stubble came back? I find my more efficient razors keep me smoother longer even if the face feel right after shaving is similar to a more mild razor. TIA.
Good side by side comparison test of the razors. Soap sounds really nice. Have a safe week Mark
Thanks Roy. Take care mate.

On my skin the 3one6 in more aggressive than the de89.
